The Design of Evolution

January 31st, 2009 Leave a comment Go to comments

We continue our reveal of the pressbook with part 3, “Designing Dragonball: Evolution.” In this addition, insight is given into the look and feel of the film.

The unique look of the film’s action scenes complements its art direction and cinematography. Production designer Bruton Jones, along with visual consultants Richard Holland and Bruce Crone, referenced the Dragonball manga and anime, as well as a melting pot of styles reflecting the film’s multicultural, past/future reference points. The Dragon Temple, for example has Russian, Japanese and Chinese architectural influences.

Before production started, director of photography Robert McLachlan tested various film stocks before going with Fuji, which helped provide the heavily color-saturated look he was after. The color saturation adds to the intensity of the film’s solar eclipse, which in the story signals a potentially cataclysmic event. “We wanted our eclipse to be much more surreal [than a typical solar eclipse], with weird, intense, reddish colors,” says McLachlan.

Ariel Velasco Shaw oversaw the film’s many and varied visual effects, including the energy force known as Ki. Harnessing the power of Ki is one of the central tenants of Eastern philosophy – and connects the incredible goings-on of Dragonball to our real world. In the “air bending” technique of Ki, the practitioner pushes out from his or her chest, causing the air around them to ripple with distortion – and the ensuing energy force to impact their opponent. Ki is so strong that it draws the power of the universe as it is channeled through the practitioner skilled in its technique. Its ultimate manifestation is Goku’s “Kame-Hame-Ha” move.

Velasco Shaw and his team created various, character-appropriate forms of Ki. For example, a human character would possess a different Ki than an alien or a human-alien hybrid. Moreover, there’s a “younger” Ki for the more youthful characters, and an “older,” more developed Ki for Roshi.

The iconic and mystical Dragonballs were largely the creation of the visual effects team. “Everybody had an idea about what they should look like and what they needed to do,” Velasco Shaw says. The Dragonballs, courtesy of some intensive CG magic, have an otherworldly luminescence befitting their numinous properties.

Velaco Shaw also oversaw the two fully-realized CG creations: the monstrous creature Oozaru, as well as the Fu Lum, demon assassins, who regenerate when dismembered.

Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff, Jr., principals of one of the industry’s top special makeup and prosthetics houses, Amalgamated Dynamics Inc. (ADI), designed and created the prosthetic makeup for Lord Piccolo. The sophisticated prosthetics for Lord Piccolo, designed by Gillis and Woodruff, were applied by prosthetic makeup artist Edward French.

jcvts i understand this may be true. but what i am trying to say is that DB and DBZ they are fantasy and although they are making a live action movie i don’t think it necessarily has to make 100% sense in “our world”. if they made Oozaru look just like it did in the anime and someone bashed it who would care, who would make such a big deal about a tail and monkeys not really having one. would they not realize Goku is an alien and that creatures from another planet don’t have to match the animals on earth. i just think that if this movie is awesome which i think it will be its going to make everyone love this DB version and the original may be overlooked. when i think it should be the other way around. either way i am looking forward to this movie. i guess for me to have someone say that something wouldn’t be realistic in this world is self defeating because the entire premise of Dragonball is fantasy and unrealistic. thank you for your explanation though

that guy i looked up DOA the purple hair, ahh i kinda see your point but i just can’t see Trunks without the purple

i was recently watching the anime and while goku was fighting oozaru vegeta, goku commented that grandpa gohan would tell him to go to bed early because a monster would come out at night sometimes. so grandpa gohan does no about the oozaru, and it is evident that they kept this in the movie!

@J (亀): Every other source has said it’s going to be 100 minutes…so I wouldn’t believe that part. And for the rating, isn’t Austrailia infamous for toning down movies that kids will be viewing?? If so, that would explain it.

