Dragonball: Evolution made it on Entertainment Weekly’s “Top 17 Movies We Can’t Wait to See” list for Spring 2009.

DRAGONBALL: EVOLUTION
April 8, 2009

Starring: Emmy Rossum, Chow Yun-Fat
Directed by: James Wong

Not sure what (or who) a Dragonball is? You might have missed the cult manga comics that have already spawned hit animated TV shows in the U.S. and Japan. But this live-action adaptation — about a group of warriors protecting Earth from an evil force — should catch you up.

    @Rockman

    Not only Akira said that, the director said from the fking start that this is a new dragonball, set in an universe more close to our world… with the realistic stuff that is. So tell me… how can a movie be bad…while it is exactly what it is supposed to be?

  2. March 3rd, 2009 at 01:12 | #2

    @Gohan: what are you talking about exactly?

  3. March 3rd, 2009 at 01:45 | #3

    We all know the gravity of this film and most of us realize this but everyone should know that Dragonball Evolution is only 17th because of miniscule to zero promotion here in the United States. The ranking is based off of USA so that explains it.

    @ TomasEpson

    Eh, in my time here, I’ve come to note that many of you seem to have developed a very disturbing, almost cult-like reverence for the film, and that you’ll heap loads of abuse on anyone who doesn’t feel the same way about it that you do. Oh I’m sure that some of these folks are just out to get a rise outta you, but you’ve lumped everyone with an unflattering opinion about the flick into the “haters” group, and that’s ridiculous. It says a lot about your mindset that you’d paint everyone who holds a negative opinion about this film with the same broad stroke.

    And that’s the problem in a nutshell. You guys are so involved in your Dragonball Evolution love-fest that you act very childish to anyone who says anything negative about your beloved flick. And frankly, I don’t find that sort of behavior to be any easier to stomach than that of the so-called “haters”. In fact I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that in my time here, the stuff that you folks do in the name of fandom has done more to put me off to this movie than any “hater” possibly could. All the name-calling, all the ravenous deconstruction of people’s opinions; I would almost be inclined to skip the movie just to avoid being associated with that sort of petty childishness.

    I’d love to see you guys take the high road. If you think the so-called “haters” are just here to crap on your parade, then ignore them. Or barring the ability to do that, don’t resort to name-calling. It’s not a question of whether or not they deserve it, but that in sinking to that level, you’re doing more harm than good. And besides, you’d be surprised how effective civilized discussion is next to acting like a toolbox just because someone doesn’t like a movie as much as you do.

    I think one of things that may cause some of you heartattacks in the future, is the misunderstanding felt followed by anger and jealousy, when something is misread.

    That is a picture slider containing 17 photos from 17 films EW is wanting to “check out”. It’s not in any particular stature, or with one having a greater value to EW than the other.

    Obviously, however, there is no denying Dragonball’s popularity. Among the 17 films posted, Dragonball seems to have triple the size of discussion over the other films.

    It always seems to be a popular topic, and now that’s finally moved off of the animated setting and into live-action, you would think that it is a great time for America and Hollywood to give the classic creation equal promotion and publicity as past super hero comic adaptations of similar budget, but I guess what’s seen so far, is catering to fans(Online), with things like “Can You KameHame Ha?”, and very minimal trailer debuting to a strange demographic, albeit there is seemingly overwhelming amount of promotion outside of the U.S. going on. C’mon America, you’ll publicize a video on YouTube garnering 1,000,000 views in 10 days, but you won’t cover a story on how phenomenally popular the Dragonball Evolution trailer became on YouTube, gaining 1,500,000+ in 1 1/2 days and sparking a huge controversy.

    Let’s hope they start showing more respect to things that are “actually” controversial and popular, like religion, and not exhausting truth about Brad Pitt and Angie’s inbred child conceived from a Malaysian orgy. :roll:

    ROFLMAO

    None of you know me, I do have a life, I have a job, I study, have many friends and have a lovely girlfriend. I don’t sit in front if my computer waiting for every possible update on this awful movie. Funny how some of you are doing exactly what you think is so horrible, you are hating me without even knowing me. Some of you are hating Hannah Montana the movie, well have you seen it? how can you know you hate it unless you see it first? have you even seen a trailer? And no, I’m not immature I have seen many movies and won’t pay to get fed the same trash slapped into a franchise I grew up with.

    As for what I’m doing here? I just had to comment after most of you got so excited after seeing EW rated DBE as number 14 out of 17 movies they want to see in SPRING. Now i’m just laughing at how biassed your arguments sound and how troubled all of you are since you can’t handle a different opinion to your own and attack me.

