First Dragonball Review?
Aint it Cool News reader Don sent in a review for a supposed early cut of the film. It contains spoilers if legitimate, but honestly it sounds like something anyone could have made up.
I am a huge fan of your site and constantly visit here but this will be my first time emailing you about something. I love geek movies because there is nothing better than a well made geek movie. Well after watching the 95-100 minutes (excluding credits) of the movie i say this movie was solid. Ya you heard that right. I simply love the anime but I was very very nervous about it being made by fox. After all the studio has been making nothing but shit lately. Another reason why I was worried about this movie is that the director is James Wong who made final destination 1 & 3 and The one starring Jet Li. What I watched had unfinished sfx and with no scoring done yet. Also… they will be adding one or two scenes which will be shot sometime end of october.
Now let me list the positives of this movie
1) Action – I wasn’t expecting the action scenes to be as awesome as they were. Simply put the best thing about this movie. The last action scene of Goku vs. Picollo are simply amazing and when picollo takes out his huge fucking ass sword with weird rectangle shape tablet attached it at the tip of sword and slamming it on goku was fucking awesome. Lot of blowing shit up, super cool flying scenes, awesome ki blasts. This fight scene was around 13-15 minutes long. There are other small action scenes that are fun and entertaining with slo mo but nowhere as good as the picollo vs. goku scene.2) James Marsters as Picollo was awesome. He was perfect as picollo. Very mean and a villain that makes you say fuck ya kick all their asses. Oh and Picollo transforms into a light greenish color picollo towards the end of the movie.
3) Justin Chatwin as Goku. This guy surprised me a lot. I really didn’t like him when they casted him as goku but he did a damn good job in the acting department and he nailed the KAMEHAMEHA line.
4) Oozaru – the giant monkey is in the movie. Goku turns into a 8-9 feet tall giant baboon when he looks at the moon. It was awesome looking though a bit CGI. Maybe they will fix it later.
5) Emmy Rossum as Bulma- She was really really good in this role. I liked how she never acted like a wimpy girl and eventhough she knows she can’t win against the evil forces yet she kicks ass. A strong female role I will say.
6) Fullum Assasins – I thought adding these monsters were bad idea but they were pretty damn cool and there was an enitre scene where Goku and his friends fight these monsters and that fight scene was pretty damn good.
7) Joon Park as Yamcha was pretty cool. His acting was spot on like the character and they showed some cool fighting techniques of his. The fight scene between him and goku was good.
Negatives
1) Story – Dragonball fans will be dissapointed with some of the changes they have made with stories and characters etc. Krillin isn’t in the movie, Tien isn’t in the movie too. High school setting for the first 22-23 minutes was so not needed but ah well typical hollywood garbage of adding bullshit like that.
2) Jamie Chung as Chi Chi – Ya this was another casting i didn’t like and my worst fears came true. Her acting is as bad as Jessica Alba’s in F4 movies but thankfully her screentime isn’t that big. I really wished they could have tried harded to find someone else. I hope for sequel she can improve if there is one of course.
3) Chow Yun Fat as Master Roshi – I was dissapointed with this. I wanted the fucking perverted roshi who fucking grabs breasts and asses like in the anime but alas all of that is fucking gone. Also he acted like Mr. Kesuke Miyagi. You know what I mean. The lines he spoke were fine but I felt he was uncomfortable in the movie. Very dissapointed.
4) Shenron the dragon – Ah another huge dissapointment. This is like sentinel in X3 all over again. FUCK FUCK FUCK you fox. So ya they get all the dragonballs and the dragon appears but the dragon is hiding behind fucking clouds and you only see his shadow. The voice of the dragon was provided by none other than Christopher Sabat who provided the voice for the dragon in the american version of the anime. When the dragon spoke it was chilling but damnit it was hiding behind clouds. One can hope they will fix this but chances of that are very slim.
5) Eriko Tamura as Mai was underused character and frankly speaking if that is what their intention was to underuse her then they might as well have not added this character and just added more picollo. Her moments were cool and she basically was there to show her nice boobies but ya she was kinda wasted.
Overall, I would give the movie a 6.5/10 simply because i was expecting disaster but it turned out better. The positives I mentioned coupled with some cool funny goku moments like eating a massive turkey etc. were hilarious. If only Master Roshi was perverted and Shenron was visible I would have given this 9 but ah well they messed up there. Hopefully they will fix shenron as they still have 5 months to movie’s release but if not then well fuck you to fox and james wong. But in all seriousness I am glad it aint the disaster I thought it would be. Hopefully you guys will post this. Thank You.

