Emmy Rossum Talks Dragonball

September 19th, 2008 Leave a comment Go to comments

Emmy Rossum (Bulma) spoke with MTV News in great length about her character in Dragonball, her opinion of the show, and much more (including a spoiler or two).

With shooting completed for the live-action adaptation of popular anime/manga series “Dragonball,” actress Emmy Rossum told MTV News that she’s finally washed the blue coloring out of her hair and returned to a life sans catsuit and cartoon weaponry — but with a few new skills in her repertoire.

“In it, [I'm] riding a motorcyle in a leather catsuit, so that’s always fun — and I have five guns that spin all around,” said Rossum of her role as Bulma, the sometimes-partner to the film’s hero, Goku (played by Justin Chatwin). “I had never ridden a motorcycle before. I think I was more concerned about the safety of the people in the crew because sometimes I would lose control and veer randomly off into people.”

As for her character’s fondness for gunplay, Rossum said she’d never fired — or even held — a gun before “Dragonball,” but feels more than confident about pulling off her character’s trigger-happy habits thanks to some training with local Marines.

That calm-under-fire training will probably come in handy for the “Phantom of the Opera” actress, considering the level of scrutiny an adaptation of one of the anime and manga worlds’ most popular properties brings with it. According to Rossum, fans should be pleasantly surprised with the way the property has been translated to a live-action project.

“When I signed on to the project, I was a big fan of the anime and knew [Bulma] as the iconic blue, bobbed character and wanted to stay true to that — but we also wanted to make it realistic,” explained Rossum. “So in keeping with the director and what the studio really wanted, we adapted her look to be a little more realistic and human, and little bit more believable for contemporary day. She’s pretty bad-ass, but still quirky and fun, and kind of ridiculous in the way she is in the anime.”

That doesn’t mean the legions of “Dragonball” faithful aren’t far from her mind, though. Rossum said her first encounter with “Dragonball” was the Saturday morning cartoon, only to realize that “it’s really so much more than that — from the comic to [the cartoon] to the whole franchise and brand, so many people feel such a closeness to these characters.”

“So, it’s a little bit stressful to play a character that so many people hold close to their hearts,” she admitted, “but you just hope you do it justice and they like it.”

Rossum also hinted at a few aspects of the film that should have fans guessing, telling MTV News that she’s “seen some wax molds” for potential action figures, and cautiously acknowledged that a video game based on the film was “a possibility.”

Possibly the most interesting tease she offered up was her anticipation of not only seeing “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” alum James Marsters appear on screen in his role as Lord Piccolo, but also “an incredible monster that I can’t talk about that is very, very tall.”

“It’s actually a very tall man — an 8-foot man,” she added. “It’s based on something else from the… You know, I can’t really say anything else.”

Motorcycle incidents and catsuits aside, Rossum said she’d be up for a return to the role in a “Dragonball” sequel, and vehemently denied rumors that the project was in danger of being cancelled or otherwise shut down.

“Oh, no. I really doubt that’s possible,” said Rossum. “That’s not going to happen.”

I doubt she was a “big fan” before getting the script, but i admire her optimism. And the “incredible monster” is either the Oozaru or giant Piccollo. But more likely the Oozaru.

Bulma is not bad-ass. Bulma is very intelligent and sometimes interested in boys.

WTF!!! Piccolo is not green, Goku is blue-eyed highscholl student, and Bulma is BADASS!? Bulma would hide leaving Goku to fight on his own whenever some danger was near!

“Contemporary audiences”? Dragon Ball is a SUCCESS TODAY! Check the new videogame out for PS3 and X360. Why would they bother doing it if it weren’t a sure success?

This is getting worse and worse. Every news the certainty that NOTHING, absolutely NOTHING, will like Dragon Ball increases.

I bet they made Bulma like Trinity in Matrix. It has become fashionable to portray women as being just as baddass as men themselves, I believe that’s what she means by “contemporary audiences”.

