The Locations of Evolution
The pressbook comes to a conclusion with part 4, “About the locations.” Hope you enjoy.
“DRAGONBALL: EVOLUTION†began production in Mexico City, where a private, ultra-modern school stood in for Goku’s high school. More than one hundred students were used as extras filling in the classrooms, parking lots and hallways. A sprawling private mansion in an exclusive residential area with English Tudor and Asian architectural elements was utilized for a high school party scene. An area within the city limits became Paozu City, where Roshi lives in a shack situated amidst towering skyscrapers.
After six days of filming in Mexico City, the production moved to Durango, Mexico, where the rest of the filming took place. “Durango has the spectacular outdoor locations including the high mountains, rock formations and deserts we required,†says executive producer Tim Van Rellim, who had worked on a film production in Durango a decade earlier. The production transformed an abandoned jeans factory with a million square feet into a working studio production facility with office, storage and mill spaces, along with a wardrobe warehouse, practical soundstages, and a ten-acre outdoor area that was turned into a backlot for outdoor sets.
High mountain desolate rock formations at Mexiquillo became the secret Toi San training facility.
Over 200 local Durango martial artists and their instructors were recruited and transported to the remote location for a big martial arts training scene. The cast and crew faced daily extremes in temperatures from chilly early morning lows of 30 degrees (Fahrenheit) to hot afternoon highs of 80 degrees (F.), as well as occasional dust storms fanned by windy conditions. Later in the shoot, the filmmakers utilized a major recreation facility in Durango as the location for the Toi San Tournament competition arena. One thousand extras filled the structure, cheering the action.
Los Organos State Park, with its spectacular rock formations that resemble church organ pipes, became the setting and inspiration for the story’s Dragon Temple, where pivotal action set pieces where captured. Towering desert sand dunes, called “Las Dunas De Bilbao,†north of Durango, were used for traveling scenes and as the exterior of a desert cavern in Yamcha’s habitat.
The Toi San marketplace was realized out of a grain storage facility from the 1800s that was found just outside of Durango. New architectural elements were added and then enhanced by set decorations mixing Middle Eastern elements with a flea market atmosphere.
Interior sets constructed and housed at the Jeans factory production facility, included the two-story interior of Roshi’s shack, a 20 foot high cavern interior, the Toi San Temple courtyard and corresponding interiors, Lord Piccolo’s Genesis Chamber and dirigible, as well as the green screen sets.

So Roshi does live in a shack in the city. You see Goku and the gang running to it in the trailer. This is pretty cool, how they made the sets and utilized the surrounding areas to pull off the scenery. Pretty cool. I’m digging all the different styles put into this film. Thanks man.

Is Roshi still the Turtle Hermit?
Aye, I wish they would show a scene with roshi and his island. I guess this makes sense though since the lot of his training was done elsewhere, and not on the island.
Say I know she wasn’t mentioned, but would Lunch get her 15min of fame? xD!

Ohh yeah without Mexico this movie would be nothing(ok maybe not), but man the movie looks pretty darn good, i cant wait to see it
@Masenko-Huh?: You know that’s something we don’t hear enough about, the planetary science. For example, is it possible that land masses move with much greater speed than they do in our world? Ours move in geologic time scales, but perhaps if tectonic plates rested on a more plastic, a term used when dealing with molten rock mantle? Continents broke up this way in our own earth’s history. They’re still moving!
Isolationism would be a harder practice in such a world. Perhaps Toriyama San used it as a visual cue about the power of mass communication to shrink the world. Where anyone with a satellite dish can point an antenna into the isolated skies and become connected to the world. Just another thing to give thought to, when dealing with alternate universes..
@Doritos: Doritos is right . Just as important, the first Transformers had half again as much budget as this movie and was made back in 2007. Inflation has made that figure even more impressive. This sequel bot movie production cost isn’t well known yet. I bet it’s double what was spent on this movie. Fox can’t be blamed for this. This movie was rushed into production because of the writers strike. The turmoil over the SAG strike issue, which was recently settled, was also a looming problem that manpower was diverted to, instead of film production. If that sounds hard to believe check “Astro Boy?” At the moment, a canceled movie, that was in production with a teaser already released.
Given industry rockiness, short track to release, and other problems we may only hear about months from now, if ever, were getting a pretty good movie. I’m hoping that Fox can make it up to us in a sequel. Let this movie do 300 to 400 mil. and then see where the franchise lands. ALL the actors will be in training 6 days a week and they’ll be talking 3-D…
man mexico’s awesome for this movie even if its gonna suck but its gonna have some awesome locations
