Akira Toriyama Comments on Evolution

February 8th, 2009 Leave a comment Go to comments

Before the newest Japanese trailer for Dragonball: Evolution, Dragonball’s creator Akira Toriyama left a message that expressed his thoughts on the film. ANN translates:

As the original creator, I had a feeling of “Huh?” upon seeing the screenplay and the character designs, but the director, all the actors, the staff, and the rest are nothing but “ultra” high-caliber people. Maybe the right way for me and all the fans to appreciate it is as a New Dragonball of a different dimension. Perhaps, this might become a great masterpiece of power! Hey, I look forward to it!!

I believe that we are all dragonball fans, in various degres of course, but still fans.Anything new that comes out about this, in my opinion, best anime series ever, is a gift from above. So let’s all go see it hope there is a second ne and that its a learning process. :) And for Akira well he has not had control over his master peace for over 10 years so it is no wonder. He created something iconic, something that reveals the fighting spirit in all of us and now the movie industry us truing to bring that back with a new look. Finaly haters and lovers are alike… we will all go see it ;)

I get the feeling that his comment of “It isn’t like the series you love, but, it can be good for what it is, too!” is a way of disassociating himself with the production while still saying something positive, much to the benefit of the producer’s wallets.

  5. February 11th, 2009 at 22:57 | #5

He is cool becouse he cant do nothing about it, its like the DBGT thing, he drop the series at the end of majin bu saga becouse he was tired and he wanted to ended that way, but the owners of the name and licence of DB made DBGT anyway (a anime that the only good things was the ss4 and the intro), so now, the owners of DB sell the licence again and akyra just have to sit down and watch, obiously whit his good cash in hand.

But like he said, this could be entertaining, its like RE, i enjoy the third movie because, since part 2, i start to ignoring that has the name of RE, and watched like a entertaining “Churro” (churro means a bad and ridiculous) movie.

A new dimension might be cool and all, like how the first issue of Naruto was lame and he came up with the dimension that Naruto is today (which has a lot of fans), but I want my old dimension. Oh well.

Well, I keep reading all of these comments that say “Well, looks like the creator is on their side!” and I have to say that you’re wrong. What a person does in the eye of the public is different behind closed doors. Think of it like politics. I’d bet he’s upset because his creation has been destroyed but what can he say? “Stupid Americans WTF is wrong with you?” Toriyama has high hopes? No. I don’t think so. Nothing I see in the trailer leaves me in anticipation for this movie, and I love all things DB and DBZ. A different dimension? Sure, I’d be okay with that if Goku had the same personality, wasn’t fighting thugs he’d destroy with his finger, and there were no Seven Mystics. Ever heard of Kami? Fox has a knack for ruining adaptations. Good luck to all of you who expect great things from this movie. I hope I’m wrong, but at the same time I wont get my hopes up. :|

  9. February 14th, 2009 at 03:34 | #9

@Jesse: Yeah we’ve all heard of Kami but before he came into the picture they all had different stories of how the dragon balls came to be and the story in the movie is fine….and how do you you know Goku doesn’t have the same personality? because of of what you heard in the trailer? all we heard him say was two lines and from that you can tell me you know how he’s gonna act through out the whole movie? I’m sorry but that is just complete and utter bullshit and you think like all the haters(I’m not calling you one) do when it comes to that subject…..and you can’t blame FOX(I do not work for them so don’t think that I do when I say this) for messing up adaptations they just buy the rights and fund the projects if anything you should blame the directors for taking to much liberties with the project…..wait let me rephrase that last part this is their vision of the project and how they view it so if you think they have bad vision fine that is your opinion but don’t say they messed it up because you just can’t please everyone and besides it’s not like the Dragon ball franchise is gonna be destroyed because of this movie it’s still gonna be around and no one can take that away from us.

i dont like that it is set in the present day, also, if it turns out to be a rubbish movie(which im sure and hope it will not be)there may be no sequels so we may never get to see the legendary super saiyan, unless they hav decided to get rid of that aswell, but on the otherhand, if the original creator believes it will be succesful then i do not hav to many doubts about it
    Cant wait till it’s out

One thing im sure you’ll all agree wiv though

    Piccolo looks crap

  12. Who Cares?
    February 16th, 2009 at 05:20 | #12

Who cares if it will be terrible or not? How will you know? To know you’d have to see it. Besides Akira got the idea of Dragonball from an older Japanese tale called “Monkey” so he really just made that story his own and built upon that, and in doing so he made one of the best animes ever. I personally chose not to see this movie as this hype sounds familiar… anyone remember The Rock’s unforgetably horrid performance in “Doom”? (Wasting perfectly good BFG rounds on a wall after telling your opponent you’ve got one round is a crime…) Anyway most people have forgotten and that is the lesson to be learned: If it is terrible: You probably won’t ever hear about it again… Making a big deal about how Akira just wants to make money or saying haters aren’t fans…. is pointless. We’ll see what happens…

  13. February 16th, 2009 at 19:02 | #13

omg take that u haters i guess yall haters are not db fans yall should be proud that we get to see a movie that millions of fans ever wanted,i bless the lord that we get a dragonball movie in our era, thank god im alive,by the way akira toriyama rules, naruto sucks