hmmm, AICN is a trustworthy site … but then again, for a review, it is very general and broad. maybe AICN got fooled themselves… man, its still like 5 months to go. ugh! either way, until we get official media from fox, we’re all just speculating…

Ok. Positives are indeed positive. But why Negatives sound not so negative, even a little positive to some extent, just like Eriko is too good to be just a trivial character, just like the cliche of interview to enlarge one’s advantage indirectly when being asked about disadvantage.
I found a fatal flaw in the review, fatal in my opinion.
95-100 minutes (excluding credits)
So, is it 95, or 100?
5 minutes is already a big gap which shouldn’t be unnoticed for someone who often discusses movies.
If you checked your time, at least you could say more approximate time, such as 97 or 98. Even if you add “or so” after that. it’s still more reliable than a 95-100.
If you intend to keep the total length secret, I don’t think it’s a must.

Personally I think it’s fake. He said that Goku transforms in the full moon. In the trailer you see an eclipse.

Some interesting things brought up in that, but the guy sounds like a poor excuse for any sort of movie reviewer. There are parts that he listed as negatives that I don’t think ppl will find so bad when they actually see in the movie, don’t forget IF this guy actually saw the movie it was incompleted. they are adding those scenes that are filming and who knows after that it could improve some of those scenes. Glad that this is simply classified as rumor though…

Sorry to burst your bubble kiddo, but this sort of thing (early screenings…) aint unheard of. That’s not to say that the review is real, but that if it’s a fake, it’s not because the dude saw the movie six months in advance. Hell, the new Harry Potter movie got screened a few months back, and wasn’t due to hit until this November before they decided to push it back to next Summer. So the review is entirely plausible, even if it’s potentially a fake.
Question: Is Chris Sabat really doing the voice of Shenron? Cos I’d be soo happy if he was… I love Chris Sabat!! :glomp:

Sounds like bullshit to me.he only talks about stuff weve mentioned.like goku and the giant turkey…i think he could have mentiponed something else that hasnt been posted already.On the other hand the good news he said sounds pretty nice.

Most of the stuff this Don guy talked about we already know. However, some of the things he didn’t like about the movie doesn’t bug me much. I don’t know, I’ve heard more convincing stuff. Sorry, don’t buy it.
I’m going to be kinda pissed if the movie is only like 100 minutes long, at least they should hit the 2 hour mark. But im getting even more and more excited over this.

This is prob fake. I thought I read some where the highschool was only like ten min. worth of scenes. All I know is that this is gonna be a good movie. There even putting more scenes in to make it better.
well i dont know bout yall but i watch dbz all my life since i was a kid currently 21 and i know that they fucked up alot of shit in this movie and i havent even seen it for example goku was a kid when he fought king piccolo and goku never went to high school i mean for crying out loud get real here and if the director is anything smart what makes dbz is the emotions that the characters express to get there inner strength like when krillen is killed goku transforms or a friend is hurt he explodes with anger cause of hurt that is what dbz is about findin the strength when ur outclassed to overcome the bad cause of the love you feel. i cant wait to see is these actors can show some raw emotion with there characters like it should be and the right jui jutsu as long as i watched it and for others who have to then yall should know each character does have a significant amount of techniques and martial arts. well good luck hope its good

This review = fake as hell. He does not mention when he saw it, how he saw it, or any other specific details of the movie. Also, if this movie is only 90 minutes, why would they waste almost a half hour of the movie in the highschool setting? That’s a quarter of the movie wasted right there, and only an hour of the action scenes and conclusion to the movie? That’s insane, and it would be pretty poor pacing for only an hours worth of a movie when its mostly wasted in Highschool. Sounds terrible.
Also, I can tell there’s no depth into how the characters were portrayed, and the action scenes are pretty vaguely described. Sounds like he read the script, then formulated that he “saw” the movie.
Furthermore. Even if he did see the movie, the only way he could have possibly seen it is if someone working near, or on the film was able to leak it to him. Even then, the person responsible would probably be fired, and a dumbass for sending out a copy of an incomplete movie. It makes no sense to review an incomplete movie.
Thats reviewing the movie based off of the teaser trailer. Totally lame. While I am interested to see how the movie turns out, this charleton review is total BS. Besides, most movie reviews don’t come until a few days, or weeks before the movie hits theaters. So, don’t believe everything you read.

As much as I want to see how good or bad it turns out, I will wait for a legitimate review from a respectable website, or film critic where I know it’s real. Movie’s have pre screenings, something weeks, days, or even months before it’s release.. I not saying this dude is legit, I think he’s a plant, but getting a review 5 months before it comes out isn’t hard to believe

is shenron not in this because this is a low budget film.
and if this films is successful (which I doubt) he might be in the sequel
but there are more positives so this might be good
