Jose Fernandez on Dragonball

Jose Fernadez and Hugh Jackman as WolverineDragonball Movie Blog recently had the opportunity to speak to the head of Ironhead studios, Jose Fernandez. Here’s what he had to say about his work on Dragonball:

DBMB: How did you get involved with Dragonball? Was there some sort of “auditioning” process or where you approached by Fox/James Wong?
JF: I was approached by Fox. I’ve done a handful of films for them, so we have a bit of a relationship.

DBMB: What characters did you work on in this film?
JF: In the early design phase I worked on almost, if not every character. After the initial drawings, the director and studio chose what they did and didn’t want to use. As far as final design and fabrication, I was responsible for Piccolo’s full costume and armor, everything except for his makeup, which ADI was responsible for. I also assisted Mayes Rubeo with realizing Goku’s costume and gei.

DBMB: What was it like working with the cast and crew?
JF: Other than James Marsters, I had little contact with the cast. I was only on set for a couple of days to make sure that the costumes were maintained, and looked the best they could on film.

DBMB: What was James Wong like as a director?
JF: I didn’t have the pleasure of working with James in depth. We met in a few preliminary meetings and e-mailed a few times. He seemed very focused and open to creative ideas.

DBMB: What was James Wong looking for in terms of character design?
JF: Well, James seemed to have a healthy respect for the source material. He wanted to create a memorable world that satisfied fans, but also was grounded in reality.

DBMB: How do you expect post-production to effect the look of certain characters? In what ways do you hope it will?
JF: I can only hope that the post-production work enhances the film. My favorite effects are the ones that seamlessly blend the practical and digital worlds. One world should enhance the other. Believability is always key.

DBMB: Were you familiar with the source material when you joined the project? If not, did you consult the original material for inspiration?
JF: I was not at the time, but there were those around me that were. That said, I immediately immersed myself in the world. Hopefully the fans are pleased.

DBMB: In terms of the styling of the characters you worked on for this film, what were some of the details that James Wong had requested you include?
JF: I specifically remember our conversations concerning Goku. James wanted to make sure that he wasn’t too tailored. He wanted Goku to feel like a timeless warrior. A combination of the new and old. Rather than come out of a superhero factory, Goku pieced together his costume from various sources that were important to him.

DBMB: What was the most challenging part of Dragonball?
JF: The biggest challenge for me specifically were budget and time constraints. I’m always pleasantly surprised with what can be done in a limited amount of time. I look forward to those challenges. They force you to be a problem solver.

DBMB: What directors would you like to work with that you haven’t worked with already?
JF: The new vanguard. Zack Snyder, Jon Favreau, Christopher Nolan…. I’m not sure in what capacity he could use me, but I’m a huge fan of Bryan Bird. For me, that guy can do no wrong.

DBMB: And of course I must ask, who is your favorite Dragonball character and why?
JF: I’m a fan of Yamcha. He reminds me of Han Solo. I’ve always been partial to the “loveable rogue” character. They have the most interesting arcs.

Oh 1 thing, you say the Buu saga was childish, yet Buu managed to do what no other villain could accomplish: Destroy earth.

Buu was way more evil and sadistic than Cell.

So if we are going to talk about evilness Buu owns Cell.

There are many more reasons, but im too tired right now.

    Yeah,
im sure turning people into candy is real evil and sadistic!!

I shall turn Adam into a cookie
    YUMMY!!!! Buu eat Adam

ya each saga was 6-8 hours and you say dbs a master piece cuz it has so much good content its is true i think it is a master piece but honestly 6-8 hours id say like…an hour of that shopuld be on film, the originals series would be better if it had less filler

  4. July 10th, 2008 at 17:01 | #4

no news no pics no trailer :(

LOL @ Corey. all I have to say

anyways, I also think it would be silly to have 3 movies JUST on the cell/androids. I too think that would be boring and people are not going to want to come back for 3 straight movies, die hard fans would but FOX is trying to appeal to everyone and not JUST the die hard fans. So from their stand point I think it would be dumb and would be wise not to go that route.

If it even makes it to a possible Cell saga, look for them to shrink it to fit one movie like they’re doing with Dragonball.

But we shouldn’t even be worrying about a possible Cell/Android movie. We don’t even know if this one will get enough popularity to encore a 2nd movie. We’ll have to see.

I’m prob one of the few that actually would’ve been fine with DBZ ending at the Freeza saga or even the Cell Saga. Buu Saga seemed like one big filler type thing to me. Even though I liked it.

Let’s just hope this one is good and if it is, we’ll get a sequel

Oh, also that epic moment in which Vegeta finally accepts Goku is better than him. Finally settling the rivalry between them both.

I suppose turning into liquid and getting into peoples bodies through their mouth and making them explode from the inside is kiddish?

    @Karen: Thanks Karen :)
    Your the best :D

I head someone say Piccolo = pickles. That’s incorrect. Only Saiyan names refer to vegetables. Piccolo is a musical instrument, as were his original henchmen.