Hmmm, if thew creator himself could accept it as a NEW ANGLE for a MODERN GENERATION, I don’t see why we should condemn this movie just yet. Give it a chance 1st and then be the judge. As they say, dont judge a book by its cover. So I believe in the words of Akira himself “New Dragonball from a Different Dimension”. Let’s give it a chance, just be thankful Joel Schumacher is not the director otherwise he would have REALLY SCREWED UP BIG TIME like in Batman Forever & Batman & Robin. Hmmm…come to think of it…what would this be like if Peter Jackson & Michael Bay called the shots? interesting thought. :-)

    February 16th, 2009 at 22:27 | #15

He might be just modest but somehow I don’t think so, either way what he said is pretty much how I feel about the movie, it’s a new thing, it pissed me off originally that it looks like very little material from the anime/manga hasn’t been kept in check but I look forward to it now. There is no point in discussing how crap or good this movie is until it comes out.

  16. February 17th, 2009 at 21:56 | #16

His comment was likely just being polite. I could be wrong… but I doubt it.

This movie might be not completely horrible if it weren’t called dragonball… Then it could be just another effects movie with a shitty story, and bad character design. But it is called dragonball, and so I have the lowest of hopes. I will see it (not in theators, or anything that involves paying money), but only for the same reason people look at roadkill.

That said, I hope it will be a good movie. But hell, my hope couldn’t save this movie. I think the only thing that could save this movie now would be if somehow FOX were wiped off the face of the earth. And I wouldn’t mind that in the slightest.

You can’t shine a turd, but you can cover a great TV show with sh*t and call it a movie.

I’ll give it a chance, but there is no way in hell FOX is ever getting any more of my money.

  17. February 18th, 2009 at 01:04 | #17

@WACOMalt: why do guys blame fox for everything?

  18. Kingbreaker
    February 19th, 2009 at 10:28 | #18

I dont think Toriyama is not supporting the movie. Hes only being polite since there is little he can do about it… the only option left is to see it with open eyes…

This is not the first time America fails in doing a Japanese creation (Godzilla, Biohazard…) but hopefully it’ll be the last…

  19. Asd
    February 22nd, 2009 at 07:04 | #19

It clearly shows that he is just being polite and doesn’t want to go “Screw you, your movie sucks, now don’t embarrass my story and gtfo”

This sentence clearly proves that the story they made is not even related to the story that Toriyama made “Maybe the right way for me and all the fans to appreciate it is as a New Dragonball of a different dimension.”

Different dimension Dragonball…,so all this movie has got is names of Dragon Ball characters and a Title Dragon Ball Evolution, that’s all there is to it,and yes like someone said, they had to pay Toriyama for the License,so of course after getting paid he won’t say what’s on his heart.

    February 24th, 2009 at 09:14 | #20

Hey, I think a lot of you guys are only hearing what you want to hear. Toriyama didn’t say he loved what he has seen of the movie. He said his original reaction was, “Huh?” That isn’t approval. That’s disbelief. By saying he’s looking forward to it, he’s saying it might be cool and like Goku, trying to see the best in it, despite its OBVIOUS shortcomings which is why (I’ll say it again) his initial reaction was “Huh?” As a fan of DB and DBZ, I have to say this movie looks like bullshit and I don’t share Akira’s enthusiasm even if you are imagining it as an alternate reality version. Akira… you’re too nice sometimes to the point of it being silly, just like Goku. I have to take Vegita’s approach on this one… THIS MOVIE IS A DISGRACE! EVERYONE INVOLVED SHOULD BE FOUND AND DESTROYED!

    February 24th, 2009 at 20:54 | #21

    @yo
I agree, I believe a lot of folks are hearing what they want to see. Really, in support of the love of all DB, I am a bit disgusted with the movie. The makeup artists did a poor job on characters which have distinct trademarks: piccolo with antennae, Bulma with blue hair, Krillin being in existence. If some folks are excited for a ‘new dragonball movie’ thats great, but there should be distinct characteristics that make it a DB movie other than 3-4 characters which semi-match, and the same title. The different dimension viewpoint is optimistic, but seriously, if they just wanted to make a movie with so many OFF points, they should have just made a rip off-as in a whole different movie, but with cool effects. The similarities are very few and far between. Its disappointing that they warped a storyline that has so many fans who love the characters and storyline, the ‘huh’ is really “Oh, my storyline and characters which spawned one of the biggest fan-doms of animes or series in our world aren’t good enough? Oh, okay, well I guess you know whats right, after all I’m just the animation guy-real world stuff is obviously beyond Me!”
That’s sickening. The problem here is oblivious thinkers about what makes Dragon Ball -Dragon Ball. Its not the name, its the story with all the characters. Goku is not the next karate kid surviving high school, he is the bad ass alien with a good heart.
This is a poor response to years of fans desiring the perfect movie adaptation to the big screen.