    I know I’ll hate Hannah Montana the movie, and don’t need to see anything to know it, I hoped I would love DB (yes before it was DBE) but everything I see is just terrible. Not only that but you talk about sequels? Goku is in highschool, he has to graduate since there can’t be a highschool drop-out hero so expect DB graduation if this is a box office hit, Chichi and Goku can’t have children (since it will promote teen pregnancies) so forget Gohan, and there’s no RR army so forget the androids and Cell.

    And if the moderator wants to ban me, he’s more than welcome, so far I haven’t attacked any of you (unlike some of you have, but namecalling is accepted as long as it’s proDBE) I’m just stating my opinions. I know my life won’t end if I can’t visit one DB news site.

    @RJ, so you are judging the whole movie from one cut up fight that was shown on horrible quality in youtube? you are really setting yourself up for a huge dissapointment and yes 87eleven has some great stunt work, but you can’t do much with people that have never done martial arts before. As for why I think Hannah Montana has been done with more care, when you see pink skin on piccolo’s arm in the trailer, it shows how messy and careless they have been. Keep believing that this is the DB world, cloning? (wasn’t there until cell), laser guns?, magic potions?, I forgot it’s more modern, so they just raided the GiJoe armory to have lasers, right?

    Guess we’ll get Weaver and Chichi’s friend from highschool in the sequel, I’m definitely not looking forward to that, so I do hope it flops big time.

    Lol, I never knew the dragon balls changed size, every picture they show with them they are a different size. And now Wong ripped of the hulk? that is just hillarious (Piccolo mad, Piccolo greener, Piccolo smash punny humans, ROFLMAO)

    As for Chow Yung Fat, I know it was a joke but that doesn’t take away the fact that he’s dettaching himself from the movie, when it flops he’ll just use it as an excuse.

    @tharlkidgoku, I said 26 movies in SPRING, as for Stephen Chow, you need to get news from many sources to get the bigger picture. Stephen chow did say that in an interview with apple daily, just that this site is biased so they just show the “good” news.

    here’s the info:

    Sina Entertainment
    According to “Apple Daily”, Hollywood live action movie “Dragonball Evolution” has already entered countdown for release. The movie had been anticipated by Asian moviegoers because it was based on a Japanese manga, produced by Stephen Chow, and starred by Chow Yun-Fat. However during the promotion in Taiwan and Korea no sign of Stephen Chow the producer was seen, only Yun-Fat was there to manage the scene. Some sources state that Stephen had repeatedly suggested revising the script, but they were all ignored, making him feel looked down upon and so refused to attend any promotion activities in protest.

    The Fox sponsored, Stephen Chow produced, James Wong directed, Chow Yun-Fat and Justin Chatwin starred manga live action movie “Dragonball” will start screening next month, and Yun-Fat has already began his Asian promotion tour, but no sign of Stephen the producer was seen. Some US sources state that when the film began shooting, Stephen already had conflicts with the filmakers, so he was very unhappy with them.

    Stephen is producer only in name and has no actually power, so he refused to do promotion

    It was said that after Fox bought the rights to the Japanese manga “Dragonball”, they had invited Stephen to be director, but he was busy with filming CJ7, so he only agreed to be producer, and Fox turned to James Wong to direct. At the start of filming, Stephen was really ethusiastic at the thought of cooperating with Yun-Fat, seen especially in his numerous suggestions to casting, scripting, make design and special effects during the planning. But these suggestions were all rejected by Fox executives, causing Stephen who enjoyed high prestige in the Hong Kong cinema industry to lose face. Since his first job as a Hollywood producer was only in name but has no actually power in decisions, Stephen decided no to attend any of the promotional activities for the movie in protest.

    Stephen admitted that his suggestions had not been accepted, and did not have an actual role

    A reported phoned Stephen to confirm, and he replied: “I am not able to attend the promotional activities because of the timing, and that promotion is not my job, so I already have other work scheduled”. Regarding the rumours of him being producer without actual decision powers, Stephen said: “A movie has many types of producer, and I was the kind of advisory type of producer. Except for giving a few suggestions, I did not have an actual role”. When asked if his suggestions were not accepted, he replied: “It’s true they did not accept my decisions. Maybe they thought those weren’t suitable, so they didn’t use them. They have their own reasons for not accepting, but I won’t mind, since it’s the movie company who makes the decisions”. When the matter of “Dragonball” author Toriyama Akira being dissatisfied that the movie isn’t true to the original story, Stephen said: “Sorry, no comment”.

    @CyberMonkey

    Listen dude, I don’t know who you think you are to say that to me. Do I care if they have a negative view towards this film? haha, not in the slightest chance, I don’t even care about what you think of me.

