Budget Revealed? And More Sequel Talk

March 30th, 2009 Leave a comment Go to comments

A newspaper in Chile ran an article on Dragonball: Evolution, and in it the budget of the movie was unveiled. According to the paper, the production budget was only 45 million, much less than the previous $100 million estimates. What this means is the film has already made about half its budget back in Asia alone.

There’s really no doubt now that the film will be profitable, and so sequels are a definite possibility. IGN spoke with Justin Chatwin (Goku) and James Marsters (Piccolo) who were incredibly enthusiastic about the idea… Marsters even wants 6 more films!

He went on: “All I know is I’ve been signed to three movies, but I would like to make five — seven of them. You could just pretty much paint by numbers using the wealth of source material to easily get the seven films. There’s that much there.”

Meanwhile, Chatwin is also obviously thinking about Dragonball as a series of movies, with the actor seeing Evolution as an introduction piece to the wider universe.
He said: “There’s a whole generation of kids waiting to be introduced to Dragonball, so this first movie is really important for that. I mean the main plot is the battle between Piccolo and Goku, but this first film still serves to introduce the characters and where they’re from and what they’re deals are. And so to cover that ground really takes up most of the first movie.”

He goes on: “I know what they have in store for the second one and it’s really cool! It’s more in the vein of the Dragonball saga… it goes into other places, there’s other characters, other fighters and there’s a lot of action that is just really awesome.

“It actually goes more into Dragon Ball Z land and it’s just really exciting. It goes into the whole legend of Dragonball. I cant really say more than that, but it made me think this is a cool franchise to be a part off because there’s so much we haven’t shown yet.”

    I feel different things
I’m happy on how, with only 45milion, they did ALL of that, it’s really amazing and also i’m really happy that, if the information is true, hell yes we are getting a sequel for SURE.
But i’m also sad that they didnt trust too much on DB, i mean dont get me wrong, i thought the movie looked fine but it sure didnt look like a 100milion movie, i was hoping they went all in with it, risking like with TDK/Watchmen/Superman returns/Spiderman, going 100 – 200 milion, i truely hope they go for it this time, in a sequel.

Can you imagine what they can do with 100-150 milion ?
No wonder the movie is so fast (90 minutes), it would either be big runtime and crap effect or short runtime and awesome (as it is) effects, which i perfer, of course i rather both good effects and 2h+ ^^.

BTW, I think the information is true since they did too with 300, Production Budget: $65 million, http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=300.htm, and it did look amazing, like DBE does .

wow that explains alot. i mean the effects look good and all but if they did spend 100 million they should’ve looked better. There will be a sequel. It already made almost half the budget in Asia. I can’t wait for this movie to come out and the sequel will be awesome to

ohhh man thats great news for only 45 mil the special effects look good enough. That would also explain the short run time. So this movie should definatley make a large profit, But why go from 100 mil to only 45???

  11. March 30th, 2009 at 17:19 | #11

Chatwin says “I can’t say more than that…”

I think it looks amazing for a 45 milion movie, 300’s budget worth 65 milion and looked amazing too so its not that wrong, what was wrong was having 100 milion on a 1h a 20 minutes movie, that was the weird thing.

I just truely hope they go all in with the next one, come on its DBZ, its Vegeta’s/gohan’s introduction, give us an one milion budgetd movie

  23. Adam
    March 30th, 2009 at 17:48 | #23

I personally think this was a very smart move: Want to garauntee a sequal? Lower the actual budget and you’ll more than likely make twice that amount, very impressive Fox.

    March 30th, 2009 at 17:50 | #24

Sequel, awesome. I can NOT wait to see what they do with Vegeta. If they don’t cast him right, all will be lost, for I will go into a rage that will destroy the Earth.

