Sequel Greenlit?

At the end of a rather routine TV Guide interview with James Marsters (Piccolo) on April 6th, it was revealed by the host that Justin Chatwin (Goku) had said the sequel to Dragonball: Evolution was recently green-lit.

If that’s true, it’s somewhat of a surprise the studio hasn’t decided to wait until after the movie premieres in North America. But, with the newly confirmed budget of $50 million and *SPOILER* a cliffhanger at the end of Evolution, it’s not impossible.

Watch at 4:30 mark.

What do you think the possibility of a sequel is at this point?

That’s one hell of an answer. Totally correct. I only wished they had more production budget. The movie should ‘ve been longer to make everything in it right. Now you get some sort of overblow-effect: too much information in 80 minutes. Btw, if you look to the details of the movie, you’ll see that they adapted more thn you think. For example: Someone above wrote that it makes no sense that Goku becomes stronger than all the others once he became one with his Oozaru-creature within him, that it would be much more appropriate if Goku would go mad because Piccolo threatens ChiChi for example. But what’s happended in the movie is actually exactly the same as in the anime series!! Don’t you remember (in DBcartoon) Goku went for the Holy Water to become stronger to beat the evil King Piccolo? When he drank the Water, HE BECAME ONE WITH HIS FULLMOON-FORM!Also later in the serie he attacks Piccolo with his camehameawave to fly through Piccolo’s belly. At that moment you see the monkeyform together with Goku attacking Piccolo. That’s just the same what happened in the movie (OK, here it’s not through his belly but it’s a family movie :p). The only difference here is that there is no Korin, no Kami and no Holy Water and that’s just because the movie would be a hell lot worse if all that information also be in this really SHORT movie. That’s the problem. In the cartoon they had plenty of time to explain everything (maybe a little to much time some think). That’s not the case in this movie. My personal opinion is that there was too much information in such a short movie, but I know they already skipped much information. It was the necessary thing to do. The movie had to be much longer for more information, but for that, they need more budget and there was no more budget.
Sorry for the language here, but i’m not english :p

Dragonball Evolution Sucked…Wasn’t even close to being anything like the real Dragonball series

  3. April 17th, 2009 at 11:32 | #3

    @Ssjgokuuuuu

Interesting to read that there were similarities to the original Dragonball cartoon regarding the final battle. I’ve never really watched much of Dragonball, but watched Dragonball Z religiously. I actually mentioned in the my review / post-mortem on my site (http://danielcarvalho.com/articles/dragonball-evolution-review/) that I didn’t like the fact that Goku flyed forward into the Kamehameha towards Piccolo. So that’s an eye opener.

I’m keen to get the series and watch it through, feel like I’m missing a piece of the puzzle.

Sorry, didn’t link that article properly. Here we are for reference:
    Dragonball Evolution Review.

Also, yeah, Goku is not Asian. I’m tired of seeing this point brought up time and time again. It’s as if people don’t think about it for a second before they comment. As mentioned above, just because it was created by Asians, doesn’t mean all the characters are Asian. In fact, in Animé in general, they love using western characters. Big eyes etc… Goku was as white as you could come.

Furthermore, barring that fact, he’s a Saiyan from another planet. So if he’s white and the others happen to be Asian, it actually creates a perfect contrast that supports that he is indeed “foreign” and from another place.

Man, Goku would have been TERRIBLE if he was Asian. That’s one thing I’m glad the studios have control over, and not the fans.

Mini me as Krillian!? Please, don’t get me started.

All the people who hated this movie wanted a 1:1 copy of the manga which is ridiculous. If Goku was cast as an Asian or white guy I wouldn’t give a shit. The only thing is, it would look odd with if an Asian Goku goes SSJ with blond hair and green eyes.

Why is that after Goku changes back from Oozaru his belt and gi still intact? Is that why Piccolo repsonded with “Impossible! “? I don’t know if that’s what actually happens cause you tell some parts where cut out…

I grew up, as many of you as well, watching the Dragon Ball cartoons…Who has not heard of GOKU? The stores still advertises that because it is one show that has been on for decades and youngsters do like to be like Goku. I went to the movie to see how they’d have done the movie… WHAT THE HELL WERE ALL THE EXTRA MOVES ON KAMEHAMEHA… Couldn’t the audition with better actors better fitting the characters (not 26years old to play a 17-18 years old)…maybe they should’ve also audition for better Writer and Director too. When you take this show that people can relate to and flip to a piece of crab, what are we left with?….CRAB…Pure piece of ####### CRAB.
The movie which had so much potential in it was totally misguided. Over the year, there was been so many cartoons in which made it BIG time in the screen, example: Spiderman, Iron Man, Hulk, X-Men and the latest Watchmen… Now we ask why…? Well, there is only one explanation; They relate to us some point in our live. I would give this movie a 2/10 and I would tell the director and the writer to go and understand the cartoons and how the fans do feel before making another waste of time and money because to me the real DRAGON BALL movie that I have been waiting for years it’s still made.

