James Marsters at Grand Slam XVI

April 13th, 2008 Leave a comment Go to comments

James MarstersJames Marsters was at Creation Entertainment’s Grand Slam XVI Sci-Fi Summet this weekend, where he shared some details on Dragonball.

Unfortunately there isn’t a full report on his visit yet, but I’ve managed to find some random bits of Dragonball news he revealed during his Q&A.

I asked him if he liked Durango and he said the place was amazing and that he enjoyed the scenery and the way light was reflected on it. He also talked about some rock formations and how much [he got his] ass kicked while filming. He said later on that he did his own stunts so I think he was talking about it.

SOURCE

James talked about Dragonball. His First makeup job took 17 hours and was very painful, his suit was tight and so hard to breathe in. They couldn’t use a stunt man for a lot of the scenes because he didn’t look right. The stunt man didn’t look right because of the extensive make-up used on James, but not as good for the stuntman. Sounds like he had fun though, and is proud of himself.

He did many stunt scenes, James did all these jumping scenes off of 30 foot cliffs… and more.

SOURCE

He had to sit down for a few songs, because he says that Goku kicked his ass then Superman kicked his ass again, so he’s got some nerve problems in his hands, but not to worry, it’s nothing that a chiropractor can’t fix.

More news from fans at the convention:

-They wanted Piccolo to be more beautiful than he wanted to be. The character was in prison for 2000 years, so he should be old, ugly and decrepit. But they went for makeup that was safer and more young and beautiful, so he went to the makeup guy and said, hey, we can add back with paint what they removed from the sculpt because the producers aren’t here, and the director was fighting the same fight, so they made him older again.

-They have changed a few things in Dragonball, but the script reflects the heart of it. So much of Dragonball is about power and unrepentant violence. So much of it relies on post production. He’s in so much trouble – 20th century told him not to talk about it. Oh, but he’s not telling anything about the plot, he’s just saying his experiences as an actor, so they can’t sue him, right?

30 foot cliffs? Nice. If he was willing to do his own stunts and risk injury, that means that he has faith in the movie and want a good preformance, which means it must be good.

James has been jumping off 30 foot cliffs and doing his own stunts, seems like it’s getting pretty intense on the set of DragonBall :) Keep us updated man…

I heard the reasonwhy he had to do all the stunts? The director could not get the stuntman to have the same look as Piccolo to shoot effectively, so he had to do all his stunts

Haha, damn. Hearing how beat up he got on set, makes me want to see this all the more.

Btw, the reason why he did most stunts, was because he wanted the movie to be as perfect as possible. He and his son are huge fans of DB.

30 ft. cliffs? That means there will most likely be flying in this movie. Thats a good thing.

    April 13th, 2008 at 22:49 | #10

shit man…….. thats cool he did his own stunts, i don’t know if he did all of them of course but if he is at least attempting to do some of them then that is amazing.

jumping off cliffs that high, scary shiz man

  11. April 14th, 2008 at 00:17 | #11

Whoaaa it sounds like James is going in the foot steps of the stunt legend Jackie Chan.
They said “James did all these jumping scenes off of 30 foot cliffs and more”…. 30 feet is pretty high!! Maybe they will fly???? I don’t know?
    I hope they do! :)
The main question I really want to know is….. Will James play both King Piccolo and Piccolo Jr.???? I think he should, because I would love to see him in a Dragonball sequel if he plays the part well.

    i clapped at this

@Vegeta: You obviously haven’t heard of a show called ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer” created by Joss Wheden.

    April 14th, 2008 at 08:15 | #19

Haha, James seems to be taking control of his character as Piccolo a whole lot better than I thought! I hope they keep him as Piccolo if they really do decide to make sequels.

  20. April 14th, 2008 at 08:17 | #20

The producers at Fox want everything to be kid-friendly, but this shows that the director (and James Marsters) are trying to stay more faithful.

    @Adam:
Damn Fox, now I have a reason to hate them >:(
My bro was tellin me just yesterday, that this movie is goin to be so childish, no one will want to to watch it.
But i hope thats not the case. James Wong can definitely do somethin about this… right? I mean.. I just dun want another Funi-Dragonball (z) :(

  22. April 14th, 2008 at 08:38 | #22

@zanny: Well the man made “Final Destination” which is definitely not kid friendly.

  23. Ryan
    April 14th, 2008 at 10:42 | #23

wow his first make up job took 17 hours to do?…thats crazyyyy..what i really want to see is how they’re gona pull off a “super sayain” in the sequels:d

  24. zanny
    April 14th, 2008 at 10:44 | #24

    Haha, I guess u have a point there. :)

  25. Sean
    April 14th, 2008 at 10:47 | #25

@Adam: Hey no kidding, there was alot of violence and cursing in those films, and nudity :)
But let me get this straight, Fox wanted to make a guy who was over 2,000 years old look young…. but James went to James Wong and they both wanted him to be old like in the anime. Now that’s class, I’m just glad Marsters can tell us all this information about Piccolo, or can he?

  26. Ryan
    April 14th, 2008 at 11:33 | #26

haha i’m pretty sure there isen’t going to be any cursing in this movie even tho it wud make the movie reasonably realistic is there was…no nudity for sure..probably gona be a PG rated movie SADLY:(…hopefully there is at least blood or sumthin when they fight..

