Jamie Chung Talks Chi-Chi

In a recent interview for her upcoming Samurai Girl TV show on ABC, Jamie Chung (Chi-Chi) talked about her role in Dragonball.

“It’s a very strong young female role, and her name is Chi Chi,” Chung said in in an interview at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour, where she was promoting her new ABC Family show Samurai Girl, in Beverly Hills, Calif., last week.

Dragonball–which also stars Emmy Rossum, James Marsters, Chow Yun-Fat and Ernie Hudson–follows a boy named Goku (Justin Chatwin) who tries to fulfill his grandfather’s dying request to find a great master and gather seven Dragon Balls to prevent an alien’s rise to power. The movie is based on the anime series Dragon Ball Z.

“We’ve finished filming,” Chung said. “The martial-arts aspect of the character [is the same as the Samurai Girl character Heaven], but Heaven is something real special. … Chi Chi was a fun character to play, and … it’s also a very strong young female, but Heaven has a completely different [backstory] behind her that makes things so much more interesting.”

    they kicked out the creator of the anime because he was complaining that they made the movie wrong, which they did, and they’re ruining characters and stories. even at 18, goku was buff, not a twig like this guy. mai is not some super assassin as they portray her here, they took out bulma’s green hair ’cause they don’t want anyone wearing wigs so i guess fox believes people can’t dye their hair. also, they filmed the movie in about 3 months… some thing’s not right here.

    movie will fail

    green hair huh?

    July 21st, 2008 at 11:55 | #14

    @thismoviewontmakeit:

    First off the movie was filmed in like 4 or 5 months.

    Second, Bulma´s hair is not GREEN, its BLUE. So you dont know what the hell are you talking about.

    Third, nobody kicked the creator out, thats just a damn unfounded rumor.

    Fourth, Goku WAS NOT buffed when he was a Teen. Have you even seen DragonBall? or Even the first episodes of DBZ?. Even against Raditz (beginning of DBZ) Goku WAS NOT buffed. He became strong when he was trainning to fight Nappa and Vegeta. Not before.

    Please next time read and research before making a fool of yourself. Thank you.

    She seems to be dissing ChiChi a bit.
    But i feel as though its only because shes talking about her other role
    If she was being interviewed about ChiChi, shed diss the other character

    Anyway
    what happened to your awsome new banner man?
    Its not applied to the thing anytmore :s

    that pic is the first time emmy hasn’t looked lifeless. She seems actually ALIVE in it when in most pictures i’ve seen around she mostly looks like an emotionless robot. I hope this is a reflection of her choices in acting the part of bulma. As for Jamie Chung’s comments. She does sound like she’s downplaying her chi chi role. I would have liked it if she’d chosen her words more wisely. *shrug* oh well…

  21. July 21st, 2008 at 15:20 | #21

    @Bucky-O-Hare:

    I’m hearing you guys talk about a pic of Emmy, which picture are you guys talking about

    and would you guys stop it with the whole Jamie talking down about chi-chi, seriously just because she likes one role better then another doesn’t mean she is being negative about her role as chi-chi, think about it, her role as chi-chi is minor, her role as heaven is major, which role do you think she is going to be able to get more in depth with.

    July 21st, 2008 at 17:12 | #22

    peeps.. chung totally downplayed her chi chi role. thus hinting she didnt like it or disliked the movie or thinks its going to suck or all combined.
    Never cool to do that, considering its a 100+million dollar movie shes in. a lot of actors would give their left nut to be in Fox hollywood 100+million budget film role. secondary character or not.

    she should of said something like, “im completely stoked about both roles, with each having their differences yet, I find them great accomplishments in my career and will be delights for every one to watch.” that would of been more diplomatic and not create a sense of one role as “better” then the other

    I can’t believe how much some people are over-analyzing what she said. Any actor would be more positive about getting a lead role over a supporting one. Her interview wasn’t centered around her role as ChiChi and quite frankly she doesn’t have much else to compare to as a young actress just starting out so of course she’s going to use that as a likely comparison. Face it, ChiChi doesn’t have as interesting a back story as Goku or Piccolo. Fans aren’t going to see the film for her role alone, while her role as Heaven is more important to her career.

    It’s amazing the assumptions many have already made off of this movie from promotional pictures and small interviews alone. I’m wondering if these people are seeing/reading the same articles I am sometimes.

  24. July 21st, 2008 at 22:14 | #24

    Thats amazing Twilight, you said exactly what I was going to say, word for word… people need to calm down, stop nitpicking at every little thing.

    :evil: this movies gonna suck. i can see it now. i hope it kills whoevers is involved in its career. first its almost an all asian cast except for goku whos a white guy. then they got the the real world girl playin chi chi who i didnt even know is an actor plus noone really looks like the characters. plus you know there gonna change the story line around to the point were its no longer gonna be the dragon ball we all know and love. i bet there gonna try to make it see true to life when one of the things that i enjoyed about the cartoons is that it is fiction and leaves openings to any possibility in the dragon ball universe

    this movie does not seem like it will turn out for well for the series. why r they making characters that dont exist in the series and why is goku going to school? o and btw why is the guy playing goku white? seriously and he looks nothing like goku. geez who ever this girl playing chi chi doesnt know anything about dbz because she says he has blue eyes like in the cartoon. what?!!! when does goku ever have blues eyes. he only has brow and green when he becomes ssj. whoever is in charge of making this i really hope they get sued by Akira Toriyama for defamation of character or something for ruining a very good series. :(

    I wish MTV would actual release Real World San Diego, then rest of the world can see clip of Jamie Chung crying about how she can’t help it that her eyes are slanted, her hair color is black and her skin is yellow. In her own words that she has been struggling her own life because of her ethnicity, and her response is to despise herself and everything her ethnicity represents. Put this sell-out on TV is promoting another self loathing William Hung.
