Joon Park Interview

November 5th, 2008 Leave a comment Go to comments

The Korean website Star News interviewed Joon Park (Yamcha) today, and we’ve got a translation.

I always wanted to be a Hollywood actor, because I’m not good at the Korean language for acting in a Korean movie.

Dragonball was my third audition in Hollywood. I went to the audition, and I was called up from the director to come audition again. When I went to audition again, there were actors who were well known in the U.S., so I had to fight them. I thought “Not a chance,” because I’m “God” in Korea, but a “shit” in the U.S. (laugh)

I entered the audition wearing a hat and shorts, and as soon as the director looked at me, he said “You are Yamcha.” I still can’t believe it. I won’t appear the first 25% of the movie, but I will later on.

I met Chow Yun-Fat for the first time when we traveled by helicopter. He was indeed a kind person. He was very friendly.

It isn’t easy to make a comic into a movie. It could have became too childish. So we were trying to maintain a middle ground. There will be a lot of CG in the movie. This is a family movie, so the shooting set was a very family-like atmosphere. “Speed Racer” was a very technical set, “Dragonball” set’s atmosphere was kind of like inviting staff to your home and having a barbecue.

Details of the movie are still a secret. It will be released on March 14th next year in South Korea and Japan for the first time in the world. Toys and video games will be released in the near future. My toys too. (laugh)

@http://www.sajin0084.deviantart.com: your link has a blank picture.. or unless it’s supossed to be blank?
Anyways, interesting interview. Since all the actors been talking about ALOT of CGI i guess that’s what we might expect from the film.
Oh and by the way, in my opinion.. I really wouldn’t call Dark Knight a family film. I think it’s a bit too dark and “mature/violent?” for it to be suitable for all ages. More of a Teen- Adult type of movie, even though a lot of kids enjoyed the film. Iron Man, Spiderman etc in my opinion were more family films. And I understand that they are going for a family filmish atmosphere. The Dragonball manga/anime series was/is an Adventure of epic and comic ( as in humor) proportions. Also valued/values good morals through Goku’s adventure and how he develops. Anyways everything sounds Great can’t wait for the movie, might fly to Japan in March ha! :-)

    November 5th, 2008 at 02:19 | #8

    hmm 8th if not 9 already:P

  8. November 5th, 2008 at 02:23 | #9

Why do they keep on saying it going to be a family movie? I mean i understand that Dragonball is for kids too we all grew up watching Dragonball when we were kids and i know that the violence will be toned down compare to the manga/anime but the question is… is it going to be PG or PG-13?

  9. November 5th, 2008 at 02:29 | #10

Look all i’m trying to say is if you got characters like Piccolo and The Fullum Assassins this can’t be a PG movie.

  10. November 5th, 2008 at 02:30 | #11

@Mikey: Maybe because the anime was intended for all ages? I mean, Dragonball never had anything R-rated like in “Watchmen” or “300″ or even other animes such as “Ghost in the Shell.”

  11. November 5th, 2008 at 02:36 | #12

@Adam: I already know that Dragonball is for all ages but i’m just afraid that the battles will be town down to a Power Rangers level.

    November 5th, 2008 at 02:58 | #13

yes i agree with you @Mikey

but we all know that the real fast and kii blast overloaded fights was in dbz, i mean sure the db fights was great and sometimes brutal too (lol think on uranai baba hihi) but no compare to dbz

i mean its logical……goku with 15-18 years and goku the adult its a very big diference

  13. Sushiro_San
    November 5th, 2008 at 02:59 | #14

i think the real madness will come in the dbz movie
then we all gonna look like 8O

    November 5th, 2008 at 03:10 | #15

lts think about dragonball. dragonball z will be more brutal thats for sure but dragonball can be sort of a small look at how this saga (if fox do a triology) will be in the fututre

    November 5th, 2008 at 03:10 | #16

    @ Adam
by the way thx very much for those news/interwiew

  16. November 5th, 2008 at 03:21 | #17

One of the most brutal fights in the Dragonball franchise for me was Goku vs. Piccolo. Like when Piccolo rip his arm off, Goku choking out blood after Piccolo’s surprised attack and Piccolo braking Goku’s leg left Goku screaming in pain, man that battle was EPIC 8O

  17. November 5th, 2008 at 03:27 | #18

I know that the movie won’t be that violent but i hope it’s anything like the last fight between Spider-Man and the Green Goblin mix with The Matrix fighting style.

