    the info was that dbz and db came on in 1996 and was shopped around at diff stations but came on in most places at 5,6,7 in the morning which killed it then toonami picked it up in 98 and saved it.

    @DPA:
    I don’t want to go too deep into the term ADAPTATION is, but simply you take an idea/story/concept and you modify it in such that it’s:

    1. supplies the viewer with original/new/modified information
    2. does not deviate too much from the original source
    3. share a commonality between the new form and the original form.

    This is how you know if something is successfully adapted or not: Try to take away bits of pieces from this DBE movie and see if you can still recognize it as dragonball. Personally, I think he did a fine job (judging from the clips). The story is being retold in a different way, but the message carried remains the same.

    As fans, we all have many visions of a DB movie. It’s impossible to satisfy 100% of the audience. Even LOTR, as successfull as it was, many ppl were left upset b/c a character from the novel was completely removed from the movie. Anyways, go watch the movie and have a great time, it will make you walk out from the theatre possibly believing you can do a kamehameha someday lol.

    peace,

    dbzrude, if you could send me the link, I’d appreciate it:

    mh_ch_sh@yahoo.com

    Watching the movie now, doesn’t mean I won’t go watch it 30-something times in the theatre, I’m in full support of it either way.

    I wouldn’t worry about the yahoo japan rating. That has as much credence as the yahoo america rating system.

    My ratings for the DB series are:

    DB = 9.5/10
    DBZ = 9/10
    DBGT = 5.5/10

    The only reason GT passed was because some of the fights were good, story went totally out the window.

    DB series get s a higher score because I think Im a sucker for origin stories, no one had to power up forw hile in most of the fights (the longest was like 2 -3 minutes with piccolo jr I believe). I watched DB after Z, when I was around 8-10 (96-98), all subtitled. Had watched the edited eps of Dragon Ball first (13) then the first two edited sagas of DBZ (Saiyan and Namek), decided to watch the rest online even if they were subtitled.

    Then eventually I watched all the eps in english as well, and watched the gt eps subtitled.

    But ya DB was better for me, cause it was funny, has cool fights (less disappering more fighting), cool training, character development/introduction, the fillers werent that bad and made enough sense that a person who hasnt read the manga wouldnt think these things stood out from the main series and also didnt provide big contradictions.

    DBZ on the other hand had many fillers which contradicted what they had said before in the series or later, not making any sense (DBKai should fix that from what I’ve read about it), but still had really nice action scenes/story/ less but still some character development compared to DB, some funny parts. Another downside were the long powerups.

    DBGT, ugh.. dont get me started let’s just say most of the important stuff I listed was thrown down the drain. The fighting scenes were the redeeming feature, they tried on their part to have a good mix between funny moments and action, but ya they just couldnt pull it off imo, it still passes meaning any db fan should go through it at least once.

    As for my thoughts on this movie, I think it’ll turn out decent if not good, Im not thinking of it as the anime brought to life, Im thinking of it taking place in an alternate universe, they seem to be staying true to many of the character traits which is something the chun-li movie didnt do at all except for maybe for one character which was Gen.

    @bababui:

    dude your an idiot. dragonball around that time was not all about tournaments. it didnt really get there till the tien saga. dude we are all db fans, honestly if you think about it we wouldnt be or even know about this site if we were, none the less commenting on it all the time.

    Dragonball was more story than action
    dragonball z was more action the story
    and gt was just off in my opinion but it was a mixture of both.

    you really need to get your facts straight and re-watch dragonball
    we are all dragonball fans and thats that. stop callin people non-fans just because we support this movie. no it isnt gonna be the greatest movie ever but im sure its going to be a good one.

    again dude re-watch dragonball, it was alot more story then action. it starts off with pretty much training, meeting all the main characters even through tournaments.

    im a dragonball fan, have been since i was a kid, im 20 now and i’ll never turn my back on dragonball.

    the magic begins though was really really sad i have to say lol.

