Oozaru and Piccolo Concepts

piccolosmallAlex Tuis, a concept artist for Dragonball: Evolution, recently posted some of his artwork for the film on his official website. With not much else to report, it’s definitely worth a look if you’re interested in what could have been if they had chosen his designs. Click here to see his concept art for Piccolo and Oozaru.

The idea was to make something original and a little bit different from the Manga or the animated tv show. At this stage, I did not know who will play Lord Piccolo.I worked only four days on this movie. I hope to be on the next one, with more time.

[Thanks, Al]

Think about this, If I made a movie about a superhero that had the hugest burden placed upon him, that of saving the world. He would have to train 24 hours a day, master every skill of his ancestors, evolve from a boy to a man. But wait he has to remember his books for school which lasts from 8-3p, homework first then save the world. Now ask yourself, doesent that just f*** up the whole plot about how serious the world is compared to doing your homework, or trying to get a girl. I bet you never thought of that, yet you keep on trying to fill the script with crap, when the story already has a hell of alot of dialog to fill a volume of books. Fox, you suck

James Marsters can buff up all he wants, but hes still to SHORT for Piccolo junior.
I like James hes the only one who knows what DB is and hes a big fan himself. But hes TOO SHORT, maybe he will stand on the BOX besides Goku in DBE2 like Tom Cruise.

yes fox cares most about money they are ij the movie biz, they are the ones that put up the money for the film to be made and if the budget was 45 mill, then they made back their money plus a small profit, so that determines a sequel. some people seems to forget the international bo, that the only thing that saving the movie. also if film studio only listened to what people want then nothing would get made, the way I see it no matter how the movie turns out the hardcore anime fans would still find something to hate about it. look at wolverine, the hardcores are shitting on it but they are planning a sequel already because of money it has made.

  5. nanjiro
    May 7th, 2009 at 13:06 | #5

@Ernesto: its completely different, wolverine surpassed its budget in 3 DAYS,, and even if hardcore fans hate it, i doubt thats the general consensus about the movie

dragonball, with 1/3 of wolverines budget, barely surpassed its budget in ALL the WEEKS it was released. and almost everyone agrees that dragonball is a c class movie, most people hate it. i doubt fox will put money into a sequel of a movie that most people hate

they should know that if they put 50 million like they did with this one, theres no way they ll make the budget back, they did it in the first one because the name is dragonball, but the fans wont fall for that again, at least i wont. i wont pay to see another c class movie

so if they make another one, they ll have to at least double the budget and make a decent movie, otherwise, carrying the weight of this failure, its gonna bomb even worse than this one

i bet you, if they make another 50 million budget dragonball movie, theres no way they will make their budget back, most of the fans that payed for this one hated it, and most of them wont pay for another cheap movie

oh, and xmen movies have their own base of followers by now, they do not depend on hardcore fans to be successful anymore, just like transformers and spiderman and batman, etc,, so its very different to dragonball movies

@haqq: This guy really has some problems. If he’s been complaining about Piccolo not being black even AFTER the movie’s release, and even AFTER the entire main cast is officially signed on for 2 more sequels (hopefully both will be better). I really don’t think that they would give Marsters roll to another person just because of their color or their “more believable” acting at being evil. Marsters already nailed his role as Piccolo.

Personally, I think this dude should just grow up, deal with it, and move on in life.

Look my friend, i am not very difficult person, i have not hard demands on the DB movie, but atleast i expext some satisfaction.
I know months ago from the trailer, that this will be a big flop. Because trailers show as usually the best from the movie. Just some cool shots from a blockbaster. But when i saw DBE in HD.
I dont trust my eyes first. I saw it 5 times, and the first thing i thought was: “Why looks it so cheap? It cost 100mil., right?” But i say to my self, ok its just the trailer dont berate this before you see the hole thing. Than comes the second trailer, with this japanes music (really awfull ), and saw the piccolo vs. goku fight, i was : “cool!” , and than the small dragon: WTF IS THAT?! I had mixed experience. The mood goes down. But i had still hope. For this. But…. than…you know the result.
I and the others waited too long , and they give us this. CRAP.
this Nanjiro has right. This is a C-Class movie. Unfortantaly.

