Jamie Chung Talks Reshoots

December 9th, 2008 Leave a comment Go to comments

MTV’s splashpage talked with Jamie Chung (Chi-Chi) about sequels and the recent reshoots.

Not long after the first trailer for “Dragonball” underwhelmed the internet, our friends over at Cinematical discovered that Fox was scheduling reshoots for the big-screen adaptation of the wildly popular anime/manga, presumably to fix a bunch of scenes that looked awful in the teaser.

Half true, “Dragonball” actress Jamie Chung told MTV News. They are only re-shooting ONE scene. One very big, very important scene.

“I think it’s just one scene that they’re gonna have to reshoot and it’s the end fight,” Chung said of what they were re-tooling. “I fortunately will not have to go back. I think it’s the big fight between Justin Chatwin and James Marsters.”

That would be between hero Goko and villain Lord Piccolo, names that sound vaguely dirty but apparently aren’t. Chung, on the other hand, plays Chi Chi, which doesn’t sound dirty but is. Got all that? Good, me neither.

“Like, ok, Chi Chi. I heard rumors [that] each character is named based off a fruit. So I was being interviewed by this guy from Japan, and I was like, ‘Is it true? Is Chi Chi a name for a Japanese fruit?’ He was like, ‘No…it’s kinda like an international saying for…’ ‘Oh right, boobs!’” Chung laughed of the unintentional comedy of her character’s name. “There’s no way around it! We shot it in Mexico so my trailer said Chi Chi. It’s a name I can’t seem to shake.”

She’s going to have to get used to it. According to Chung, sequels are already planned for the anime adaptation, with all the main actors signed on for multiple projects.

“We’re signed on for two more,” she said. “Hopefully, I hope the movie does well. There’s lots of places that Fox wants to go with this.”

    @Yuri:
Um because that is Mai transformed onto Chi Chi, and yes transformation were in Dragonball.
And You cant compare lord of the rings (which had lots of changes made for the movie) to dragonball.
This has been said before, LOTR is a book, a western book.
Dragonball is a manga, a japanese comic.
The culture differences are huge. You may not know this but amereica has a verry small anime and manga fan base. Lots of people dont like anime and manga.
And dragonball is meant for kids so you know. Its Shounen, boys 7-12 or there abouts (however like most shonen jump manga it is mainstream, what everybody likes, all ages). Japan just has a huge culture difference on how they look at sex.
If you dont believe me go read Mahou Sensei Negima. Then go and watch some adult anime like hellsing, tenjou tenje, hentai kama. These anime are intended for ages 16 and up in japan but we would give them an R rating.
People should stop thinking that just because there a fan that the movie should be made like the origanl thinking that everyone will like it. Besides want to see the original go watch the anime.

Yeah, and everyone will like this a-lot-of-changes movie xDDDD

@sajin0084.deviantart.com: well i understand but those who like manga are more agressive and creative than those who like marvel comics etc.. because sometimes marvel only think for a story in one way and theres no drama on specially moral lessons for kids or adult readers unlike the modern art of “anime” when u watched a lot u will notice that theres a lot of drama, actions and specially the moral lessons and the twist in anime. i dont know why sometimes they hate anime they dont look for the story they just look for the drawings etc.. they should know that they are now in a modern days they only stock on the past coz marvel style is common.

None of these actors have any idea what Dragonball is, especially the director.

@henry, james marsters seems to have a pretty good understanding of the show and had watched it all previously with this son.

    @ LLJ

If it was more like the anime, I’d still be thrilled. You could say the same thing about LotR. It followed the book and readers could tell what would happen where. I understand that some things need tweeking when it goes to live action and that’s why I would be interested. But the flat out changes make me very sad.

    @ sajin0084.deviantart.com

How are you sure that’s Mai? Yes, I know transformations were in DB. That was Oolong and Puar’s schtik. Mai worked with Pilaf and was the most competent of that group of three, which doesn’t say a whole lot. I just watched the leaked Japanese trailer and we do see a Chichi that has the bangs like Mai has. I’d be more inclined to think that’s Mai shapeshifted instead of the picture below.