I suppose Buu´s Human Genocide worldwide attack is also childish: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gf09vw_TsM8

I also suppose this is childrish too… what can be more sick and more evil than this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DaMbWVQw8G4&

What is more scary, one guy sitting in front of TV cameras saying he will destroy the world if nobody beats him or one ugly pink monster who instead of bluffering and threatening to do anything, he actually went to cities ATE the people and then exterminated the human race?.

I know Cell did kill some people in some towns, but this guy (Buu) took it to the next level. He didnt waste time making threats or showing off. No no no no no… he actually WENT the big cities, destroyed them and ATE the people in there.

So what if they were turned into candy or chocolate? Buu had a childish attitude but the evil thing about it is that it was PURE evil… what can be more evil than an evil demon with the attitude of a child? Just killing and eating people for fun?.

What is more scary, one guy saying in front of the TV that he will kill you, or a guy who doesnt waste his time making threats and actually goes to the point and goes ahead and destroy cities, eats millions of people and then mass kill the humans in one single attack? and if you are not satisfied enough, he then destroyed the planet, and then destroyed many more planets lol.

This guy couldnt be controlled. He was a killing machine. He was created for that, unfortunately he couldnt be controlled. Got out of control. The only ones who could face them were the Saiyan race who by that point evolved and became the strongest race in the universe (because by the time of the Frieza saga the Saiyans were the strongest at that point).

    Buu destroying planet earth: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3r_h7iLbZvg

And then the glorious final battle on the sacred planet of the Kais.. etc etc… I could go on but im tired.

Im sorry Adam but I had to point out why Buu was more evil than Cell in my opinion. I hope you dont get mad and delete my messages. I wont go off topic anymore. Just wanted to point out why Buu was in my opinion the ultimate evil.

Childish attitude, yet more sadistic and evil than any other.

    Ok back to the topic.

Ops I made a grammar mistake. I meant to say this:

“The only ones who could face HIM were the Saiyan race who by that point evolved and became the strongest race in the universe (because by the time of the Frieza saga, the Saiyans were NOT the strongest).”

I fixed that paragraph. Thats what I actually meant.

JoseMP lol, ha, ha Dude chill out!!
YOu just went to geek mode on me bro
I’ve seen the Majin buu saga and it was childish and the drawing was rushed. The majority of the fans will tell you that the Cell saga is way better then the buu saga!!

I know the majority of fans prefer Cell. But I was just pointing out some of the reasons why I liked Buu more than Cell. Im not saying I dont like Cell. Its just that I prefer Buu over Cell.

    But its fine.

k corey you didnt even ackowledge ANY of josemp points

hes right at some point buu was the most evil an scary, but the reason it shouldnt be made into film and the thing taht killed it was the charcters power, by that point, nothing really changed, sure there were super saiyan 3s and some fused guys but the it got impossible to follow the powers. Power levls made little sense and really, when goku went SS the first time, you FELT the power, but like wut, now your just supposed to think hes EVEN faster and now he can blow up bigger planets? who cares, the battles couldnt get more intense tho everyone was supposebly getting stronger

thats wut killed the buu saga, but i agree with many of josemp’s pomits

though i WOULD like to say that when cell was in his first forim sucking people up that was pretty intense

  18. July 11th, 2008 at 16:04 | #18

@heason: lol ha, ha, ha, ha Im sorry Heason  , but I can’t help but laugh at what you just said. We Db buddies and all, but come on dude you can’t be serious when you said Buu is scary???? lol, ha, ha

Buu coming to eat you Adam
    Buu like Adam!!

freeza was the scariest by far
cell was more interested in achieving his perfect form and testing his abilities than causing pain and suffering
buu was evil, but like somebody said, turning people into candy?? seriously??
buu had his moments but freeza is the ultimate evil in my opinion

hmm im hoping for good costumes. the gi didnt look too bad so far.
uhh yeah, fox seems skeptical about this one seems like– maybe why they havent made a teaser for public yet??! wasnt the first matrix the same way!? dont remember.
the art of the hollywood trilogy is going like this.. actI – introduce characters/beat main badguy that movie.. ACTII- new baddies, peeps die, cliffhanger esk ending into ACTIII- shits breakin loose, baddies lookin better, good guys comeback to win the day.
if they were to follow that format would be to have DB piccolo this movie.. ACTII Raditz battle, goku dying- afterlife ki part- dragonball wishback ACT III goku’s return and sayian struggle. or could cram it into the 2nd and do freeza ActIII cuz freeza commanded the last saiyans on places to go- they would modify it to tie in somehow with raditz or they just might follow the manga.
then again nothing has been confirmed, might just be “dragonball” stories only.. hah but kinda worried that fox is taking this too lightly, even with droppin 100mil into it. you gotta hype it unless u know its too cheesy. After batman this summer, the movies look bland comming up. start the hype now.

  22. July 14th, 2008 at 13:52 | #22

@AAA1058: No, Freeza was the worst.