“When I signed on to the project, I was a big fan of the anime . . . ”

Erm, in a past interview with one of the Japanese mags. (if I’m remembering correctly — or it might’ve been something she posted on MySpace?), she said she’d never heard of the series prior to getting the role, and that she didn’t check it out afterwards, ’cause she felt the script was sufficient enough to go off of. Soooo . . . yeah. I don’t really care either way, but this is interesting. XD

I am not saying Bulma is a coward, but certainly she is not “badass”. By badass I think of Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, etc.

I just hope, the “big man” was playing oozaru. It would give us high hopes for the future DB/Z movies if the Sayiajin legacy of Goku took a great part in the story.

I am totally gonna get the action figures and the video game. I think the 8 foot tall man could be the Oozaru (or possibly the giant Piccolo). I haven’t watched Dragon Ball in a while, is there any other “tall” people/things besides giant Piccolo or Oozaru?

I look foward to seeing Emmy Rossum on the big screen as the iconic “blue, bobbed character” we all know and love. I wonder how they’re gonna pull of this 8 ft. tall man/oozaru. hmmm. She also revealed some extra upcoming merchandise, that’s always nice. Cool.

I believe every major system since the 80s have had Dragon Ball videogames. There was one Dragon Ball Z title release earlier this year, and another about the first series now for DS.

@Hinkle: “And she didnt mean badass by ass kickin martial artest but as in cool and a good role model for girls which bulma was orignal suposed to be ”

Ok, news for you. Not the entire world share the American jargon for a segregated society. Only in the US a “role model” must be of the same gender, ethnicity, age, etc.

Second, not the entire world has an obsession about quotas, affirmative action and compensation policies that make necessary to put people in certain places for gender or ethnic reasons.

Now, how can you say that Bulma was created solely for the purpose of serving as “role model”? I have no idea what the author had in mind, but Bulma is one of the main characters of DB! She is not there by chance!

She is not badass, she is smart, very smart. She doesn’t do the fighting, and even in DB Goku was the one doing the fighting. She would hide away and wait for Goku to get rid of whatever danger.

Besides, Bulma was feminine, which excludes the possibility of her being some kickass-badass-macho-woman such as Trinity from the Matrix.

    September 19th, 2008 at 19:12 | #45

@Rammstein: Basically, the ’studio’ meaning those morons who also ruined Fantastic 4 took the one scene where she shoots Goku and turned it into her entire character. Now it seems she’ll shoot anything on site. That’s not Bulma.

    September 19th, 2008 at 19:15 | #46

Oh man nooo! Never mind what I said about the Fullum Assassins. The ‘Oozaru’ really does seem to be a big, modified 8ft tall Chatwin! If you don’t believe me look here!

  46. VEGETApsycho
    September 19th, 2008 at 19:27 | #47

yep, a modified version of Oozaru + Android 8 = JC Oozaru :O i dunno

but this seems like a definate to me:

Gohan + Goku = Justin Goku
Videl + Chi chi = Jamie ChiChi
Bulma + Launch = Emmy Rossum Bulma
    ……. + Piccolo = James Marsters Piccolo????
Red Ribbon Army Baddies = Mai?? (note shapeshifter skills – Shou, ninja skills – the ninja dude in DB, and Mai herself….???)

The directors can’t seem to fit so many characters into the movie, thus COMBINED them with the known characters in this movie to help fit and represent them in the movie, BUT in the process, modyfying the original characters that much that flamers come from all over just to flame bout unfaithfulness and what not.

  47. September 19th, 2008 at 19:31 | #48

@Karen: How about a first date with me

And about this movie well hmmm… Well I dont really give a damn about the pictures, cast, directors or trailer what I care is the movie. I will see the movie first then judge it, if it turns out great well goodif it turns out awful well who cares I just want to seethe movie. I dont understand why some of you fags get to excited and to hype about this movie and havent seen the movie yet. And some other fags always whining and bitching this movie and saying it will suck and the movie hasnt come out yet. And dont know why you people always fighting each other.Me I dont really care even if I see the trailer all I wanna see is the movie and then judge it.