because where not dumb and ovbious that hes not really cool with it, hes just saying that shit because hes making money off it and it would look extremly bad him not too… he pretty much just politly said… the movie looks nothing like my series…”huh?”… so that is why the haters cant stop , plus even if he really was cool with it… its not dragonball , how can you even accept this piece of shit ? imma go watch it to laugh my ass off … buy a ticket for a different movie though bc i aitn supporting this crap. i dont know how much of the series you have seen but i suggest if you wanna watch more dragon ball.. watch the WHOLE series or the actual cartoon dragonball movies, thats where its at ! Hi people. Sorry if my English is not the best :P lol
Well…I think everyone has the right to express an opinion. I read some comments from “haters” and really…they are just expressing their opinions OK? they didn’t seem haters to me…just disappointed people. Of course, insulting is a thing that we all should avoid…and a lot of DB fans are insulting the ones who are disappointed with the movie. I am disappointed too. I don’t know what happened but maybe they were all drunk when they were choosing the main character…I mean…please……..It’s really bad…even Will Smith would be a better Goku. When I saw the trailer I had the same reaction: Huh?!
I didn’t “fall in love” with the movie at all, I felt like they didn’t honored the Akira Toryama’s work. Anyway…I’m going to watch the movie so that I can prove to me that I judged it too quick. I definitely want to appreciate it cause I’m damn disappointed…gosh…I don’t like Chat Baldwin…he’s such a bad actor… :? Chow Yun-Fat is such a great actor but for the master Roshi caracter…ssssssss… :( really bad…
Bye to everyone and stop with the insults and bad words OK? there’s a lot of kids searching for Dragon Ball Evolution 8O

“Maybe the right way for me and all the fans to appreciate it is as a New Dragonball of a different dimension”

Sorry, but to all the guys who can’t read between the lines

‘Maybe the right way for me and all the fans to appreciate it is as a New Dragonball of a different dimension’

He is CLEARLY not enthusiastic for it, he’s being polite, otherwise he wouldn’t have said that. If he was interested he’d be completely optimistic but even for the creator to have doubts means that this movie is gonna be bad. Just watch, it’ll be a stinker. He’s being like James Cameron, his Terminator series were destroyed by the idiots who made Terminator 3, will continue to be with T4.

Listen folks, the haters of this movie are just as big a fan as the lovers of the movie. I saw the screenplay (bout a good 20 min), hated it. Is that wrong? no, it’s my damn opinion. Just like it’s my opinion that I agree with L above me, just like I would say that you guys are going to be in for a very sad surprise when this movie DOES come out and your friends will look at you funny for taking them to watch this. Good luck trying to convince the world that this movie is epic. It’s not. It’s another film that someone saw the original story line and said, “Hey I will make it different because I think it’ll look better my way and I have to make this all fit into under two hours on a low budget.”

    A. Goku is not an American white kid with an .
    B. He didn’t just “have” martial arts, he “trained” in it. He looked for challenges and overcame them. He’s not Spiderman who “mystically” realized his powers.
    C. He didn’t go to school. Wonder why the movie has him at school anyway? Note: They have him acting nerdy like Spiderman as well. hmm.
    D. The world was filled with dinosaurs and futuristic technology. Do you really see that in this film? NO.

Akira, I know you’re happy with all the money you made from this series. These so called “directors” committed murder to your wonder land that once made me a very happy fan.

Am I wrong or Toriyama said especifically (with nice nipon irony, of course) that the movie is something too different to his vision? I what I understand for what he says… “Huh”? “Different dimension”? That means all is wrong, man! F  ck that movie!

    Tori, we are with you!

    for both fans and non-fans:

    think before you act.
    think before you talk.
think before you state an opinion.
think before you post a comment.
    be smart, be intelligent.
    SOMETHING EXCESSIVE ISN’T GOOD.
don’t have the movie to lose your face here.
dbe MAY be a good movie.
dbe MAY be a bad movie.
i believe akira put faith in this movie,
(at least it showed on his great comment here, explicitly)
even it’s not between his line (implicit) on my own opinion.
coz a creator never abandon his/her creation(s), right?
just watch it and you’ll know it.
for me who have watched it, and as a DB & DBZ hugefans:
    i AM very disappointed,
but, still, i feel happy for this “new” DB
i like akira toriyama’s legendary phenomenon creation
which i grew up with when i was child,
    DRAGON BALL. :P

I think it was spectacular the best movie ive ever seen. but sorry to say but i loved the gt series even more. i really hated the last episode #64 at the end. it made me cry every time i watch it. still to this day. I now that you quit makeing them because of your family but if you started makeing them again it would really mean alot to me and alot of other people. ive been to alot of sites on dragonball z and people loves the show and some people also died on the last episode. but think about it if you u have time to make 5 movies like dragonball evelotion you can make more series of dragonball gt z or anythng. so if if your not to busy or any thing please make more dragonball gt. and if u can email me id love to talk to u. and thank u Akira Toriyama, for even thought u might not make new dragonball gt episode just for make them in the first place. it really is my favorite show movie and games ever made about it in dragonball dragonball z or dragonball gt in history.

Akira Toriyama said this before he saw the film, haven’t found anything about his opinion after seeing it yet, but I’ll tell you what it must feel like when Fox wants to make money off of your honest hard work.
