Budget Revealed? And More Sequel Talk

March 30th, 2009 Leave a comment Go to comments

A newspaper in Chile ran an article on Dragonball: Evolution, and in it the budget of the movie was unveiled. According to the paper, the production budget was only 45 million, much less than the previous $100 million estimates. What this means is the film has already made about half its budget back in Asia alone.

There’s really no doubt now that the film will be profitable, and so sequels are a definite possibility. IGN spoke with Justin Chatwin (Goku) and James Marsters (Piccolo) who were incredibly enthusiastic about the idea… Marsters even wants 6 more films!

He went on: “All I know is I’ve been signed to three movies, but I would like to make five — seven of them. You could just pretty much paint by numbers using the wealth of source material to easily get the seven films. There’s that much there.”

Meanwhile, Chatwin is also obviously thinking about Dragonball as a series of movies, with the actor seeing Evolution as an introduction piece to the wider universe.
He said: “There’s a whole generation of kids waiting to be introduced to Dragonball, so this first movie is really important for that. I mean the main plot is the battle between Piccolo and Goku, but this first film still serves to introduce the characters and where they’re from and what they’re deals are. And so to cover that ground really takes up most of the first movie.”

He goes on: “I know what they have in store for the second one and it’s really cool! It’s more in the vein of the Dragonball saga… it goes into other places, there’s other characters, other fighters and there’s a lot of action that is just really awesome.

“It actually goes more into Dragon Ball Z land and it’s just really exciting. It goes into the whole legend of Dragonball. I cant really say more than that, but it made me think this is a cool franchise to be a part off because there’s so much we haven’t shown yet.”

Am I the only person in the world that can see that DB/DBZ needs to be made in 3D, as in similar to Final Fanatasy?!? That would be the best thing they could do.

I don’t understand you guys wanting a 3D movie , just watch the animation movie , what you expect a 3D movie to bring more ? I personally don’t see any interest about it !

dude there is a big difference between the path of power and to go with a more 3 d style with the same caracters of dragonball evolution like beowulf did
correct me if I’m wrong pls

    April 6th, 2009 at 09:10 | #9

and with that ,you can make it more godlike, it’s an epic manga and it has to translate to that or you won’t receive the 100% potential dragonball has

Beowulf the 3D movie sucked, it was nothing like the story. I hate the look of it and was really disappointed by it and happy I saw it on netflix and didn’t pay to see it in theaters.

Sure DBE doesn’t follow the story exactly, but it gets most of it and it is made by cutting how many episodes of DB? About 20 or so, not 100 percent sure. Yet Beowulf has to follow a story that is already perfectly set and they change Part 3 of the story and that ruined it for me. Plus Grendel looked like a Retarded Person which was horrible and he acted like a killing retard to. Sorry for the language, but Grendel I think was based off someone “special” I think.

    @Josh:

So, I’m not the only one whom DBZ inspired to take up bodybuilding? Haha. Unfortunately, in my case it was only temporary. Did you ever look into PK abilities? Did you ever try to learn how to levitate, make ki balls, or will your hair color to change? I did… No joke…

  13. April 6th, 2009 at 10:26 | #13

    @Stevie B:

yeah beowulf in the first half was good and the 2nd half I was in WTF!? mode 8O

and a 3d movie will just be boring to me cause we have seen everything and known everything about the show 3d would have just made it boring imo.

@ThatGuy: I was about to post this, I was sad after reading this, I wish it would be a little bit better than what most are saying. I am still going to see this in theaters on friday in hopes that we have a sequel with Vegeta, whether it is made by Wong or a new director. I want the DB live action saga to continue for numerous movies. I think the actors and everything are fine, everything I’ve heard bad is that the script is bad, not necessarily the acting, CGI, or DB interpretation. Remeber guys a bigger budget (typically) means a better movie so the sequel will hopefully improve if it is made.

    Support DBE!