  11. Destroyer
    May 7th, 2009 at 16:24 | #11

Of course the fans will allways complain about this, like i said, there is no satisfaction for them. Nothing good in this movie anyway. Nothing.
Yes, perhaps, in some places funny. But, funny is not enough for DB. DB was not a comedy. It was anime with funny elements. And they made a comedy about it. And this piss me off.
The basic element of Drgaonball, Z, GT = fight, fight, fight FIGHT. And i mean DB FIGHT.
    - Not Dead ore alive fight
    - Not Mortal combat fight
    - Not Ultra violet fight
    - Not cheap movies fight
    - Not even the Matrix fight
I mean the DB fight. And for this is the budget of 50 mil laughable. Wolverine has the budget of 150 mil. Db has 50 mil.
WOW FOX, cool investment. You really trust the anime. Cool thing. Why are all the american super hero movie have allways a megabudget. DB is stupid?! No, Hulk is stupid – a big green stupid dummy, who allways says the same thing: Hulk smash! = S T U P I D
Captain America = a guy with the american flag on his budy and stuff – you are kidding me. They will make Antman WTF?!! Thor?! WTF?! And ton of other weird stuff.
…. i just dont like most of the american comics. Only Batman is departure from the rule. Dragonball is popular on all over the world, and they dont give it a chance. Why? I dont get it? The must be stupid!!!!!! But all of them in FOX? How much stupidity is in this movie company. I wish i can delete my memory from the last year in regard to this movie. I ma sick of it. Every time i try forget this silly little movie. Weeks after i am again confrontated with this awfull name: Evolution. But i think a cuple of months will do it.

check the polls again buddy, over 65% of the people on this site gave dbe a 5/10 or better. and nearly 50% gave it a 7/10 or better. so for u to claim that most people hated it is wrong. the only reason it gets so bashed on is its own fans. they are tearing this movie apart, on any medium they can, its sad rly. the low scoring on imdb is not from ppl actually giving a movie review, but expressing ther rage. the movie doesnt deserve the crap its getting. and whats rly funny is that alot of ppl say they watched it , liked it, and was able to see the refrences and similarities to the anime. and then thers the haters that say everything was wrong and that they hated the movie. hmmmm, who to believe? im sry, but ill stick the ppl who enjoyed it, its obvious the ppl who hated it went into the theater with a one track mind. they wanted talking pigs, and shape shifting cats. its no wonder they didnt like the movie, they wanted a cartoon with human actors. its getting a lil pathetic to hear all the haters repeat themselves over and over.

    @nanjiro
yes you would, if there was a sequel you would watch it, only because your inner dbz fan will be curious. also I am not basing the fact that a movie that you though was terrible, that will determine a sequel because I believe that these studios, don’t always listen to the internet blogs because they believe majority of people on blogs are nuts so they won’t determine a sequel by “internet outrage”. also whats different when it comes to wolverine? to fox its all money, if they invested heavily on a movie then they are expecting big money and if it invested very small then there is low expectations and if it surpasses its budget then that a success to them. its all about the money to fox no matter if it s wolverine, dbe or titanic. listen, a studio can only can make movies a hope people like it and make money, there is no such thing as a movie that 100% of the audience that is going to like it, thats just the way it is. finally I make these arguments based on facts and what has been done in the past, not by what I thought of the movie. example I hate the underworld franchise, but they made money and there will probably be a part 4.

    May 7th, 2009 at 17:24 | #14

    @destroyer
I am not questioning what you thought about the movie, there is nothing I can do about that, Im just basing facts, if a movie makes money, then its most likely going to get a sequel. yes the US numbers are bad( due to lack of Promo) but the International bo are pretty decent.

and ive defended this movie from haters for a year and a half,,and i was open to changes, and even defended most of them, but what they did is just ridiculous,,, they made a cheap kids movie out of dragonball,, they didnt even try to make it right

the movie went dvd in some countries, as did others including hannah montana, fast and furious, and crank 2, because the movie studios see a better profit in those countries by releasing on dvd rather than theaters. which no1 rly goes to in those parts of the world. so it was not because of quality of the movie(even tho i think f&f 4 was shit), its all about money. and the fact that it dropped out of theaters in the U.S. is promotion, it may be a broken record, but its true. no promo = no knowledge of the film=no ppl = no money. it did its thing in the international B.O. so they didnt have any problem pulling it early and prolly tryin to get to the dvd asap to see where that takes the overall gross. im sure that will be what rly determines what type of sequal we will get, low budget or block buster.

  21. kame
    May 7th, 2009 at 20:46 | #21

o ya, wolverine is also goin to dvd in some countries aswell. it just shows its all about the money, what ever makes the studios the most money possible is what they’ll go for. every1 is just to into connecting dots for this movie, they see lower budget, bad U.S. promo, bad reviews, straight to dvd in some countries and they think its all linked together because in ther opinion this movie is terrible and the rest of the world agrees with them. thats very untrue, beside the ppl on this site ive read in a many different places ppl exressing ther liking of the movie.

