Emmy Rossum Talks Dragonball

September 19th, 2008 Leave a comment Go to comments

Emmy Rossum (Bulma) spoke with MTV News in great length about her character in Dragonball, her opinion of the show, and much more (including a spoiler or two).

With shooting completed for the live-action adaptation of popular anime/manga series “Dragonball,” actress Emmy Rossum told MTV News that she’s finally washed the blue coloring out of her hair and returned to a life sans catsuit and cartoon weaponry — but with a few new skills in her repertoire.

“In it, [I'm] riding a motorcyle in a leather catsuit, so that’s always fun — and I have five guns that spin all around,” said Rossum of her role as Bulma, the sometimes-partner to the film’s hero, Goku (played by Justin Chatwin). “I had never ridden a motorcycle before. I think I was more concerned about the safety of the people in the crew because sometimes I would lose control and veer randomly off into people.”

As for her character’s fondness for gunplay, Rossum said she’d never fired — or even held — a gun before “Dragonball,” but feels more than confident about pulling off her character’s trigger-happy habits thanks to some training with local Marines.

That calm-under-fire training will probably come in handy for the “Phantom of the Opera” actress, considering the level of scrutiny an adaptation of one of the anime and manga worlds’ most popular properties brings with it. According to Rossum, fans should be pleasantly surprised with the way the property has been translated to a live-action project.

“When I signed on to the project, I was a big fan of the anime and knew [Bulma] as the iconic blue, bobbed character and wanted to stay true to that — but we also wanted to make it realistic,” explained Rossum. “So in keeping with the director and what the studio really wanted, we adapted her look to be a little more realistic and human, and little bit more believable for contemporary day. She’s pretty bad-ass, but still quirky and fun, and kind of ridiculous in the way she is in the anime.”

That doesn’t mean the legions of “Dragonball” faithful aren’t far from her mind, though. Rossum said her first encounter with “Dragonball” was the Saturday morning cartoon, only to realize that “it’s really so much more than that — from the comic to [the cartoon] to the whole franchise and brand, so many people feel such a closeness to these characters.”

“So, it’s a little bit stressful to play a character that so many people hold close to their hearts,” she admitted, “but you just hope you do it justice and they like it.”

Rossum also hinted at a few aspects of the film that should have fans guessing, telling MTV News that she’s “seen some wax molds” for potential action figures, and cautiously acknowledged that a video game based on the film was “a possibility.”

Possibly the most interesting tease she offered up was her anticipation of not only seeing “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” alum James Marsters appear on screen in his role as Lord Piccolo, but also “an incredible monster that I can’t talk about that is very, very tall.”

“It’s actually a very tall man — an 8-foot man,” she added. “It’s based on something else from the… You know, I can’t really say anything else.”

Motorcycle incidents and catsuits aside, Rossum said she’d be up for a return to the role in a “Dragonball” sequel, and vehemently denied rumors that the project was in danger of being cancelled or otherwise shut down.

“Oh, no. I really doubt that’s possible,” said Rossum. “That’s not going to happen.”

Maybe she’s just talking about the fullum assasin Piccolo creates.

Dj Check my response on dbmb.net we have the same argument. 8ft tall monster then she adds they used an 8 ft tall man. PPl are just getting caught up with the entire 8 ft tall man thing….and missing the important part which is that Amy Rossum Baiscally confirmed to all Dragonball fans that Ooozaru is in the movie….it makes me alot more excited about the movie…please stop saying its raditz….18…8….lol or even broly

In this picture the costume ends at the elbows.

    http://dbthemovie.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=2&pos=7

But above they could have added some fur to make it look like half a monster ape and half human Goku.

They maybe replace the Oozaru we know with a kind of an archetype form of a transformed Saiyajin that could look a little like a SSJ4.

Oozaru are taller than 8ft and would require sufficient CGI to look right (even though no other aspect of this movie looks right so far) so my guess is none other than chi-chi’s father, Ox-King.