    @stephen:

    nevermind you got no clue what your talking about, there is dragon ball was all about fighting just like dbz, if anything z had more story telling idiot, ur just been exposed… i mean just in the freezer saga they spent a few episodes talking about sayians pasts and stuff, dragon ball was all about find the balls fight off the guys, fight in tournaments, fight tao,fight the rr army,fight piccolo,fight majumia,

    so dont try to pull off this shit dragon ball has alot of fighting and tons of training ( funnest part too)

    if u see it at the end of the day theres alot more story telling in z but i like the whole dragon ball story better as whole..

    i watched dragon ball over 6 times the whole thing back in the day when they were waiting to air z…
    go back to your youtube watching videos man

    so those anyone know why theres gotta be a dance with the poem gohan told goku to tell roshi??? theres also a wierd dance when goku calls shenlong….. its fucking weird and very annoying…

    but yeah master roshi and bulma do a great job in the movie…. u can tell goku comes awskward to justin, or the script is just garbage, but i told you guys justin is not the type of actor that you require to do a goku, but then again they do look alike but its hard to find someone that fits the bracket.

  23. bababui
    March 12th, 2009 at 16:31 | #23

    also did anyone find it weird how goku was asking bulma to go together??? it would of made much more sense if bulma asked goku that she would help him like int he carttoons…… i dont know man i would love to ask questions to whoever wrote the screen play………….. its kinna crazy that with having such a rich story like the dragon ball they needed to come up with such a weird adaptation that almost makes it awkward…. also wonder why they took shenlogs voice out… so much for the mystical universe of dragon ball, alos sucks that goku didnt have a training partner… i mean adding krillin in the movie would of been asome since they r like the 2 best friends and were trained both by roshi to compete in the martial arts tourney… also did i miss something or those roshi not live in an island…

  24. March 12th, 2009 at 16:53 | #24

    @YdotL:

    I know, but I think majority of people understand that an adaptation = changes, but, there`s a lot, unnecesary and the adaptation has not direction, adapted for what? for who?

    - Bringing new people? with low effects, cheesy fights?
    - Bringing millions of kids? with the main chracter being a teenager with a teenager life and problema at beginning?
    - Keeping fans` loyalty and happyness? … words are unnecesary.

  25. March 12th, 2009 at 17:01 | #25

    @dbdylan:

    Please. Batman fans didn´t love “batman and robin” because it was “BATMAN”.

    The most probabbly thing is that we must think about a reboot with another filmmakers. This movie is the sum of all of their mistakes (bad promotion, leaked scenes showing a white Piccolo and smoke blast, an infamous “I`M NOT READY FOR THIS”, a trailer showing a blue oozaru and then a red one, green blasts and then yellow blasts, cheap posters, and as a cherry on the ckae: a bad movie)

    now I know we are all nervous about the movie and we get a little jumpy when we hear someone in japan bashing the movie, but we have to expect this and I am saying right now be prepared for some negative reviews, this is db, its not the easiest thing you can make, there will be people that will bash it, every movie goes through this. finally if that yahoo japan thing got people nervous then just think about it this way they already paid for it :lol:

    DPA,
    i am aware you have no faith in this movie.
    now i am not one to say your not a dragonball fan because of your opinion.
    but seriously. shut up. your annoying, you have something wrong with you, because the FX look amazing. this site is for people who cant wait for this movie. or at least want to see it. you have no purpose here. and don’t try to turn this into a fight. i have seen you do it before.
    who cares what color the ki blasts are? a ki blast is a fucking ki blast.
    this movie will be fantastic. and i will stand by my word.
    if you aren’t interested in this movie you should leave. but knowing how you secretly are dying to see this movie, i wont tell you to leave.

    If anyone thinks that Dragonball will get a reboot if this movie bombs they’re out of their mind. Nobody is going to touch this franchise (in America at least) if this movie does poorly, the demand just isn’t there and the anime/manga is long past it’s prime. To be honest, I’m surprised this movie was made at all. Ten years ago maybe, but I think it’s a wonder that it was given a green light considering how dissatisfying most cartoon adaptation movies normally turn out. That, and despite it being one of the most well-known and beloved animes, only fans really know or care about Dragonball at all, and that’s a pebble in the pond when you’re trying to attract a wider audience to see a movie. I think DB: Evolution is what we’re getting, so I wouldn’t hold my breath for a retelling if this movie disappoints. The most I would hope for is that this movie does well enough so that a better sequel is made that learns from and avoids some of the mistakes of the first.