    @kame

Ok I’ll admit that no rating on imdb is completely truthful (although a poll in a site used for news of DBE, is obviously biased so you can’t base anything on either one), however the tomatometer for this movie is 13% that means that 87% of professional critics hated it, giving it an average rating of 3.4… not that far from imdb’s 3.2. And even coreywilson, who gave it a 9/10 keeps repeating that for the sequel they better handle this movie completely different (you can imply from his statements that he wants the sequel to be handled with the respect DBE lacked). And it didn’t do good at the international boxoffice, at best it did mediocre, since Fox only gets to keep half of the international BO. In almost every country it was mostly a relatively good first weekend and then a huge drop, as theaters raced to get rid of it. I mean, so far, internationally it has done almost the same as Final Destination (either one, and it looks that it won’t make much better), both were R rated horror movies, which means that it has a much smaller audience than a PG movie, I know Ernesto will probably say that Final Destinatin was good or that it did great at the BO, but seriously, doesn’t Dragon Ball deserve so much better? it could have done great at the box offfice if it wasn’t a rushed piece of cliched martial arts/fantasy-adventure crap, and it would have paved the way for many sequels.

Now regarding the lack of promotion… if a movie is really good, word of mouth is all the promotion a movie needs (look at slumdog millionaire), if a movie is bad, well no one will tell their friends to go see it, since they’ll probably be ashamed of watching it. I mean if the movie was horrible (which it is) but at least showed an innovative and epic way of fighting, I’m positive the numbers would have been completely different. Also the lack of promotion shows how little faith Fox had riding on it, if they had thought it could be a blockbuster they would have marketed like crazy, and like I have said before if Fox thought it was crap… well most of the things Fox does are crap so…..

I actually like some of these drawings wayyy better than what I saw at the movie….. this movie should have been called “Dragonball Me”

Terriblem movie, the way King Piccolo is taken out looks so dumb lol. The Kamehamehas look more like a hadoken than anything else… I expected more ‘power’ to be put into them, more solid, maybe a bit more electrifying (was that fire he’s controlling?). Oozaru looked like he was 10 feet tall rather than the MONSTER shown in the anime/manga. Even Shen-long/Shenron just looks like a little lizzard in the sky…. what happened to the sky getting Dark and thunder raining down? Where’s his loooong body and his deep-freaky voice? Bulma’s hair didn’t come out blue, instead she has one little strand of blue in her hair… Ridiculous. Even Goku acts nothing like himself!

“Master Rochi, please help me get some girls, teach me how!” – Justin Chatwin As Fake Goku (ok, maybe he didn’t say it exactly like that, but very very close to it) What did I think at that moment? ‘It’s over!!!!’ Booooo, get him out, not even close.

Everything went wrong in the movie… Hollywood ruins yet another great legend…. WHY!? To be honest, when the movie was over: me and my friends were so deeply dissapointed at our wasted time, that we snuck into Monsters vs Aliens in hopes that we’d get to see something more rewarding. Dragonball Evolution was the worst evolution ever, it’s simply a deformity, a freak of nature.

    Movie rating: 3/10

I would love to see a sequel but with the mediocrity put out by FOX and James Wong its slim. Hopefully another DB film will be considered in a few years and make it more worth while for fans and the general audience alike. :o

I agree, dbe deserves much better, with a new director a bigger budget, longer runtime, I was pointing out a argument about why the there might be a sequel, and I think its because of they making their money back, because of he low budget, that what I think. Now do I think dbe was a great movie,no, it could have been better, Im just stating what the reason they might make a sequel, because they said there will be one. And final destination movies, were sometimes entertaining, pretty original, but horror slasher movies are not really my thing.

oldboy, transformer- steven spielberg, starring Will Smith(oldboy)
    ninja scroll, akira-Leonardo Dicaprio
    cowboy bebop-Keanu Reeves
speed racer-Wacholski brother,(did you guys know one of them is a woman now?, pretty weird) so basically the siblings

@http://www.myspace.com/coreywilson10: Excusing this flick as an “adaptation” seems to be the flavor of the day.

Here’s the thing though; while it’s most certainly an adaptation, and as such doesn’t have to follow the source-material to a tee, that doesn’t excuse the fact that it’s largely DB in name only. Vague representations of the characters are there, walking around on the sceen, doing vaguely DB-esque things, but nearly everthing that defined and endeared DB to its fans has been left out in favor of Americanizing the story.