@Greg: They are making people shoot Ki blasts, put aliens that are supposebly demons, shape shifters, minion creatures (fu lum), flying, superstrong characters, so i guess we can say that this movie already has a lot of things that don’t make 100% sense in our world. The fact is that the movie has to make sense in terms of story and fantasy to be acceptable by fans and non-fans (trust me, a lot of people out there don’t like Dragonball and will see this movie anyway…like my girlfriend, lol). for that to happen, it must not copy it 100%, especially in terms of character’s looks. If you look closely, the dragonball drawing pattern doesn’t try to portray real things; monkeys with tails, round trees, and characters that have no real resemblance with humans in terms of body proportions.. It’s basically a somewhat kiddy drawing line – wich is not an insult, it’s common in many mangas and anime, and it’s Akira’s intention to portray the story like that. But now, transforming it into a movie creates a big risk. Despite having a kiddy drawing pattern, DB is actually directed towards a more teen-adult audience. Also, pratically any fan would ask for an adult epic movie and not a kid’s movie. If you copy the anime however, like what was done with the asterix movies for instance, it would most likely result into a childish and silly cartoony look, wich fans MIGHT enjoy (and i say might, but i believe many wouldn’t), and non-fans wouldn’t find any sense into it (i mean, the story is already big and somewhat confusing in the episodes, imagine explaining things in a movie). you have a movie that proves that point in “the magic begins”, where Roshi looks a lot like the anime version, lol…the movie is pathetic, btw. Don’t know how people who saw that movie still want Roshi to look like that.
Of course, you have the right to disagree. Remember that the fact that this whole story comes from a cartoon gives us a lot of freedom in imagination. Everyone who enjoys the manga probably already thought of real-life Dragonball version, and i bet no one had the same vision and interpretation. So, my vision of an adaptation of Dragonball is most likely very different from yours and from anyone else’s here, and the same thing happens with Wong. He’s making this into a movie that will please a vast majority of fans, knowing that many will have a different opinion of his vision. Demanding him to make everything to please me alone would be selfish.
For me, what i want to see in this adaptation is: humour, good fighting and action scenes, and fantasy, and i hope the movie captures the essencial parts in DB: the main characters’s spirit, wich i believe they are achieving, an epic dragonball quest, wich they seem to have too, and a good adaptation of their universe, wich i am also enjoying for now. Plus, those small details, like bulma’s blue hair stripe, roshi’s hawaian shirt, etc…are really a delight touch directed towards fans. :)
My final remark about the oozaru then: yes, if the movie is to be taken seriously by movie critics and by the general audience, then those details matter, and the more i think of it the more i believe they made a good choice in not putting the Oozaru as King Kong. If they make him look more like a really hairy, big and fearsome humanoid beast, that somewhat resembles an ape (and with a tail), it might be a lot better for the movie, it will direct the movie towards the more mature audience and will please a lot of people. But once again, that’s my opinion, and also…no one knows a lot about this movie, so these are more like expectations then true facts. My advice: let us see the movie and then have a real basis to criticize it. for now, what i see pleases me, though. :)

  19. January 31st, 2009 at 16:56 | #19

I have never talked about this before…. just because it annoys the hell out of me, but forr the people that ask goku to have a tail ( which in my opinion is best he doesnt bc the audience might know that theres something is not right there [Goku that is]) or that fact that he only turns into oozaru in an eclipse which is better than a full moon ( because, really, how many full moons do we have compared to eclipses, by the time goku would have turned 18 all of the world would have been left in pieces haha ) I think those people we would never be able to please…. but lets say we ( Fox ) did do that, they would have complained that the president is not a speakin dog, or that dinasours flew around, or that we would have a perverted pig that transformed into whatever the hell he wanted ( too bad he never tranformed into a hot brunnete and watched himself in the mirror ) we would never be able to please those people at all, So if your butthurt about the little, yet somewhat meaning less changes ie. bulmas hair, roshis baldness ( which every so called asian master out there seems to follow which would b so cliche ) , goku going to school ( even though its only 5 min of movie time ) , or chichi being a popular kid then you cry all you want, because, really… your just crazy, its an adaptation, look it up in the dictionary and then think about it. And stop just comming into dif blogs, youtube and other type of media just to say the movie is going to b shitty, bc you havent seen it either…. just the same way I dont say the movie is the best in the world, bc I myself havent seen it either….

