Jump Festa Report

December 19th, 2008 Leave a comment Go to comments

Jump Festa has come and gone, but we’ve collected the most important information on Dragonball: Evolution’s presence at the event for those of you who couldn’t attend.

First, at the 20th Century Fox booth, Goku’s and Bulma’s costumes from the movie were on display, as well as Yamcha’s truck and Bulma’s motorcycle. You can check out a video report (in Japanese) at the official Jump Festa website.

Next, a few people have noted that in the flyer for the movie, Akira Toriyama (the creator of Dragonball) is listed as an executive producer along with Tim Van Rellim. We aren’t sure how reliable this information is, but it wouldn’t be uncommon.

Unfortunately, no new footage of the movie was shown. Below is the only new material from the movie we could find, which is a photo of Bulma (Emmy Rossum) and Goku (Justin Chatwin) that was on display.

Dragonballfilm.es has a report (in Spanish) here and a video here.

Arlong Park also has some vague information on the panel, which includes info on the movie’s video game and a quote from Akira Toriyama!

Greg: “Bulma’s Bike is here evidently. This looks bad; they pulled out Akiba Idols to promote Nozawa. What were they thinking?”

(23:33 EST) Greg: “So far I am severely unimpressed. We’re listening to airheads talk about some very basic stuff.”

“Finally some interesting information coming out. Nozawa thinks Cell is the most frightening villian.”

(23:51 EST) Greg: “First game pictures look like DBZ Sparking but with real textures. Bulma seems to be a fighter this time around. They’re also giving out door prizes; Movie Tickets, etc. One guest won a role in the dub of the movie.” (Live Action Movie?)

(00:05 EST) Greg:“Toriyama left a message to the cast and crew of the movie: He felt surprised when he saw everything but after meeting the cast and crew, he felt they were splendid. He hopes that it will become a new Dragon Ball to be enjoyed and confirms that he is very much looking forward to it.”

The international trailer (available online) was presented along with a video introduction by Justin Chatwin and Emmy Rossum.

@DjiNN: I think we will see even other trailers…this one, no matter how awsome it was, it didn’t show lots of things, there’s still a lot to reveal, and could well be more of a teaser trailer than a trailer itself, like the ones shown when the movie is about to premiere… :) i hope so, i can’t wait to see more…

you know what i would enjoy? To see Mr Satan in the tournament, lol…him showing up bragging at the tournament as the current champion…and in the second movie he would go out to fight the sayans and would get his ass kicked like in the Cell saga, and then even wathcing Goku fight and pratically pissing his pants with fear, lol… Just saying this because we might not see a Cell saga, so i think this would add a really nice humour touch… :)

@http://www.sajin0084.deviantart.com: How can flying, super strength and super speed and engery beams not be classed as super powers? all those atributes are superpowers.

i do see were you are coming from though, but they are still superpowers

Superpowers are a standpoint by which they are viewed by the common populace.

Super strength/energy beams/super speed = super powers to us. Those same things equal normalcy in most DBZ settings, such as among the saiyans. I think that’s what he meant; though I don’t know how many characters will be able to fight like that outside of the regular cast in the movie.

    @ that guy
    I agree with u dude that’s superpowers

  8. December 22nd, 2008 at 19:12 | #8

    @that guy:
Im just saying there is nothing special about what they have in the fact that it is natural (in there world) to achieve such a level and anyone who dedicates the time can do it. Other super heroes are so because of no reason of there own, they didnt choose it.
But thats just my opinion and if you think there super then thats fine with me:)

@UnbridledPhoenix: @http://www.sajin0084.deviantart.com: Yeah i fully understand your theory, I would still consider their abilities as superpowers though. A super sayain is considerd super

Yeah, Superman gets his powers from the yellow sun (wow, what a bi-tch). He didn’t train for it. Basically powers that are just given to them, strip them off then they are useless.