    Everyone has the right to their own opinion

    But what bothers me is all these people, and yes I’ll call them haters cause the damn movie hasn’t even come out, try to force the views on and influence other people. Is that justified? As they clearly do not have, in the slightest bit, any informed views on this movies. I’m not the one who goes on the net and makes it my mission to ensure this film fails just because I believe so. I’m not the one who post thousands of videos on YouTube, saying this movie will be trash by supporting my arguments with nothing but fallicies. And clearly this site was not made for those purposes. It was made to post the correct and relevant information on the movie to the people who are actually looking forward to this. And somehow, the “so-called” haters make their way onto this site just to try and shove their views down our throats. Please tell me that if you were in our positions, that their behaviour would not, in slightest bit, tick you off? We don’t visit this page for that. You accuse me of name-calling and what do you think we get called just because we’re looking forward to the movie.

    Yeah I really like Dragonball. I loved watching it, Z and GT when I was younger. So tell me, is it wrong for me, and others, to want this movie, based on the anime that we enjoyed, to be successful; and to shun the negative preconceptions and prejudices againt a film that hasn’t even been released? So tell me? Are you the one now who’s taking “a moral high ground?” I find that hard to believe with your elitist attitude

    @Dblaze

    Get life dude, seriously. If YOU are a DB fan you would support this movie, its Dragonball in a new form (I don’t know why thats an issue for some people, or maybe you just can’t accept change – I wonder what your life must be like) but its Dragonball none-the-less. If you are DB fan you would atleast be neutral towards it until it comes out

    @Rockman

    Yo man have you read the latest reviews for “Watchmen.” Critics and fans alike don’t think its a great movie. I’ll just want to quote some out of an article from Richard Corliss of Time Magazine, a self-proclaimed die hard fan of Watchmen: “The best and worst thing to say about the Watchmen film is that, if you read the book, the movie you made in your head probably looked a lot like this.” In the article he clearly criticizes the film for being to close to the original comic, which does not translate well into live action. He even describes the film as having popcorn breaks.

    Just because Steven Chow apparently didn’t have an active role in the production does not mean this movie will suck. Sure, his previous works were very good, but there was a reason why his suggestions were overlooked, we all can’t be at top form all the time, its not humanly possible. Maybe his suggestions were to close to the anime and maybe Wong and the others didn’t think that would translate well into live action. Changes were neccessary, thats why its called an “adaptation”

  38. SaurabhBenjamin
    March 9th, 2009 at 22:37 | #38

    ..why does Goku’s character have ‘attitude’ in the movie…his character is supposed to be dumb and naive and inquisitive, ready for action, compassionate, sweet…willing to die for loved ones…but now he is portrayed as a know-how stud in the movie…murdered the Goku character. I ask what good is an adaptation if it isn’t close to the manga or cartoons …appearance of Goku’s character is all okay..but his comic feel isn’t there..its missing the original Goku feel….i feel like crying…

    I just finished watching the movie. It came out earlier here in Asia, and I’ve got to say, people who watched the movie or read the manga, I warn you, you will absolutely HATE and DETEST the movie. I mean, the story is just based upon Dragonball, but it won’t follow any plot from it. But, for those who haven’t read the manga or seen the show, it’ll be quite enjoyabl, but don’t take my word for it. Lovers, just prepare to be dissapointed. Especially since they COMPLETELY leave out Krillin :(

    But seriously, all of those who are super excited, that’s just awesome, I’m glad you will find the movie great. But, I will say that the movie is really, and I mean, UTTERLY based on Dragonball, but it doesn’t mean it is Dragonball. I mean, for example, the guys name IS Goku, but it doesn’t mean that he IS Goku from the series. Like SaurahbBenjamin said <>, Goku ISN’T Goku at all… And then the whole direction of the movie just sucked. There were ALL these random encounters, from Piccolo’s minions, to the first encounter of Yamcha, to the final battle with Piccolo ! As a movie fan, you will not at 100% connect with any scene in this movie (except for the scene where certain people die ;) ). I have to admit, however, that the CGI and action scenes weren’t half bad. Pretty cool to see what attempt the director had to produce ki waves in live action form. Some were like, AWESOME, but some ki waves (like the Kamehame wave) just felt really lazily worked on…

    (Spoiler now)
    On a finishing note, I have to say that Goku DOES sorta apply the Dragon Fist on Piccolo, but Piccolo lives in the end, meaning there WILL BE A SEQUEL people. To my dismay, I don’t want it to be shown. Iy’s going to confuse people about the DB universe.