  27. jacksterson
    April 14th, 2008 at 11:37 | #27

Damn. Wtf is this shit about being childish?! NO WAY WILL I LET FOX DO THIS TO US!!!!

  28. Ryan
    April 14th, 2008 at 12:01 | #28

we all feel the same way jacksterson..lol we can’t do anything now:( filming is doneee..maybe the sequels into db(z) will be more satisfying..come on sayains must = rated R :)

  29. Sean
    April 14th, 2008 at 12:02 | #29

@jacksterson: What’s up with you dude? Did you get one of those granny porno pop-ups?

  30. Sean
    April 14th, 2008 at 12:08 | #30

I think they’ll shoot for a PG-13 rating, which I think sucks, but oh well.

  31. Ryan
    April 14th, 2008 at 12:13 | #31

which is ok for dragonball i guess..but for dbz they better turn it up a notch..haha especially with Vegeta

  32. DBiscool
    April 14th, 2008 at 12:24 | #32

None of the DB movies will ever be R rated. Never ever.

Maybe when they fight there will be some intense stuff and some blood on face and stuff but definitely not huge pile of red blood and bodies getting crushed etc.

Actually no studio would make an R rated dragonball movie.

  33. Sean
    April 14th, 2008 at 12:44 | #33

@DBiscool: How can you say that? Do you have an inside source working for Fox? Even so, they couldn’t really tell you anyway until the MPAA approves it.

  34. Ryan
    April 14th, 2008 at 13:48 | #34

i’m pretty sure it can be made as an 18A film for the sequels

I seriously love Marsters. . .i’ve loved him ever since he first appeared on Buffy as Spike haha. He seems like such a cool guy. . .

  36. zanny
    April 14th, 2008 at 14:25 | #36

Im pretty sure this will be a PG13 movie, but hey werent the star wars movies rated PG and look how good those turned out but I dun think they will make it into a rated R movie.. unless they have like ALOT of cursing, but i doubt it.

  37. Ryan
    April 14th, 2008 at 14:27 | #37

who do guys think would make a good vegeta and gohan in the next movies? vegeta is shorter than goku right?..so its gona be interesting to see who they choose for his character

  38. April 14th, 2008 at 14:33 | #38

@Ryan: There’s actually a discussion on that in the forum, if you want to go there. http://dbthemovie.com/forum/index.php?topic=32.0

  39. Sean
    April 14th, 2008 at 14:35 | #39

@Ryan: When you become like 20 you stop growing right? Look at Vegeta in the saiyan saga, he was about 25 and look how short he was, then look at him in the Buu saga, he was alot older and kept getting taller….almost as tall as Goku.

  40. Ryan
    April 14th, 2008 at 14:55 | #40

yea its weird how the dbz series worked out…n vegeta was about 25 when he first came to earth?..i don’t think so..i think he was much younger..and plus if they make a sequel its probably gona be about the sayain saga when vegeta first came to earth, thats what i meant when i said its gona be weird if they potray his height compared to goku’s from the anime, since vegeta was much shorter
n thanks 4 the link adam

    April 14th, 2008 at 15:01 | #41

oh nvm..just found our chatwin is like 5′11..he looked much shorter in those leaked pictures, i guess finiding someone for vegeta won’t be so hard

    Jet Li as Vegeta

  43. April 14th, 2008 at 15:25 | #43

    Dragonball should be PG13
Everyone 13 and over should be able to see it with out any problems. I think when Dragonball finally comes out to dvd they should show the uncut version. The uncut version should have some mild blood scenes and etc…. I don’t think they should make it rated R that’s not good. There are going to be alot of kids looking forward to see Dragonball.

    April 14th, 2008 at 15:49 | #44

I looooovvveeee James Marsters, haha! XD

And I have a tiny bit more faith in Wong now, seeing as how he wanted Piccolo to remain old and decrepit — more close to the source.

  45. Sean
    April 14th, 2008 at 16:21 | #45

@Ryan: Well…. how old was Goku in the saiyan saga? He had a kid that was 4 years old, so he was probably about 20-23 years old. And Vegeta was already about 7 when Goku was first born, so you think he was younger than 25? Definently not.

  46. jacksterson
    April 14th, 2008 at 16:36 | #46

Wow, just wow. I want to hug James for having such a deep passion for the material. Nerve damage? Jesus, james, it’s just dragonball… :P

  48. Moi
    April 14th, 2008 at 16:52 | #48

@ Sean — Yeah, Goku was 18 at the end of DB, when he got married. DBZ starts 5 years later, making him 23 when Gohan was 4. And if I’m remembering the official time-lines correctly . . . Vegeta was 5 when Goku was a baby and their home planet was destroyed. So Vegeta would be 28 at the beginning of DBZ, but age 29 by the time he fought Goku.

  49. Sean
    April 14th, 2008 at 16:56 | #49

@jacksterson: What Moi said lol :) Nice ;)

  50. April 14th, 2008 at 16:57 | #50

    Thanks for the info Moi
So James Wong is following in the right direction of Dragonball.
He just changed the story line a little bit so it won’t be predictable. Im glad he did, because I don’t want to know what’s going on.