  18. November 5th, 2008 at 03:34 | #19

    @Mikey:
Yea that fight was epic and will be when we see it live:)
can someone just let me know if the link I gave to the banner is working since @James Alexander:
    said it comes up blank:(
Come on I know use want to see the live action kamhemaha;)

Joon Park seems really excited about the movie, which is always good. i’m just looking forward to seeing him portray one of my top 5 favorites of the DB series (they suck for cutting him out of GT, he could have at least provided comedic relief, even though he doesn’t fight anymore)

    November 5th, 2008 at 06:17 | #24

From March 14th to April I wont be coming to look at news on any website because Iam sure some Jerk is gonna watch a cam version of the movie and forums all around are gonna be full of spoilers.

  24. November 5th, 2008 at 07:01 | #25

@http://www.sajin0084.deviantart.com – it looks… cool. u tryin to copy my aura ey?! :P hehe keep trying :D ..

  25. November 5th, 2008 at 07:49 | #26

“because I’m “God” in Korea, but a “shit” in the U.S. (laugh)”

“I entered the audition wearing a hat and shorts, and as soon as the director looked at me, he said “You are Yamcha.””

Afortunely he didn´t show his ID  I don´t have problems with that, however Yamcha never used Clairol, I think

I´m worried about fight scenes level, because, if you watched the trailer, when Goku throws an energy blast to Piccolo and Piccolo spins, the explosion generates from the floor. If the energy ball was in horizontal direction, why the explosion appears form the floor? the energy blast did go down? and a energy blast cant make that explosion with fire, at least that the fight could be in a oil well.

    November 5th, 2008 at 07:55 | #27

well that confirms that there will be merchandise like a video game I knew that there was going to be a game you cant make a huge movie like that without releasing a game.

i love how the new is rolling in lately

  27. November 5th, 2008 at 08:01 | #28

So more confirmation that the movie will be family-friendly aka rated PG. Wonder why he said they didn’t want it to be childish when they want the movie to be family-friendly?

  28. dj
    November 5th, 2008 at 08:12 | #29

@Shriveled Member J: family friendly is the equivalent of pg13

    November 5th, 2008 at 09:22 | #32

I love how he got the part. Wong just looked at him and said he’s Yamcha, just like that. He could just see it right away. I’m telling you, this is going to be like back to the future, where everyone’s perfect for their part.

The closer we get to release date and the more news we get, the more positive people are. its awesome  hehe, i admit, i didnt like this guy as Yamcha at first but when i did a lil research on him and watched some vids of him i liked him as Yamcha a lot more, he has that attitude haha.
and @ DPA, In that trailer (well, it wasnt a proper trailer if you remember right) the special effects hadnt been done so obviously it wasn’t perfected with explosions etc. So no need to keep going on about it, we all know dude =] just wait for the real one, no matter how hard it is to be patient. i HATE being pateint lol

    November 5th, 2008 at 10:05 | #36

It’s nice to finally hear from another actor other than Jamie Chung :P

  36. Masenko-Huh?
    November 5th, 2008 at 10:22 | #37

I’m curious on the job that he’s going to do as Yamcha, but it was nice to finally hear an interview with Joon who so far has said so very little about his involvement with this movie. I’m excited to see how the finished film comes out.
But about the ki blasts, perhaps that’s one of those little special effects botchings that are forcing the studio to reshoot scenes and re-edit? Just thinking on that.

@http://www.sajin0084.deviantart.com: I don’t know, for some reason it doesn’t work for me then, :(
Dragonball in my opinion, like Adam was saying, is suitable for All Ages, which = Family Adventure/Film In this Case. I used to have all the old school bond movies on VHS back then, and they were all PG lol.. All he did was sleeping with women and killing, and it they were PG.. Until Later on, ratings starting taking in more effect, And now the bond movies are PG-13.
    Anyways have a nice day

  38. November 5th, 2008 at 11:05 | #39

I wounder who those other actors were.

  39. November 5th, 2008 at 11:10 | #40

    @James Alexander:

I don´t know the differences between something “childish” (yeah right, pervert Roshi and naked Bulma is too childish xD) and the changes that they´ve done , something too… “teenish”?