@Freeccolo: Never thought of that, that’s a really good idea

@stonedfish55: Jamie Chung already said Ox King wasn’t in the movie. Her knowledge of the Ox King actually convinced me that she HAD seen the show before, though, haha.

My guess is giant Piccolo (like from the manga), or a version of Oozaru that is scaled down and cheaper to create on film. XP

Perhaps the latter, considering that earlier reports of the school scenes said that while they’re showing slides of an eclipse or whatever, Goku starts to go into what I call the “pre-Oozaru trance.” XD And also because . . . well, this is Fox. They certainly would try to crunch on the budget (King Kong was over 200 mil, peeps) by doing something sort of half-assed like that to still “please the fans,” rather than ignore it completely.

Ur not very bright if your seriously think its Ox king….its like worse than broly….why in an interview would she say im so excited to see JM as piccilo…and also an incredible!!! monster she cant talk about..but its from the manga…yeah that monster is really android 18 or broly or even OX king!!! sorry they couldnt find the 20 ft tall actor/stunt double to play Ooozaru. you know how when the actors have been questioned in interviews in the last couple of months? They all are asked will this movie be good? They all have said so much relies on how much money they put into the special effects. Soo this might be one of those things they are referencing.

@Freeccolo: “They maybe replace the Oozaru we know with a kind of an archetype form of a transformed Saiyajin that could look a little like a SSJ4.”

Why not? They have changed everything. This would a minor change if compared to what they did to Piccolo.

@Novashinron: “Did you forget that Bulma shot goku when she first met…”

And how does it make her “bad-ass”. Videl is bad-ass, not Bulma. Bulma is adventurous and intelligen, but the real dangers were faced by Goku.

@Destored: “Video game, JUST WHAT I WANTED!
    Action Figures!

This movie is going to be big.”

 Videogame tie-ins usually suck. Most Dragon Ball games suck ass too. Now image a movie tie-in game based on a suck-ass adaptation. That’s suckness all over the place.

@box in a bag: I also said A LOT of people, including you are in denial about the Oozaru turning out to just be an extremely lame 8-ft alien-monster Chatwin…kind of like the Europe and the U.S. were when Hitler was flagrantly taking over Europe, country by country.

  21. J
    September 20th, 2008 at 18:02 | #21

@Bucky-O-Hare: No she is not. First of all, look at the photo of the 8-ft tall man wearing the monster arms with the Chatwin arm bands, then look at the Fullum assassins, whose arms are completely different. Go on, look in the photo gallery Adam made.

  25. dj
    September 20th, 2008 at 18:14 | #25

@atxhorns: the fanfiction isn’t complete but during the tournament in some forest raditz ship crashes near some hunters camp. the hunter like the farmer in the anime shoots raditz and like the anime, raditz catches the bullet and flicks it back at him, killing him. the reason i’d like the scene to start off like that is that it introduces krillin and establishes a growing bond between him and goku

  26. atxhorns
    September 20th, 2008 at 18:27 | #26

right on man but i still hope hes at roshis’ when goku goes there to train. I understand he wont be but im still crossing my fingers. its what they should have done how hard is it to hvae him go train and meet krillin there form a bond while training. You dont even have to give him extra screen time just have him be one of roshis’ students and have him train along with goku…. its how it really should be….but no weavers goku’s boy

Since they are going to change the entire story, they should make Goku to have been sexually abused while child. And, like, Roshi is a sexual predator.

That would fit perfectly with Fagwin. I mean, he looks kind of emo-my-life-sucks-I-ve-been-raped. Imagine the drama and shit. That would be like more modern and stuff.

lmao yeah good point but i thought she was just talking about the outfit we have seen her in already cuzz she is wearing leather pants but if she wears an actual cat suite well then it has the potential to save the movie even if it sucks balls

    Who could it be????

    Piccolo???? :)
    Fulum assassin???? :-)
or Oozaru — I really hope not!!!! If it’s Oozaru im going to be so pissed.
