Dragonball Evolution Flops Domestically

April 13th, 2009

Dragonball: Evolution debuted at No. 8 this past weekend, raking in an abysmal $4.8 million. This brings the film’s total up to $42 million worldwide. Fox told Variety it met the studios low expectations, and considering they did a horrible job promoting the movie, that’s not surprising.

    I just saw the movie and was dissapointed. Granted they have a complex storyline to adapt but they completely left out key characters (Krillin) and the red ribbon army which is significant part later in the storyline (android/cell saga). They could have at least added half an hour where goku fights the RR for a dragonball.

    @Arcangel: First, learn how to spell, and second i didn’t call anyone specific a moron, i simply stated that anyone, even if they are a moron can make a movie, but that just because it is “suppose” to be a DB movie doesn’t mean you have to love it being a DB fan. And if you think I worship Akira Toriyama like some ppl, i don’t. I enjoyed his story for DB and DBZ. But he said he enjoyed DBGT which i didn’t agree with that, so if he actually honestly enjoyed DBE I don’t have to agree with him. I support what I believe to be good work. DB and DBZ were good work, DBGT and DBE were not, and most agree with that, if you think otherwise that is fine. But DBE was not Akira’s story, nor was he involved in a large way in the movie. I like his work, but so far other’s attempts to expand on DB or DBZ in movie or show form have just fallen flat. And trust me I am a supporter of DB and DBZ, I have all the manga’s and episodes. I always will support them, but not this movie. The ppl who made this movie had nothing to do with the original show or manga, therefore I or anyone else owes them nothing.

    There are 2 kind of people here..

    basicaly..
    People who liked the film..
    And people hated the film..

    In the world…
    Counting DB fans and non DB fans…

    “Haters “>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> “Lovers”

    Its a fact.

    Fact as the ridicculous box office in all world…

    But I think Lovers and Haters should agree that DRAGON BALL didn’t deserve those numbers.

    All of us wanted that a Live Action Dragon Ball movie as a real blockbuster. A Great Movie
    But DBE is very far away from it…

    Hey Guys,

    I’m hope everyone have great time here!

    i’m from United Arab Emirates and I live in Dubai, I saw Dragonball Evolution on Thursday opening night and guess what, I was shocked that this film wasn’t on any Grand Cinemas ( Main Big Theaters In UAE). But, I wanted to see this film so I went to nearby small theater in Festival City, Dubai. I was very happy to see that they were showing DBE in that day, but I felt very sad because I didn’t see any “single” film poster!!
    Eventually, there was a lot of DRAGONBALL FANS in the cinema, the tickets were sold out!!!! 8)
    And, I was so damn lucky to buy an ticket for this C+ film :twisted:

    Overall, I enjoyed this film and I think the problem was with the promotions and I think the Director and the script writer didn’t have visionary of Dragonball World! But the director was not bad :-) If he sticked to the original story, the film would be great and would gain more money.

    I hope everyone agree with me :P

    lol so admitting that the movie sucked dragon balls makes u not a db fan?? lol u idiot we all loved dragon ball thats why were here, but the movie was baaaad, not just promotion, the actual movie was garbage you dont get it, the acting, the fighting, the special effects were all bad and even worst the story, if they actually remained true to story they would not be were this is now… with a 3/10 rating and bad reviews all over the place, also noone went to watch it and the ppl that went almost puke while watching it.

    when they make a good movie like i know they can then its gonna be cool, theres still so much that can be done as far as fighting in movies that db would be a wonderfull start…. but stephen chow is ont he right direction with shaolin soccer and kung fu hustle… now those are good martial arts film.

    Sorry for my bad english.
    Thats all what i can speak here in Germany…

    I watched crank 2 and its so funny with one of my favorite actors Jason Statham and I compared it with DBE.
    DBE is the worst movie in theaters now. I am lucky that I watched the pirated version and did not support FOX. If u love it I respect your opinion but from my point of view it is a big flop.

