Emmy Rossum Talks Dragonball
Emmy Rossum (Bulma) spoke with MTV News in great length about her character in Dragonball, her opinion of the show, and much more (including a spoiler or two).
With shooting completed for the live-action adaptation of popular anime/manga series “Dragonball,†actress Emmy Rossum told MTV News that she’s finally washed the blue coloring out of her hair and returned to a life sans catsuit and cartoon weaponry — but with a few new skills in her repertoire.
“In it, [I'm] riding a motorcyle in a leather catsuit, so that’s always fun — and I have five guns that spin all around,†said Rossum of her role as Bulma, the sometimes-partner to the film’s hero, Goku (played by Justin Chatwin). “I had never ridden a motorcycle before. I think I was more concerned about the safety of the people in the crew because sometimes I would lose control and veer randomly off into people.â€
As for her character’s fondness for gunplay, Rossum said she’d never fired — or even held — a gun before “Dragonball,†but feels more than confident about pulling off her character’s trigger-happy habits thanks to some training with local Marines.
That calm-under-fire training will probably come in handy for the “Phantom of the Opera†actress, considering the level of scrutiny an adaptation of one of the anime and manga worlds’ most popular properties brings with it. According to Rossum, fans should be pleasantly surprised with the way the property has been translated to a live-action project.
“When I signed on to the project, I was a big fan of the anime and knew [Bulma] as the iconic blue, bobbed character and wanted to stay true to that — but we also wanted to make it realistic,†explained Rossum. “So in keeping with the director and what the studio really wanted, we adapted her look to be a little more realistic and human, and little bit more believable for contemporary day. She’s pretty bad-ass, but still quirky and fun, and kind of ridiculous in the way she is in the anime.â€
That doesn’t mean the legions of “Dragonball†faithful aren’t far from her mind, though. Rossum said her first encounter with “Dragonball†was the Saturday morning cartoon, only to realize that “it’s really so much more than that — from the comic to [the cartoon] to the whole franchise and brand, so many people feel such a closeness to these characters.â€
“So, it’s a little bit stressful to play a character that so many people hold close to their hearts,†she admitted, “but you just hope you do it justice and they like it.â€
Rossum also hinted at a few aspects of the film that should have fans guessing, telling MTV News that she’s “seen some wax molds†for potential action figures, and cautiously acknowledged that a video game based on the film was “a possibility.â€
Possibly the most interesting tease she offered up was her anticipation of not only seeing “Buffy the Vampire Slayer†alum James Marsters appear on screen in his role as Lord Piccolo, but also “an incredible monster that I can’t talk about that is very, very tall.â€
“It’s actually a very tall man — an 8-foot man,†she added. “It’s based on something else from the… You know, I can’t really say anything else.â€
Motorcycle incidents and catsuits aside, Rossum said she’d be up for a return to the role in a “Dragonball†sequel, and vehemently denied rumors that the project was in danger of being cancelled or otherwise shut down.
“Oh, no. I really doubt that’s possible,†said Rossum. “That’s not going to happen.â€

C.W. you ned not be pissed. I believe they were going through a pre shooting meeting with the actors in that picture with emmy and the blue screen and the supposed 8ft chatwin stand in. If you look at his arm above the wrist bands there is this weird thing where it looks like more make up is about to applied i think he is supposed to look alot taller than 8ft when its seen in the movie and he wont look like he does in that pic. Plus his wristbands are huge on him bigger than they lookedon chatwin…as if they were expanded greatly. i myslef think its Oozaru

I really hope if oozaru is shown in the movie is that 8 feet tall monsters they are talking about. And they do some sort of combination like Freecolo said.