@ThatGuy: I hate Dragonball Kai. It lied. It said it would cut the filler out. Episode 1 has filler. The animation looks exactly the same. The only thing different from DBK and DBZ that I have noticed is the intro, the first 5 minutes of episode 1, and the ending. Which the intro animation is how they should have drawn DBK. Not just make the anime look brighter. Wth? I got overhyped for nothing. I may as well just rewatch the anime. Atleast it already has all the episodes released.

Anyway. Cant wait to see DBE on Friday :]

I’ve been sticking by this movie since like the end of 2007 and i’m disappointed of this movie i don’t blame the actors or anything but i blame the storyline, screen writing, and producing. They could’ve done alot better if they put some effort in.

Well they tried something different with Dragonball and most of the fans don’t like it(saw that coming), but from what I understand they were pretty much pressed for time and had a not so good script due to the writer’s strike. And also I’ll add that the movie company of Fox is currently ran by a bunch of knuckleheads( one of my favorite insults). So I think they are actually doing all right in the box office. Personally I think Japan would have hated this movie regardless of the quality( if they made it their it would have made like 300 mil on the first day), but I also think it will make a good sum of money here in the U.S.(a lot of kids and patient fans will check it out opening day) . It think it will make around 20-40 mil( I know you guys are like ” this movie can’t even make 7 mil which I might add is a ridiculously low estimate.) I not saying this movie going to be blockbuster gold, but I’m saying it would do that bad(if it does…..I would change studios(possibly Universal..Sony…heck even Disney…yes ….Disney and keep the cast and director if possible.) So that was my 2 cents….and then some

i loved it with few critisisms. NOT LONG ENOUGH!! if they had made it longer it would have been easier to fit in more of the original manga and anime which is my other critisism. i hope they make 7 movies aswell or less and realy long movies

seen the movie (uk) and IT WAS AWESOME NO DOUBT.

Not perfect, but hey Dragonball Evolution isnt Dragonball or Dragonball Z so i didnt expect anything perfect.

This is only the beginning…. :D :D:D it was awesome for a film at that budget that was talked about!

Way to go Wong! Woohoo! its fab.

    April 8th, 2009 at 13:27 | #41

Well, I’m the UK, I just came back from the movie.

I won’t say this is a box office breaker, I won’t say it’s shite, I will say I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Get the cons out of the way, they refer to ki manipulation as “airbending” but hey, that’s a little urk. Using the term Kamehameha for all ki stuff was also a little urksome, but nowhere near as bad as the over use of the term in the US dub of the anime. And, too friggin’ short!

    Now, Pro’s.

It scraps some of the fantasy, at first I was unsure but tohaving seen the movie I can call this movie sequel conscious, if Saya-jin’s fall from the sky in the next one and they fly to Namek after that it’d look out of place.

It was true to the spirit of characters like Bulma and Chi Chi, but dial down on Chi-Chi’s temper.

Goku has become the everyman to help people relate, you can’t relate to the super kid or to the uber-being that is SSJ Goku. In character he reminded me of the Manga teenage Gohan, but that wasn’t a problem for me as it was played with plenty of charm.

Roshi is now a mix of perv and old sage, which is great as a plot device and this Roshi is probably more likable than the manga one. It also will help keep him useful in later parts as opposed to being replaced outright by a talking cat, an old Namek and Kaiou-samma. Sequel consciousness again.

Little hints to the future and to the manga itself, like Chi Chi in a castle (hello, where’s King Ox, lol) and the fact Goku makes an off the cuff remark of the Namek. Goku’s final attack harkens back to the fight with Picollo Daimou too.

Overall it’s an above average popcorn flick and also the great starting block of a franchise, I’d say it did a better job than Twilight at least of that. Might even go back and see it again. :D

  42. April 8th, 2009 at 17:19 | #42

hey its ssjgoku90501 and on the new update the info said that the budget was 50million i think in the next 2 weeks they will probably have 100,000,000 in profit  what do you :?

Hopefully the sequel would be longer ^^

This movie its a kick in the ass for all DragonBall Lovers.
Not because they havent the money, because the argument is so poor, is the same that happens in all USA movies, piece of crap.
The director never saw dragon ball, he took all the caracters and made a typical film about teenagers.

    Greetings from SouthAmerica… :-)