    Ok, Firstly, i loved it

How many ppl here, watched dragonball/ dragonballz, then when the show goes off the air almost cried, btu stilll got that amazing feeling when there would be a one off episode to watch??? i dont know about u guys, but when i do see that one off episode, and the hole world is about to crumble, theres no-one around who could possibly save it? and then….GOKU, i always used to think ( who ever the bda dude was, piccolo, vegeta etc etc ) ” your Funked now ”
and i got the same feeling from the film, that end bit, when goku starts saying that magical word…..u know the one…….when u know everything is going to be ok……u see he gathers all his energy…….and says it….. ” KA….ME……” and u think ” funk yh this is going to be funking awesome !!!!!!!!
so quit hating on the film jus cause its not a literal translation of the cartoon. i mean cmon, the dragonball cartoon had goku looking like a 5 year old with a big stick, if u can name me one , 1. one 5 year old actor who could possibly fill the spot of goku ill admit they could of done better.

    theres more to come!!!

Ok so me and my friend finally got to see the movie, and their was only one other person in the movie theater 8O . Way to advertise Fox.

Ok now about the movie, first of all it needed to be longer. Second it could have been better if they had more characters from the original series. The movie also needed a longer finally battle, and could have had a better introduction for the Great Ape, but on the positive side at least they had the ape even if it was not a “Great Ape”.

Over all I liked the movie and though they did pretty well at adapting the story, but sadly it could have been so much better.

Also it sadly seems that they did not leave much room for DBZ as the sequel. They end by showing Piccolo a at someones house and still alive. For one thing, Piccolo relies on no one to take care of him. And I mean what is the point of showing that scene, it is like they are foreshadowing Piccolo as the main villain in the next movie. A better ending would have been to show a few years later with a clip of Raditz crashing his space ship/pod in to earth and have it end with the dust clearing and Raditz emerging from the pod. This would have been a much more suspenseful ending to the move and a great opening for DBZ.

I agree that their needs to be a lot more advertising for it! If it werent for Shonen Jump i wouldn’t have known when it was coming out! A lot of fans still do not know if it is out or not so they need to do a lot more advertising! I am still wanting to see the movie preview of it. I am definitely going to go and see the movie again it was so kick–ass I LOVED IT!! :D

By the way whoever is going to be playing Future Trunks better be good and a real swordmaster, and has to pull of having lavendar and dark purple hair with short and long length!! He is my favorite character and has to pull of the handsome hybrid VERY WELL, and he is after all the HOTTIE YOUNG MAN OF DBZ and no one less than perfect is going to pass, and i know for sure many ladies will be pissed if they screw him up, and besides him: Vegeta and definitely the androids. SO FOX YE BE WARNED: DONT SCREW THESE CHARACTERS UP!!

Dude, it was an al right movie but they rushed the story and they rushed the fights which really did piss me off, but they got most of it right, but 2 be honest they could have made it more accurate.

I agree with Stephanie. Not about the hot part (hehe), but they definitely should make more movies (eg. the vegeta saga, the freeza saga, the android/cell saga, and all the rest of the sagas). I loved the movie & the cartoon also. I’ve seen all episodes & this cartoon has really inspired me. I really hope they are going to make more movies to the end (which is the Kid Buu saga)

I agree with SSJ gogeta i think they should make DBZ movies based on the actual sagas, but doing dragon ball was a bit of a screw up. They should start the movies from the saiyan saga.

I was very upset with this movie. I am a dbz fan fiction writer. I have been writing for about ten years. I have loved all dbz movies for even longer than that. Who ever it was that wrote this story was not an dbz fan. I have read better fan fiction on fan fiction . net. If you did not want to follow the story line of the show then pick up wear if left off. Make your old fans want to see it while creating new ones. I know That I have spent hundreds of dollars on dvd, vhs, posters, toys, cloths and games. Just in the name of DBZ. I have three boys and they have had many DBZ parties. I the consumer would not pay 20 cents on anything dealing with this move. I would like to see them try it again but this time ether follow the story line or pick up a new one that dose not stray to far off from the original show. We want to see blue hair. monkey tails, talking cats, freaky old men and most of all fight scenes were they actually fight. If you need inspiration Go to the fan. http://WWW.onnacafe.com is neo b chan web page read her work. anything she writes would be a strait block buster

they screwed up the original storyline in the first movie . .. i sincerely hope that when the next movie appears . . they stick by the story like in the animated series .. they can easily let piccolo and goku work together in the second movie and let appear vegeta, radditz and nappa . .. like in the animated series . . I think that’s the best thing they can do.
I’m a hardcore fan of DB, DBZ and DBGT and I say . ..
let the next movie come but I really hope they change back to the original story . .
btw. evolution was good but could be much better . .. . .

If you guys do make a sequel… the next villain should look like an adult man who has hair like Goku’s… and maybe a tail. Maybe he would take the name “Vegeta”, but he’d be different a bit.
I don’t know why, but I once saw a photoshopped picture of it, and I thought it’d be a neat idea to use the design in the sequel…

Personally i thought the movie was pretty good, better than i thought it was going to be. A good cast of actors, a little short on the fights, but yeah they should make a sequel. But next time they should have promoted it better, thats why i didn’t think it did so well in the box office.

I think if they made a sequel to this they should do one of two things
    1. Make a prequel that follows the manga more
    2. Or just redo the movie all together (but that seems less likely)

Maybe it will be like the star wars trilogy they’ll do DBZ first then go into Goku’s childhood

It took me till today to see the movie Dragon Ball Evolution. I think the idea behind making a human interpretation of this movie is great. I jus hope that now that they started making movies of it that they continue to the end of the actual storyline. Sales might go down unless you show us the ending of the original story. In the end you will attract a lot of viewers with a great saga if thats what you want to call it. I was dissappointed only when this movie ended. I liked it and politely demand a sequel, at least one. :-)