I hope the oozaru is portrayed that way. It would be better. Having a 20-30 feet tall monkey would look dumb and ridiculous in a real live action movie. So I actually like what Freecolo said. I would accept and like an oozaru that way.
Well, theres no way that it could be normal Oozaru…and Giant Piccolo is very doubtful…It would be pretty neat if they did have it to where the Saiyan would just look like SS4, except w/o the strength…seeing how they have it planned to not make it up to a normal SS4 and stop with SS1…
C.W. Im not 100% sure but do you see what im talking about? Heres what i think. I think Bulma is around goku when he turns and that stunt double guy is goku changed in the early stages of changing…with like fur i think he will look like a wolf and an ape…but again i stress this rossum used the word Monster and wwhen i see that big giant dork i dont see monster..
@JoseMP: Hmmmm That sounds very creative JoseMP. I just hope they do Oozaru well, because I always enjoyed Vegeta transforming into Oozaru. The ideal of having Oozaru look like Ssj4 kind of worries me a bit, but it sure sounds like a good ideal if done well.. Right now I prefer seeing a Giant ape crushing rocks.
heres why i think this is really big and significant news. Emmy, while not being the most well known actress might be the most talented one in the movie (arguably). When I heard she was casted my first thought was thats the chick from the Phantom of The Opera movie. I never saw it but i heard she was really good in it and i just thought its great they have a serious actress on board for DB. Plus she is really hot and has a look to her that shes really smart…which is Bulma dead on you know. bluma is a scientist but a fine one in the cartoon or anime. Ok heres my point about her being a really talented actress. She did the work you know, She got the role and i bet you every dollar i have as a good actor or actress you do alot of research in preparing for a role. She went and read the manga and all that good stuff she probably read more than any of the actors im willing to bet. she said its a monster thats very tall then she goes on to add its ACTUALLY an 8 ft tall man. As if to say its not really that tall in Real life its 8ft…..how is this not a DEAD give away to any of you?

hahahaha nice C.W. yeah i think in this case they are staying true to the manga…i dont think it will look like anything we have seen before on screen I think this is an aspect of the movie worth getting really excited about!!! Rossum practically told us that There will be Ooozru!! HAHa yeah i think this is fox leaking a bit of news to hype the movie becuase the response to piccilo has not been the greatest i on one hand think he look great. but yeah its very exciting!! EXCUSE ME EVERY ONE. I think, in fact, i am pretty sure that i herad way back, that mexican site “movieland” or whatever it was called, that goku fights a VERY TALL MAN in the tournament. I bet my bottom dollar that that pic you guys are showing and speculating to be oozaru, is actually that very tall figther. If i am not mistaking, the spanish article said that they saw him in a party after the shooting was over, they asked who he was and they told that he was a figther in the movie. He may also get on a monkey suit and play as goku’s oozaru, but that pic is from his tournament clothing.
It’s defiantly not a Fulum assassin!! The fulum assassins don’t have that long black wrist band on there arm.

This 8ft monster/man thing intrigues me. Oozaru, Raditz, whatever, I’m quite curious! I’m thinking it’s more Oozaru, personally.

I dont think its Piccolo s monster or Raditz. Im pretty sure its oozaru. She said its incredible monster, it sounds the monster is important and its not like last few minutes, when they re going to show it. And one more thing, she said this monster is based on somthing. It sounds to me like a manga that Akira was inspired by to make dragonball, there was somthing about monkey, am I right? This information was given by Emmy Rossum, so what? maybe it means she took part in scene, when she got to say to oozaru for ex: “goku, calm down, its me, dont you remeber?” but she didnt know where to look exactly, because they are going to add that monster as a special effect. So they said: “its got his eyes at about 8 foot high”. but oozaru used to stay bent, not straight. It could look bigger. And at last, idea of oozaru being that big could be better, because of nudity problem. I think it is going to stay in pants
But if they are going to use oozaru in the first movie, what it is going to be with vegeta and gohan beaing transofmed? They will make oozaru again? This is why I think the idea of half-transofmation could be true. I draw my version of oozaru

@Deadlock04: Oozaru being over 8 feet is cool with me, because there are Gorillaz that size in real life. I would prefer him to be the size of Mighty joe young, but 8 feet is still good. If they do decide to make Oozaru 8 feet, I hope they make him really hyper and very distructive.

I don’t get why people are in denial about them messing up the Oozaru. You guys saw what they did to Piccolo, Goku, Roshi…everyone. So why not the Oozaru? As if it’s impossible for this brilliant production crew to mess that up by ‘adapting’ a giant monkey into an 8-ft tall monster-man version of Goku.
On IMDB it says that Chris Sabat will be doing the voice of Shenron. Is this old news to you all because this is the first I have ever heard of it. How cool though to bring in someone from the anime series.