  25. March 30th, 2009 at 17:52 | #25

    wow 6 sequals??
how old is goku going to be in the 6th movie? like 50 lol
and what about bulma, she’ll be old as hell
and wat about roshi, he’ll prolly get older,
they will probolly get some new actors for the later sequals cuz these actors will get older by then

  26. March 30th, 2009 at 17:56 | #26

The movie it’s a scam. They are making a fool of everyone, the investors first and the viewers then. Investors should sue FOX and producers of that thing for what they did. This is not business, this is a fraud.

  28. Piccolo Fan
    March 30th, 2009 at 17:58 | #28

Personally eventhough I like DBZ I wish that they will finish off dragonball with the Piccolo Jr. saga. It will bring more characters into the mix with the tournament like Krilliin/Tien/Chaotsu and Goku training on Kami’s lookout, will explian why/how Piccolo is alive (to people who never watched the series), Goku and Chi-Chi’s wedding (explains Gohan), all of which that will tie up all the loose ends before they get into DBZ. Since if they go directly to DBZ many people who don’t know the series (like me trying to watch Lord of the Rings)

@Adam: i wanna know about the runtime too, hope its not 80 minutes   , hope its 100 minutes or more  8)

  34. March 30th, 2009 at 18:15 | #34

I wouldnt trust that $45 million. I dont think that is right. I knew there was going to be a sequel from the start and confirming it is great news. You CANT just leave the Dragonball series at 1 movie!

  35. mr.maestoso
    March 30th, 2009 at 18:18 | #35

at least they did most of the movie beFORE the economy went to shit. they probably would have canceled the movie altogether. who knows. maybe hey had 100mil, and then fox decided to cut down on the budget.

    i’m just rambling now.

I think that it is great new obviously fox isnt daunted like revolution was after hellboy 1 when they said that “their is a 98% chance their WONT be a sequel” and I was like aww BTW I was banned from Anime News Network less then a week after I joined for picking a fight with a mod and burning them so they banned me and when I told the webmaster He was all like no that wouldnt happen and I sent him the link to what his mod said and am waiting a response… I pwned them

    March 30th, 2009 at 18:50 | #37

well i m not sure if i m happy or not…… if our source is correct there gonna be definately a sequel! but the budget is kinda small, maybe fox wasn t relied on dbe? i don t know, maybe in the following days we all gonna know. but still if it s budget is 100$ this film was doomed to be successful cause the db franchise is great…. dbe ftw!

  38. March 30th, 2009 at 18:52 | #38

well this is a relief.. only 45 million…. It’s a relief because if that’s all they were able to do with 100 million, i’d shoot myself… lol… but then again it kind of proves they had no faith in this movie from the get go… The budget SHOULD have been 100 million and maybe the fight scenes would be better…

  39. March 30th, 2009 at 18:53 | #39

sequel! Also btw i saw an interview with Emmy and Justin. It was pretty cool.

i dont think the budget was just 45 million,, i wouldnt trust a chilean newspaper for that,, unless fox confirms it
it would be a joke if its true,, 45 million for a dragonball movie?? fox should get sued for disrespecting dragonball like that when we have movies with 200 million budget

    Hey,
I work at a theater and we have pamphlets for the coming soon films. I know the overseas version of the film was only 80mins long. This brochure is listing the US runtime of the film at 100mins. Didn’t know if anyone had said anything, but it’s so close to the release that it probably doesn’t matter.

Sigh, ust another lie the team behind this movie told everyone. Just proves how much “respect” they had for the franchise, and with 45 mill budget, I have seen way better movies and effects.

Anyway still bombing in Asia, lol, the theaters are dropping it like flies.

its like dragonball evolution all over again…back to just hoping that the sequel will do the series justice, won’t be mere hour and half, have better effects, ALL the characters we know and love, better story, etc.
One can only hope, but i’m not getting my hopes up too high after DBE.
hopefully the sequel WILL use 100 mill budget though – then the film could be longer, wont be so jumpy and confusing (to those who dont already know the story and characters) and the effects will be better.
And oh, btw, GET A NEW FIGHT CHOREOGRAPHER!