    Man,I’ve been waiting for this movie to come out since I first read about Fox buying the rights to the live action movie of the dragon ball franchise back in 6th grade,I’m :evil: now a junior in college. When I heard production had started I was all excited to watch this movie,and I knew of alot of people who were eager to watch this. The more and more information that was leaked out the less and less enthusiastic I became. When I saw casting,I was very disapointed as the cast picks were just stupid,the only good cast member was Piccalo,but they managed to mess that up. When hearing about Goku going to high school and Chi Chi being the most popular girl at school I just knew I wasnt going to watch this.I instead watched the pirated version earlier,and was completely disgusted on how the RAPED the dragonball franchise,this has absolutely nothing to do with dragonball,goku could even pronounce “Namekiens” correctly, and then Gohan and Master Roshi live in a suburban neighborhood?Also,ware where all the main characters at?I honestly hope that the scrape the whole thing,and instead of doing a sequal to this peice of garbage the go back to the drawing board and higher a better director and screen writer,one that preferibly knows what dragonball/z is,they need to make something true to the manga/anime and not try to make this into a highschool musical/twilight fusion.PLEASE FOX, JUST MAKE A DRAGONBALL MOVIE THAT ACTUALLY HAS SOME RESEMBLANCE TO DRAGONBALL,THE FANS WILL WATCH IT IF IT STAYS TRUE TO ITS ROOTS!!!!

    @picollo88:
    for the bootleg i gave it an 4/10
    but in theaters i gave it 7.5/10
    my point thow u maybe wont like it after watching in the theaters it still would be way better them the bootleg, trust me!

  13. April 19th, 2009 at 06:44 | #13

    @Arcangel:

    i think if youre a fan in general people should give it a chance they dont have to like it of course, but at least give it a fair shot (meaning not watching the bootleg) if you hate it 2 bad if you like it cool.

    People bashing the movie when they didnt see it just shows how ignorant they are, go see it first and then state your opinion, and bashing someone who likes it is very immature, i myself enjoyed the movie and my friends did too and give it an 8/10, but again people dont have to like it but it would be cool to give it a fair shot like any other movie

    @Piccolo88

    im glad that you respect others opinion because your one of the few that will. but 1 question why did you compare crank with DBE? :?

    I gave it 2/10, honestly, no better than that.

    u rite i seen something different the second time i seen the movie some of the scenes where way longer than the first time i watched and they even added scenes…was wierd but koo all at the same time
    regular movie – 8/10
    extended movie – 9/10

    @vegeta720
    can you describe what you mean about longer scenes and if this is true, then what is fox playing at?
    also to me it seems that this movie, to me feels like one of those stand alone db animated movies, short, a little rushed, some plot holes

    Of course i liked it. No matter what people say its still dragonball. Even if the story wasnt exactly like the show its still Dragonball and noone can ever change that fact. Im still excited for the sequel. I just need to find something to do until 2011. :D :D :D :D :D

    wasnt too thrilled with the movie…i mean i know it was going to be different, but it was too diferent from Dragonball for me.
    Anywayz…..

    You know who would have been a perfect fit for Master Roshi?

    I think Pat Morita, Mr Miyagi from the Karate Kid, i just think the way he taught Daniel in those movies were similar to the way Master Roshi would have, and if you have seen Pats other movies including the Karate Kid…he has that humor Master Roshi has. Just too bad he is no longer with us. :cry:

    Agree? Disagree?

    I think they should of switched Chow Yung Fat to play Grandpa Gohan and the guy who played Grandpa Gohan to play Roshi i mean he already had white hair and a white beard

    Hi, the estimates for this weekend has come in, these are not accurate, it could be more, it has made around nearly $1.6 million this weekend, taking its total to $7.8 million domestically, i think the idea for a reboot that animemovie user said is very possible, they have surpassed the movie budget which is $45 million, the reason why i am saying more is because of the overseas gross that is expected to be updated tommorow. To be a successful movie it should have made a total of $150 million world wide for a $45 million budget movie. Honestly if you check the matrix it had made a worldwide tally of over $300 million for a $60 million budget movie and the movie was really good, dragonball sequel should also be able to make alot if they make it much better, i beleive it could make more if all the fans watch it and not watch the bootleg.

    I have another update on dragonball, the foreign gross for the movie has come in, dragonball has made a total $44 million overseas, it has been reported it made $3,8 million, the top was made by fast and furious which made around $35 million this week overseas, so for dragonball evolution has officially made over $50 million worldwide.

    Your a fool, anyone here don’t bother arguing with this guys he’s a waist of time. He’s proved this time an time again with his pointless an irrational posts. It has surpassed it budget already an probably will get to 60 million I would take a guess. So could we see a sequel probably but who knows.