@mchere1191: Well I got that from a government website. “.gov”. As for the rating, that’s the second time I’ve seen an official source say the movie will be rated PG, the second being that JUMP magazine or whatever that magazine was that was posted on here awhile back.

From what I’ve seen, I think it will be rated PG. I’m not going to argue these points because by now, it’s stupid and pointless to argue on the small details. Just letting you all know about the info. Take it into consideration if you want.

@Jaydi: It wasn’t the size that we were discussing here, my friend…i too wanna see a big Oozaru, even though the Oozaru’s size changes ithroughout the anime too. It’s the shape that’s being discussed. I just don’t want it to look exactly like an ape, since i feel it would look stupid and would not do good neither for the movie nor the anime. :) .

@Greg: Shows how much of Dragonball you watched. Mai ended up working for Piccolo after Pilaf released him. Yamcha didn’t have any scars on his face when he was first introduced.. Kami hasn’t been confirmed whether he is or is not in the movie, so Idk why the hell you’re complaining on that part. Are orange pants really that much of a big deal? I like the blue ones, gives more contrast to the look. Goku may grow a tail in mid movie, or it may be revealed he once had a tail. Afterall it says he finds out his “mysterious past”. In a way this movie combines the first 2 mangas of Dragonball, with Volume 14. This is following the source material very well. Jeez, I hope you never watched the Spiderman movies and enjoyed them. They sure as hell didn’t follow the spiderman storyline at all. I mean, he uses canisters to shoot the web, they don’t come out of his hans. Or hell, I hope you’ve never enoyed a “comicbook adapation” of a movie. And a manga is a japanese comicbook/graphic novel so I am allowed to make such a comparison.

thanks SSJ4Pikachu for being so forgiving to my mistakes…lol. thanks andre for agreeing with me, to jcvts i understand what you are saying but still i think orange on orange looks better, its just Goku. but i know its a movie adaptation and i know they have already done what they have done, i was just saying i wish they could have kept it a lil more dragonballish,=] i realize i was mistaken with the scars on yamcha’s face so there is no need to mention it any further. lol but thanks to everyone for not letting me forget =]

@SSJ4Pikachu: LOL although i didnt watch dragonball, i sorta agree with the complaints of greg, but im sure the movie will be fine. But with the spiderman storyline thing, They werent following the storyline exActly, they were just pulling different elements of the comix to make it into a movie, WHICH MADE IT AMAZING!!!!! like i thoroughly enjoyed the spiderman movies XD i especially like that they modded peter to give him the ability to shoot webs rather than running out of web canisters in the middle of a battle -,- :D

    On bulma’s hair:

One thing to remember is that bulma has “naturally” blue/lavender hair. Her dad has hair that color, as do her children, as do *other* non-related characters in the anime like Maron. It is not meant to be a “weird” thing she did as a rebel kid. But if they dye her hair, in the “Real world” the impression will be that it is fake, not her natural hair color, unless a bunch of extras have weird hair, and it is not the sort of thing the audience just buys without an explanation. Same with cat/animal people like Puar or Shuu or Karin or scattered extras over DB that are catlike. (or talking pigs and turtles). They are standard in the DB world, but would require a lot of explanation to be accepted as “normal” in a movie.

OTOH, Piccolo *is* an alien and is weird in DB. Oozarus are weird. Goku is an alien. Those things are baffling to the audience, but they are meant to be baffling even to the ordinary DB world person. So they can be kept in. There are fantastical elements being kept because the story is fantastical. The world the fantastical story is set in, however, doesn’t need to be weirder than it has to be.

On chichi being the “it girl”:

Well, the political structure of the DB world is very different, mostly independent towns and and cities ruled by local kings or elected rulers. Chichi is the daughter of the Ox King, and had a huge wedding banquet, and was an important person in her town, and definitely very wealthy. Translating the whole political sort of serf-like system into the real world also is hard. People can understand “rich popular girl” more than “Daughter or powerful ruler of small faming community,” especially when so much of the DB world is so “high tech” otherwise.