The Z-characters are naturally powerful even in there home-planets, it’s the way they were born (well Saiyans, and other alien races).
Look at the human Z-fighters, they were born normal but they trained super hard to be where they are right now.

  12. December 22nd, 2008 at 21:46 | #12

@Kid Green: LOL hahah. ah man so jump fiesta was a disappointment. all we got was that one new pic. well hopefully comic con is better.

IM REPAIR MAN MAN MAN MAN MAN MAN MAN MAN…..MON!

The point isn’t that the Z fighters are considered superheroes, it’s that what they can do is considered ’super-human’. Thus, to the general audience, they have superpowers. The fact that such powers are normally considered super generalizes them into a super powered genre. As DB fans, we know the difference. However, they are still the same, story element wise.

Well I guess you’re right. They may be considered a super powered genre, but it is different than the ones people see in comic books.

    Here’s more info from Greg:

So they made a big hoot about Japan getting the live action movie first on March 13th. Nozawa wants it to be first here because, “…DB belongs to Japan!” So they showed us the trailer. Turns out it’s just the trailer.

It was the first time to see the trailer for many of the fans. Why? Because Japanese people suck ass at using computers.

Piccolo was laughed at. Flat out.

When Goku said Kame Hame Ha there was audible laughter.

Nozawa said she was surprised because Goku was such a hunk and Yamcha looks like some bumpkin which should be the other way around.

The idols said it’s strange to see such a young Roshi and that it’s hard to picture him being a perv like that. (Later Nozawa would say, “You can tell he likes young girls!”, apparently commenting on his shirt out of the blue which directly contradicted that comment and the feeling of the crowd so it seems she was fed that line)

Then Nozawa laid the smack down on the American Kame Hame Ha. She said in Japan they extend the ‘Ka’ OR the final ‘Ha’ but in America they extend the first ‘me’ which just makes it sound way off.

Then they showed us a ’special’ video message from Chatwin and Bulma’s actress line-reading. Turns out this was just a message they had playing on a loop in a little enclosed DB movie museum thing out on the show floor that I would see on Day 2.

    Anyway…

It’s ALWAYS a pleasure to see actors and actresses doing special messages for Japan in trailers. Bruce Willis, James Franco, Keanu Reeves, George Lucas & Steven Spielberg and many, many others tend to [be forced] to do this and it’s a hoot. You can tell these are the REAL people behind the names because they look genuinely disinterested, slur their speech since they no know one is listening and constantly look off camera to read their lines. The best is when they run out of lines and just say stupid shit. But NO ONE did it as terribly as Chatwin. He should have just turned his head sideways and started talking.

I say this with no spite in my heart over the film. I genuinely do not care. The opposite of love isn’t hate, it’s apathy, which is how I’ve felt about anything related to DB in the US for about 8 years now. He was just doing an AWFUL job. Bulma totally outclassed him on that front.

Anyway so they were seated next to each other and asked us if we were enjoying JUMP Festa. Chatwin said he’s, “very honored” (looking off-camera) to be able to play the role of Goku. He says that he tried to put part of himself in Goku so you can expect to see part of him in the “iconic” character. Thanks. Thanks man. We needed part of you in an ICONIC character.

Bulma said she only found out about her casting shortly before shooting began so she didn’t get all the stunt training the others did. She said she enjoyed playing Bulma who is the smartest girl in the world.

Chatwin stupidly ended it by saying they hope everyone goes to see it “…so we can make 5 sequels.”, apparently being uninformed that there isn’t a word for sarcasm in Japanese. Nozawa read the subtitles and was shocked, “What? They already decided to make 5?”, to which the MC’s said no, it was an ‘American joke’ which is their way of explaining sarcastic humor. Those crazy Americans.

They also commented it was the first world debut for Ayumi Hamasaki as the singer of the theme song. They wondered what she’d sound like singing ‘Head-cha-la’. I suppose you could call this a ‘Japanese joke’.

