Justin and Emmy Interview

January 16th, 2009 Leave a comment Go to comments

The January issue of Japanese magazine Cinecon Walker has a new interview with Justin Chatwin (Goku) and Emmy Rossum (Bulma). Thanks to our source in Japan we have a translation.

Justin: To be honest, I felt strong pressure. Because my friends are all fans of Dragonball.

Emmy: Me too. I felt anxious because I’m a (Dragonball) fan and love the comics and anime. But when I got the role, I was incredibly happy. So I decided to enjoy it and to do my best as Bulma.

Justin: To me, to play Goku is such an honor.

The story of the movie is veiled in secrecy at this time. According to Justin, It seems that Goku will appear as a high school student.

Justin: Goku can’t fit in high school. A kind of outsider. And the death of his grandfather sets his fate up. So he starts on his journey and follows a different path.

Emmy: Bulma is a character who teams up with him. So we we get along pretty well. I acted a comical part with Chow Yun-Fat as Master Roshi. We were in Mexico and we could only speak English, so the three of us got together very well. I’m sure that our good team work will come through on film.

Justin: There are many action scenes that the director James Wong did carefully with visuals effects.

It seems that Justin had to train hard for the role.

Justin: For five months of shooting, I went to the gym after each day and worked out. I drank protein six times a day. So I was called the “Crazy Ninja” in Mexico City (laugh).

Emmy: Yeah, he was like a beast (laugh). Unlike Goku, my action scenes are using weapons and inventions. It was very hard but I think it made me mentally stronger.

Finally, we asked them about Japanese comics consistently coming to Hollywood in live-action.

Emmy: I think it’s because they have wonderful stories. In addition, they’re universal. It’s not surprising that Hollywood wants to make them into films.

Justin: Hollywood is superior in the technical things such as VFX, and they have various techniques in storytelling so that they can make Japanese comics into film. This movie too, it’s a condensed version of the original comic’s epic story. It’s difficult to express themes like Goku’s spiritual awakening verbally, but on film it can be easily expressed for kids to understand.

I can’t see nothing good in this movie.

In my opinion FOX have done a poor movie of the DB saga.

I’m tired of this true fan crap. If u were really a db/z fan u would support it no matter wut. Like in sports if u have a fav team and they decide to get a new coach or make a change do u quit liking it and call the fans that remained, not true fans? No, u weren’t a fan in the first place. A fan is aoeone who likes sumthin and always stick with them. So nxt time u say your not a true fan just think the onewho deserts it cuz of change or the one who sticks by it’s side

This is for u dragonfail, u idiot

I’m still going to see this movie even if it does suck because I have waited years for a live action Dragonball or Dragonball Z movie. I just hope that Hollywood doesn’t screw it up like they have done to other movies in the past.

No super saiyans. This is Dragonball, not DBZ. You know, the beginning and all. There were no super saiyans in DB.

im cool with the fact that they changed it to suit the younger generation…but not so cool with the fact that they changed it so much that it doesnt even sound like the original story at all…il love to see the movie to see how it turned out…but it already saddens me to see that most characters dont really look like the actual characters…was hoping they were all guna be asian or something…but anywho…i just hope that seeing the film will change my opinions in a positive way

This is gonna be such a crap film. Its got nothing to do with the real dragonballZ, and Picollo as a bad guy, that’s not right, the whol story contradicts that of the whole rea; DBZ World, it’s a disgrae. Goku is a japenes guy, and he doesnt have the hots for bulma. She only is supposed to come in cos she marries veget. WHERE IS VEGETA? And the others, this is a disgrace.

Has anyone even looked at these trailers? Not sure I like where this is going personally. So far, it looks like just another attempt by America to take something popular and make it better, only to screw it up so hardcore that it digs its own grave before it’s released.

  28. A faithful DB fan
    January 23rd, 2009 at 15:30 | #28

yepp you’re right Damarik… it is gonna suck… from what I recall Goku never went to high school, he was like a sort of jungle boy to begin with >>> clueless about the wonders of urban life, not knowing the difference between boys and girls… Goku must be pictured innocent and pure hearted. A kind and lovable person who would go out of his way to help people in need not some punk who’s a loner at school…and the story is so much americanised it suck… hollywood please stop trying to make action films from japanese manga, you’re just not up for the task…
