Justin Chatwin (Goku)Our source in Japan has translated the October issue of Roadshow magazine. In this issue there are new interviews with the cast and crew, and today we’ll be posting the interviews with Justin Chatwin (Goku) and 87Eleven (stunts).

Justin Chatwin interview
First of all, it’s an honor to play Goku, because he is a very important and epic character. He is always seeing the positive side of things, does good things, and always trys to help and take care of the weak, not only pursuing his power. He is a dependable and loving man as well as a boy. So I like Goku.

In preparation for the role, of course I read the original manga (all of it), in addition, I read Monkey King a little, because Dragonball is based on Monkey King. And during the break time of shooting, I got into Goku’s character, telling jokes with other cast in search of the real communication which can be used in acting.

This is the most interesting movie for me. Because I have never fought with anyone though, I trained martial arts and acrobat, and then we shot it. That’s fun as well as challenging. Fighting with Eriko (Tamura), she punched me in the face, actually she intended to hit lightly, but…it was a clean hit (laugh) She said “I’m sorry!” and apologized to me, but thanks to her, we could shoot very powerful action scene. Through this work, I think I could learn a lot of things.

I like Durango very much. Because a lot of my favorite movie like “The Wild Bunch” was shot here. And there are locations like sand dunes, cave, lava field and rocky hill like the Grand Canion, so I think the background of this movie are very epic.

Highlights of this movie are the action scenes, and amazing visual effects will be made at post production, so I’m looking forward to see it. About Kamehameha I only can imagine it now. I’m so excited. And this movie is the coming-of-age story about a boy, though this is set in a sci-fi world, in my opinion, my best scene is the moment when the characters who got together for the same purpose relate to each other.

Action coordinator 87eleven staff interview
Each characters has a different fighting style. For example, Goku’s fighting style is a hybrid of capoeira, karate and so on. Chi-Chi’s fighting style is based on kick boxing (Muay Thai) style, Master Roshi and Gohan are based on traditional Chinese martial arts (southern style). Justin has good muscle strength of the lower body so to harness this strength, we let him do action. His capoeira motion is very good. He has no experience of martial arts at all, we had to teach him from scratch. But he is doing very well for two months training period.

Highlight of this movie is fighting with Goku and Piccolo, I think it has a tremendous impact. Goku and Gohan’s fight is comical, and Chi-Chi does Jackie Chan-like battle. Each character has a unique twist on martial arts.

    Wait a tic!!! :) :)

    Does this mean Karin is going to be in the movie????

    They said the guy that did the voice for Karin is doing the Narration in the trailer…. WOW!!!!

  7. August 22nd, 2008 at 11:06 | #7

    @http://www.myspace.com/coreywilson10: I dont think they will have him sadly because they dropped all talk animals. :(

  8. August 22nd, 2008 at 11:15 | #8

    This is great, Chatwin really got into his role ^_^

    I couldn’t help but be happy when he described Goku’s character so well and the Heath Ledger-like preparations he took. I didn’t expect him to read both Dragon Ball AND The Monkey King. My faith in this movie has began to rise up even further.

    I am very excited to see the trailer now.

    My only concern is that this will be more traditional martial arts and not Dragonball martial arts where they can jump 200 feet in the air and punch as they free fall. But hey, they are going for a more down to Earth gritty-graphic image, so I guess I can understand why it might be more traditional.

    So the fights won’t be supernatural, but more of your everyday Crouching Tiger-like movie?

    Man, Chatwin really got into the role. The way he described Goku, it’s like the character will be a lot closer to the manga/anime than people think.

    Man i’m very exited!!! Master Roshi in movie played by Yuu-Fat-Show( i don’t remember his name haha :D ) learn Chinese Marcial Arts, Chi-Chi Muay Thai, and Justin learn Muay-Thai, Capoeira and is very strong now…because he was training in GYM.

    I have a feeling they gave Justin the capoeira fighting style because that’s what Jackson Spidell is good at. Check out some of his videos on YouTube and you’ll see what I mean.

    August 22nd, 2008 at 11:45 | #16

    By the way, whats wrong with Chatwins shirt? Lol. How many different outfits does Goku wear in this movie?? Or do you think its his undershirt for the blue and orange gi?