So they unveiled movie game pics for the first time. I imagine they will be online or in V-Jump soon. They look like the Sparking series models with realistic textures instead of cartoony ones. The game is for PSP and details were zilch but Goku and Bulma were shown in still-picture fighting.

Then came the letter from Toriyama which Nozawa read to us.

    I will paraphrase here.

‘When I first saw some of the film I thought, “Huh!?” but then I met the cast and crew and they were all splendid. I hope this can be the start of a new kind of Dragon Ball and that I’m very much looking forward to it.’

One big question for to truly determine the success of this film….where do we go or who do we contact about getting our money back if this movie blows and disappoints Dragonball Z fans who truly enjoyed the original story? if its truly a success than we wont want a refund right?

By the way i saw a picture of what was said to be Grandpa Gohan….wasn’t he supposed to have died after Goku had transformed into a giant monkey and have killed him while he was a kid before he even met Bulma? i don’t like changes in story…

It sound like Greg had some issues. He was upset at people for finding the banter between actors funny.(Which it is supposed to be.)

Greg was tainted by over the top negativism.

The voice actress for Goku even went on to confirm that Roshi’s perviness makes it in… and he bashes on it unceremoniously.

I will wait for a better report. A more accurate report. He wasnt even there for the DB area on top of that.

    on to the good news…

    1. Sounds like the Dragon Ball: Evolution game for the PSP is looking good so far!
    Realistic Tenkaichi like character designs.

    2. New Dragon Ball DS game is on the way! RPG style from the looks of it.

    3. Roshi’s got his ecchi back!]

    4. Akira Toriyama has given DB: Evolution a Thumbs Up!
    : ‘ ))

    @ssj3kakarotto:

I have a very simple solution for you. First of all, this movie WILL NOT RUIN the franchise! The anime and the manga will still be around! If you don’t like this movie so much then simply don’t watch it! Go buy the anime or the manga and enjoy that! Just push the idea of this movie out of your head! Akira didn’t say he loved the movie, he simply said that he hopes it will be a new dragonball for old and new fans alike to enjoy! I’m sure Akira isn’t jumping for joy that they changed a few things! EVERY ADAPTATION IS GOING TO BR CHANGED A LITTLE! The dark Knight, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Superman, Blade; all of these movies were not EXACTLY like the comic books. You can criticize all you want, but Akira created dragonball and if he finds something in it he likes so it can’t be all bad! Haters like you really don’t make any sense, because you hate pretty much everything that isn’t the way you’d like to see it. The directors of hollywood can’t please everyone all the time. If dragonball was word for word like the anime, then the movie would be so boring! Bulma not having blue hair; big deal it would look so gay and stupid anyway. Don’t complain about goku not having is usual cheerful persona in this movie because we’ve only seen five minutes worth of footage with him! Roshi isn’t bald, old, and wearing a turtle shell; so what! The turtle shell would look gay and stupid. I’m not saying that this roshi is great, but I want to wait and see roshi for myself in theaters before I judge too harshly! Krillin was dead during the piccolo saga anyway (which is the saga that this movie is based on). Am I upset about the changes? Sure I am! Am I going to bash the whole movie? No, because I am a fan of dragonball and I will not turn my back on anything related to dragonball including this not so perfect movie. Remember; “you can’t judge a book by it’s cover”. That concept applies to movies as well! 8)

i knew it wouldnt be a success…goku going to school, his grandpa still being alive, Krillin’s absence… little changes are no big deal like if bulmas hair wasn’t actually blue or there but these changes are so drastic….
its like taking Megan Fox but changing her by adding 24 years, 100 pounds, and a pen!s, you know what you got than? Rosie o’donnell
That’s what this series was a beautiful stunning magnificent series and the american media changed into something fat, ugly, and just sad.
    Dragonball Z anime= Megan Fox
Dragonball live action movie = Rosie O’donnell
    I hope your happy america