Why do so many assume that they would do a Z story next, if there’s to be a next movie? You forget there’s more story to “Dragonball” than Piccolo Daimao. Without a Piccolo JR. saga the audience, I.E. newbies won’t know where he comes from when you get to the Raditz story. I think it would be a good idea to at least squeeze a scene in to set up Dr. Gero’s secret research at this point too. Nobody new will want to dig through the anime looking for some reference back story to a defeated fighting force, and the vengeful mad scientist that was the tech. genius behind it all. Unless of course, they don’t intend to carry it that far. If they do I wouldn’t expect a Z story until at least 2018.

I have to say, this movie looks like absolute shit. If I hadn’t heard anyone’s name or Goku’s (not Goko’s) Kamehameha at the end, I would have thought this was just another generic martial arts movie. I thought this was another one of those spoof trailers where they just splice together a bunch of martial arts movies and add stuff that sorta looks like the movie, but then Goku took out his gi uniform, and my stomach dropped as I realized this was no joke. Goku looks like he should be lead singer to some shitty teen idol band. I know its hard to translate from the anime because the special effects required to make them match would be outrageous, but this…?

    @ Broly

    are you serious?

Marvel beat the stuffing out of DC a long time ago, because where DC just made the same superheroes with redundant powers again and again (Batman is the exception), Marvel characters had real, normal lives.

the flash was a scientist, Superman isn’t Clark Kent….he’s superman all the time blending in with weak humans, wonder woman was an amazon. ok….

the x-men are mutants, basically labelled a dangerous species that needs to be purged, although they try to help their persecutors whenever possible. other marvel characters may drift in and out of the X-Men’s employ, but are similarly conflicted with large AND small scale trials and tribulations…many have skeletons in their closets, or are constantly being treated horribly by the very people the love, or who make up their society.
-Storm was revered as a goddess in her native african tribe, where she ruled & advised justly, as opposed to the way many other people would, given much power and influence.
-Gambit was a gangster, who the x-men initially left in antarctica shirtless due to his crime of causing the genocide of the Morlocke(sp) mutants.
-Wolverine is basically a form of immortal to a degree who’s lived over 120 years. He’s fluent in japanese due to time spent as an assassin (KILLING HUMANS) in Japan. he was also captured by the government and used as a spy/weapon.
-Dazzler’s mutant power doesn’t do much of anything, and so she trained herself in the martial arts to get things done as a higher-class thief.
-Rogue resents her own powers of flight and super strength as she almost killed Miss Marvel accidentally with her ability/energy stealing power to obtain them. she has also never truly been able to have physical contact, let alone a relationship with another human being, because her ability CAN’T BE CONTROLLED.
-Beast is a scientist fluent in multiple languages, and well versed in many arenas of science and math (biotech, bioengineering, physics, ecology), with a love for reading, writing, and the arts. he also has never been able to maintain a relationship due to his girlfriends being publicly accused of beastiality.

i could keep going on about marvel, showing characters with many different dimensions, but if you care to find out something new, you should start looking up the marvel universe on wikipedia.

i could also go on about your chosen name being Broly, a character who was animé-only for dragon ball (not even an original creation of Akira Toriyama), and obvious bias toward the dragon ball series AND japanese culture as a whole, but i think you spouting your ignorance does enough to discredit your opinion. know when you’re being a mindless follower.

<- first saw dragon ball in france when i was 12. i didn’t know what it was, but it was amazing….the episode i’d later find out was Vegeta and Artificial Human 18 fighting on the freeway. ended up watching half the series before it came to america, and the whole series by the time america had hit the end of the Saiya-Jin Saga.

<- hardcore fan, and i STILL say this will suck as a dragon ball movie. it may be a popcorn kung-fu flick though. that’s still something to be wary about.

This movie is going to be worse than I herd. I saw the trailer, it was The worst thing I ever saw. I mean I grew up on this show, now its all messed up looking. Come on American actors? The anime was Japanese. This movie could have at least been animated. In my view there is not going to second and third one, if there is there going to make one of the all time greatest animes look more horrible.