    As far as the Asian country reviews so far, well, I’ve seen Japanese live-action anime adaptations that took everything literally from the subject matter that still had low ratings and poor reviews. Wait until you see it to decide if it sucks or not, but don’t take someone else’s word for it. The Dark Knight came highly recommended from almost everywhere I turned and by the time I finally saw it I was kind of like, “So what? This is what everyone is freaking out over?” It wasn’t a bad movie either, it was actually pretty enjoyable, but the way people hyped it up made me think it was the greatest movie of the year and it certainly wasn’t. You know what they say about opinions though.

    March 12th, 2009 at 18:24 | #33

    @twilight

    I agree, in th end it really is the individuals opinion. when Twilight came out there was to much hype and I saw it and I thought it was boring as hell, the same goes for watchmen.

    What I am expecting from this movie is just fun, that all, I want to enjoy myself. I don’t care much for tdk dialogue, dragonball was never about that, sometimes a lot of people forget that. I see fight, a little comedy, non stop action, I think I will enjoy this.

    sorry guys i just saw the movie……….=[
    It was such a let down. For the guy who said its 100 minutes, noooo, it’s roughly around 80 something minutes at best. Picollo gets such little screen time! Chatwin was good,just not as goku.
    I went into this movie thinking that the movie was gonna be an awesome epic adventure!!
    truth is, Bulmas acting was weak,Yamcha had no point unfortunatley,and Mai was wasn’t necessary. CGI and special effects were good,but it wasn’t enough to save this movie. when your watching this you just don’t feel the dragonball vibe.I know some of you won’t believe me,but for those who do,you might want to lower your expectations.

    This movie just wasn’t good :cry:

    @Twilight: Many graphic novel / comic series only receive live adaptations until 15-20 years from their debut. This isn’t uncommon. Do you even know when the original X-Men, Spiderman, Superman, Iron-Man, Batman, etc. comic were written?

    Those American comics had material that was easier to write to live action.

    Dragonball needs to be done by a talented fan.

    Of course Dragonball will get a reboot if Evolution fails. One live failure only ignites the interest “to do better” in others.

    Why are you guys listening to Twilight? He doesn’t seen to understand the industry.

    @DISSAPOINTED: EXACLTY my point ”I went into this movie thinking that the movie was gonna be an awesome epic adventure!!” SEE what happens when you get hyped for something ? its NEVER good to be hyped for a movie, because even if the movie is just good, not the ”awesome epic adventure” you thought, you wont be able to enjoy it.

    The movie was ok-good, i told u people it wont be the best movie ever or the movie of the year, it’ll be a good movie and if u are a fan of DB it might be a special movie but that’s it, i expect EPIC from a 2nd or even a 3rd movie with SSJ.

    With true maturity, DPA and posters who dislike the (idea of the) movie keep coming back to tell more optimistic fans how much it will fail/is getting bad ratings/how everyone hates.

    That was sarcasm ( I hope you caught that).

    There’s this saying, it goes “If you don’t have anything nice to say- don’t say it”. It’s not like this movie is a truly serious issue. Its an adaptation of a longrunning cartoon, yes, but is it enough to cause repeated posts on how its bad/going to fail? If I didn’t like something to that point, I would just not come back and do something better with my time. Yet DPA and other “haters” seem to love coming here to post their negative thoughts and be all haughty when they anger other fans. Maybe they get a kick out of it, but seriously, the easiest way to deal with posters like DPA are to ignore his/her posts.

    :D

Its a fookin DB movie….what the hell….i have been waiting for this for a long ass time. I don’t think that people impression of db will be any different, the average movie goers don’t really care, all they see is a cartoon for children. a lot of us are forgetting that the people who don’t care much for db, or know anything about it are the one who will determine the success of this film. not haters ( who will never accept a db or dbz movie no matter who makes or who is in it), nor hardcore supporters. It like a presidential campaign you can’t just appeal to your base you have to go after the middle, the one who saw the trailer during paul blart and thought it was worth a look.