So you can call it an adaptation if that helps you enjoy it a bit more, but it’s a crass bastardisation of DB at best, and a transparant cash-in attempt at worst. I can only hope that the rights revert back to the license holders, and that this film hasn’t turned them off to letting someone with more respect for the manga take a crack at it some time in the future.

@Rockman: i agree with all you just said

@kame: as rockerman said,, 14% on rotten tomatoes by professional critics, and 3.4 rating… thats way more unbiased than a dragonball dedicated website poll

still as much as i HATE this movie, im going to buy it in dvd, even though that sounds pretty contradictory.. but as crapy as it is,, it may be the only dragonball movie ever (hopefuly not), so even if it sucks i want to have it

but seriously,, if you saw the anime, you must realize that gokus personality is EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE to what was portrayed in this movie,, i mean, thats not goku at all,, i dont give a s%%t about the race, looks, etc, but this is ridiculous,, goku after girls? cheating on training? getting angry with school bullies?? where is his pure heart? his naive personality? that is unacceptable, i could accept many changes, but they crossed the line there,, what part of that reminds you of goku?? thats the most annoying thing of the movie for me
and it pisses me off because goku is my favourite superhero of any manga, comic, cartoon, anime, etc,, by far
if they had kept his personality, even if the rest of the movie sucked as badly as it did, i would have been ok with it

I mean the guy buy’s a cosplay outfit of Goku and brags that he is gonna wear it to the opening showing of DBE. He is one of those kinda guys that loves every and any action, sci-fi movie, no matter how bad it is. He is also a DBE site troller so…

@nanjiro: I can understand what you are saying about Goku but I have a feeling that his character will have a different attitude for the second movie as at the end of this movie when he defeats Piccolo I think he kinda gets the idea of what is going on after that and how important it is to keep the dragonballs out of evil’s way, I’m not saying your wrong I completely agree but I feel that he has finally learnt something after the battle and he will change his ways, besides this is only an adaption of the anime so him being a teenager he wouldn’t really have taken this serious.

I sort of hoped that a DB live action adaptation would be a sort of mix between what asia is doing right now (I can’t wait for some of those movies) and the knowledge and resources Hollywood has, either that or just following the lines of Kung Fu Hustle/Shaolin Soccer, until I found out that it was made by Fox, saw the casting (no one knows how to fight even after the alleged 5-6 weeks of “intensive training”), and when I saw the first trailer I knew this was gonna be horrible, what did surprise me while watching it was how cliched they made the whole movie, I mean at some points I was… no way they are going to do that… and they did… by the end I was just facepalming away.

I sure hope for a reboot, in the meantime I’ll just avoid any movie that James Wong or Ben Ramsey work in, and I know there will be no sequel since the numbers are horrible (I don’t care what some people think, 55 mill in ticket sales doesn’t mean Fox will get 55 mill  , no industry works like that, in the best case scenario they would just have to pay taxes, in the real world the theaters get to keep part of the ticket sales and Fox would have to pay salaries of its administrative staff, taxes and promotion costs) but if there is, I will stay away form it and it’s toxic nucler fallout.

    @kame:

your an idiot and a liar.. i watch dragon ball so many times sincei was 7 that i remember everything that happened… db had comedy in it yeah a bit but its mainly a fighting carttoon… from the first to the last goku is fighting something or someone.. thats wht dragon ball is.. dragon ball had so many sick fights that im amazed noone complained more aboutt the movie…

th movie was fine but it was really bad, the fighting sucked… and its mainly cause the actors are not martial artist..

getting to play the worlds greates fighter with a guy that never did any martial arts is a phail.. also the script was terrible and all the shit they made up just confused ppl.

so dont say that db had lil action.. cause thats what it was 90% of the time…. tournaments, fighting, the army, training, piccolo, fighting crilin,jamcha,tien,chaos.. evryone everyone goku meet they first had a fight…. even bulma…

its funny how this internet fans of db r the guys that watch it on youtube and pretend wat the whole show is about..

i can talk cause i was there when the show came out… i had to swallow repeats of episodes until the tv channel go the new ones…. and then rewatch the whole thing until dbz came out…

    liar.

Lets just start posting simpler, whoever is in favor of the movie being overhauled with new characters, scenes, story, and plot, just say “I”, those who liked the cast of DBE, were ok with the plot being a lil distorted, and the way the charcters looked and acted, just say “Nay”. If you liked DBE say “DBE good”, didn’t like it say “DBE bad”. then write your comments, I want to really tally this up for fox. No in betweeners though, either your for or against it. So no, I liked this but didn’t like that crap.
