A Chat with Ariel Shaw
We recently had the pleasure of speaking with the visual effects supervisor for Dragonball: Evolution, Ariel Velasco Shaw, who had completed his work on the film. Ariel answered some questions that many of you have been asking lately.
DBthemovie: Were you (or the team) familiar with Dragonball before this film?
Ariel Velasco Shaw: Yeah, I have a 12 year old son, Milo who is a huge fan. I have always loved the series as well. It’s funny how excited the Visual Effects Houses were to get on the movie. They would do these Ki Energy tests where the CG artists would throw the Ki and then put in their incarnation of the effect.
Q: In the anime, everything seems to be bright and vibrant with fluffy cloud-filled skies. I noticed that, in the trailer, the scene with Gohan training Goku is very similar. Does that [scene] represent the overall look of the movie?
A: What I love about the look of the film is that it arcs from a terrestrial (earthly every day look, albeit, bright and hopeful) to something that is foreboding and other worldly. We went through a look development process (Look Dev) where we had our VFX houses develop the arc.
Q: Some fans were confused that the “Kame Hame Ha” [in the trailer] was executed with one hand. Was this the actual “Kame Hame Ha” or just a “Ki” blast put in the trailer to not spoil it?
A: The one handed ki blast was just a shadow crane strike. Goku has a limited arsenal of energy blasts that culminates in a Kame Hame Ha. Roshi’s arsenal is more powerful than Goku’s, and Piccolo has many types of energy blasts that culminates in a Spirit Bomb. I gotta say, the energy fights are pretty cool.
Q: Do any of the characters have auras in the film?
A: Yes.
Q: If Dragonball: Evolution does well, are you up for working on a sequel?
A: This was a great project to be a part of. The cast and the crew were fantastic. The Fox VFX department is second to none on helping the process along. Of course I’ll come back and join the party.

He’s kinda short with the answers, I was hoping for some more detailed answers. But hey, atleast he took the time to talk with Adam, that was cool for him to atleast be interviewed. Thanks for the interview; it answers the kamehameha question, and the aroura one as well.
hmmm…Adam, lucky you, you already know a lot more about the movie than us mere mortals, ehheh…but overall i liked it, i’m waiting to see those auras…

I wonder how the Oozaru will actually be apart of the movie, will he transform during the fight with Piccolo or rampage through the city or maybe in the world tournament and Master Roshi would have to destroy the moon or something?
I wish I can speed up time, I appreciate a good wait to build anticipation but I’m through the roof man I can’t friggin’ take it anymore! That’s it! Get your fist cams ready boys and girls, I’m about to go Oozaru-shit!!!!!

And I doubt we’ll see spirit bomb, in this one. I don’t know, it just doesn’t seem like they’d include that. Maybe that’s how he gets Goku out of his Oozaru form, because I’d hate to see Piccolo taken down by Oozaru.

Well you know what I mean, I was sooooo excited when I saw OOZARU’s eye’s dude. I don’t care what no one says, that has to be Oozaru in that trailer. I can feel his power level. I can’t wait to see the OOZARU’s full formation. This movie is going to be soooo AWSOME!!

@Tasunara: YEP!! They totally did there homwork on the Ki blasts. I love how they got into detail about it. For some reason they make me feel like I can do a Kamehameha.
Hopefully piccolo won’t do the spirit bomb cuz day would confuse people on the second movie

I will have to be honest with you guys, I actually didn’t want to see Oozaru in this movie, but seeing as it’s going in, anyway, I’m pretty glad they included it! I hope they add Kami in there, too, maybe as a cameo or during a story Piccolo tells Goku about the real creation of the Dragonballs and how he came to be and shit. That’d be pretty fucking sweet!

In the French trailer, the eye of that thing (I will assume it’s Oozaru) is bloody amazing, the way it squints as if it’s about to unleash it’s PURE RATH on whoever is unfortunate to get in his way.
Woooohooooooo, it has the eyes of King Kong, which is the strong dominant/powerful look that I would hope for
Yamcha didnt do spirit bomb I’m afraid. Yamcha’s move was I think called Spirit Ball or something like that and it involved him throwing an energy ball at the oppenent that kept on coming back to hit the oppenent.
Well on acount of that he learned it from king kai and used it on oozaru vegeta and yamcha did spirit ball

All im saying is people are saying goku will go to king kais, vegeta will turn oozaru and gohan will be in the next movie. I dont think any of these things will be in the next movie.

I feel sorry for the fans,that they know what a spirit bomb is and who uses it in the Manga.I won;t see any difference because i was never a full blown fan of the anime.It will just be kickass special effects and Martial arts mid air fughting for me.Nothing more nothing less.However i know that goku is a goof.I;ve seen a couple of episodes and he is such a losty./? Heheh.I’m so glad i;ll soon be able to relate with you guys in 2 months time.I don;t want to watch the anime properly until i’ve seen the movie.

I don’t think they will make that many changes in the next movie. I mean they have to have oozaru vegeta and they should have gohan

goku uses it and yamcha uses a very simular attack also…But I think he is refering to and attack of spiritual energy as apossed to the technique the spirit bomb.
@cj thong: Goku uses the Spirit Bomb, he learned it from King Kai in the anime. You must be pure of heart to use it!
They spirit bomb is all the energy from nature n living things gathered in one massive ball of energy

Gohan should not be in the next movie. He does not contribute to the story at all (based on up to and including frieza sage). It would be bad movie making to put him in the movie. It would also be bad to put oozaru vegeta in. It would be the same as having mary jane kidnapped at the end of every movie. If oozaru appears in this movie then he shouldnt appear in the next for fear of repetition.
Im sorry to those expecting these things but from making a movie piont of view they simply wont be put in unless they change the story to make those roals tie in more. They cant put anime filler into a movie.