    And maybe its “battle damaged”

  17. SSJ Jon
    August 22nd, 2008 at 11:48 | #17

    @Tommy: well ofcourse its battle damage, piccolo probaly shot a beam at him. thats his shirt thats underneath his gi. you can tell from the tight sleeves

    August 22nd, 2008 at 11:50 | #18

    @J:
    Personally, I’m expecting a combination of both things. Have you seem Stephen Chow’s “Kung-fu hustle”? There is a progression in the fighting of that movie from physical kung-fu “Crouching Tiger…” style to a more supernatural epic thing DBZ style. I supose they’ll do the same thing here, and if Wong can capture some of that KFH magic, DB will sure be a fun ride.

    finally some good news, this whole time it looked they were gonna make goku this emo kid that no one likes at his school, but now that it says justin read the manga and knows what goku’s really like, im a lot more confident with the movie.

    Wow, read ALL of the manga? AND some of the monkey King story? He’ll nail it. No doubt now. I know because it’s important to research not only goku himself but the larger origin of his character in the monkey king. It seems like not only his personality but his fighting style will resemble the monkey king’s aswell. GREAT NEWS. Took a while though…

  29. August 22nd, 2008 at 12:44 | #29

    see? this movie is going to be good…plus.. they said that their moves are BASED on fighting styles, so im sure they will put the high jumping and fast fighting stuff in…or it wont be dragonball. i’m sure james wong and the stunt crew saw the anime, and saw how they fought.

    i cant wait to see goku and grandpa gohan’s fight tho.

    I AM….REPAIR MAN MAN MAN MAN MAN MAN MAN MAN…….

  30. August 22nd, 2008 at 12:46 | #30

    @robert g: dude, akira toriyama went as far as showing mens asses in dragonball…..u think a fart joke would make him ashamed?

    With a budget like this, and the fantasy direciton they’re taking it, it wouldn’t be difficult at all to make a full CG cat like Korin. Remember Harry Potter? And LOTR? If they can do it there, they can do it here. I guess it’s just a matter of the intended effort. Sadly sounds all rushed.

  32. SSJ Jon
    August 22nd, 2008 at 13:00 | #32

    @REPAIR MAN MAN: lol he always make grab people crotchs including a couple men, and goku also use to lay his head on Gohans family jewels so yea, a fart joke is the least of his worries lol

  33. August 22nd, 2008 at 13:09 | #33

    @robert g:

    I compared the preparations Chatwin took to Heath Ledger, they both read the comics and would try and get in character off screen. I should be shot for comparing something that’s true? We’ll you’ll get your wish, I’m going to be playing some airsoft with friends this weekend.

    The only difference between Chatwin and Ledger is Chatwin read the entire series and The Monkey Kong, Heath Ledger only read TWO graphic novels. Heather Ledger got into character a little more, spending two weeks alone, but Chatwin took the time to learn more about his character.

    this makes me wanna Kamehamaha in my pants! All i care about is the action/fight scenes with special effects and the scenery. We all know the story lie has been butchered I’m just looking foreword to an entertaining film based on my favorite child hood Anime.

  37. August 22nd, 2008 at 13:38 | #37

    @ROb:

    It is always funny when actors accidentally hit each other hard, I remember bloopers from a Jacki Chan movie, forgot the name, the one where he becomes immortal, the girl slaps him hard several times :lol:

    and it is good to know that Japan got the trailer, we should get it anytime now. :D

  38. August 22nd, 2008 at 13:39 | #38

    @Lord Jaric:

    sorry rob, have no idea I hit the reply button

  39. Sal
    August 22nd, 2008 at 13:40 | #39

    Well if they aren’t gunna have any talking animals then they should just have Yajirobe out and about and him like owning them or something….like in Legend of Zelda how the one fat guy would sell you the magic seeds to grow the flying plants…lol like a roaming merchant or somethin..

    But if they are talking about his narration…then there could be a chance that Kami will make an appearance…and if that then theres a chance Goku will enter the Hyperbolic Time Chamber for a portion of the film…

    August 22nd, 2008 at 13:43 | #40

    Joker has been played by other actors and in comics and tv shows ect. Heath made TDK joker his own by taking elements from his sources and just coming up with something so different his mannerisms ect. Lets just hope Piccolo/goku have done the same because when you take the orignal source and copy it to real life things just don’t flow right you have to make it believable and not cheesey as shit. Some things work and somethings don’t
