James Marsters (And I) on Dragonball: Evolution

A fan recorded and uploaded part of a Q&A session with James Marsters (Piccolo) on April 25th when he was in the Netherlands last month. He speaks, off the cuff, about Dragonball: Evolution, and gives his thoughts on the movie as a whole.

He’s right about one thing. The suits at Fox don’t care, and never cared, about this movie. And that wouldn’t have mattered so much if they had stayed away from the production and let the crew do their job, but Fox is unlike any other movie studio. It’s almost as if they want to piss their workers off and create horrible movies. It’s not that the other major studios like Warner Bros. and Paramount are perfect, but they at least seem to care about quality.

Anyway, it seems like a lot of people want to know my opinion on Dragonball: Evolution, and because I haven’t had the time to write a full review, I’m just going to give you my quick thoughts here.

I enjoyed it. It was fun, cheesy, and forgettable entertainment. But probably not in the way the filmmakers intended, because it was also cheap, poorly made, uninspired and bland. And I really want to stress bland. The movie is supposed to take place in a futuristic, fantasy world but it looks exactly like any city in America (if cities in America had cheap green screen effects) and Mexico. It’s the opposite of the world that Akira Toriyama created.

But the biggest problem was the script. It sucked Dragon Balls. The plot made absolutely no sense and no one seemed to care, the dialogue sounded like it was written by a 10 year old (that was a fan of Pokemon and not Dragonball), and the cliffhanger during the credits was by far the worst cliffhanger I’ve ever seen in my life. I don’t blame Ben Ramsey for all this though, because it’s obvious Fox had their greedy little hands on the thing since day one (Goku in high school? I doubt anyone but a out of touch Hollywood executive could think up something as stupid as that), but I don’t think he was the man for the job regardless.

Still, I’m not angry. Like I said before, I did enjoy it. But I am disappointed. I just wish that Stephen Chow was given a $30 million budget to direct Dragonball at a different studio, and was allowed complete creative control. It certainly would’ve been better than this Foxed up movie.

i agree…..i think the movie would have turned out much better in the hands of another studio like paramount they wouldnt have mucked it up………im having mixed feelings towards the sequel though….part of me wants a second part but after seeing DBE i dont know how it will turn out they might just screw it up…….and on the other side i want them to reboot it get a better director and a better script the movies length should be atleast 2hrs or over and the budget should be higher so they could make the CGI better and also focus on the scenery make it more futuristic…….i think the cast 4rm DBE was fine so they should probably use them 4 the reboot but should add more characters like emperor pilaf, shou, krillin and maybe the red ribbon army if they have any room left 2 put them in…………they should focus on the original dragonball manga or anime i dont mind little changes because theres always some changes in live action adaptations but not major changes…………………. that would be great

ditto. it wasnt a bad movie. it just wasnt what anyone (fans and nonfans alike) wanted to see. And as the big blockbusters are starting to come out, like with star trek; It just makes this movie all the more upsetting. It is upsetting to see them create new stories and depictions yet maintain a sensable respect for the source material.

And to look at Dragonball in hind-sight in the light of these other movies is extremely sadening. It makes me as a fan feel completely disrespected. To think that they had all the ability and potential to make this great. yet; they just didn’t! Why? because they decided that what i love, isnt worth putting as much work into it as other movies.

All because they lack understanding the magnitude and potential of what they were holding on to. How can you mess up the worlds largest anime franchise ever??? How do you not understand how this should be treated? It wasnt horrible but by no means was it anywhere near what it should have been.

I agree entirely. They could have done so much of a better job with this movie if they had cared even a little, but I guess that’s too much to ask. BTW “Foxed up” should be the new F***** up.

i found a french article about robert pattinson and emmy rossum. it basically says that along with the projects that robert is workin on, he is also in talks for another project with emmy rossum. they were seen comming out of the same studios at the same time. and from some sources the project could be the DB sequel. now i wont say for sure that its the DB sequel, but we most def. could have our Vegeta. 8)

another note is i love the honesty from James Marsters. He knew the movie wasnt gonna go over the greatest with its fans, and he knows that ther were a many things he wasnt happy with. but he also explains that it wasnt ther crew, but fox that made some serious changes that he had to fight to oppose to stay true to the story.

good lil review adam, honesty is appreciated.

hey raz_g , you complain about da music and the music on the english american translation was changed is not the original music from the anime which i think js keeps showin how northamerican keep trying to be unique on every way js like they tried to do it with this music which was an insult to real dragon ball fans, am talkin real dragon ball fans not lil kids that watched only dragon ball z, but people that grew up with it. hopefully they realize how they messed a big chance to make one of da best movies, and hopefully they get a new director, hopefully japanese people make da movie not hollywood.

It’s not just about FOX getting in everyone’s way. It’s about hiring the right people to do the job. Wong was the wrong person from the job. I think most of the actors were wrong for the job as well. I think it’s also obvious the people doing the CGI didn’t do any research whatsoever.

Why hire Stephen Chow if you’re not even going to listen to him? Fox always does this! It’s that Tom Rothman co-chairman, I’m telling ya! Tom Rothman is a poison! You’d think he’d get fired but instead he gets promoted to run/ruin FOX TV as well.

Marsters and Chow Yun-Fat came out with some truth, but I doubt you’ll hear anything from those liars Justin Chatwin, Emmy Rossum, and Jamie Chung. They’ll lie through their teeth if a paycheck is waved under their noses.

I still think you have a man crush on justin chatwin for as much as you bitch about him. The only thing your right about is the idiot tim rothman as far as justin emmy an jamie coming out an saying it was a bad movie why should they. It isn’t like they owe anybody anything we all know the actors didn’t write the script nor direct it it was james wong ben ramsey an fox at the helm.

I’m still not blaming the actors for what was wrong with the movie, hopefully they or someone else will rectify the failure of DBE an learn from it. I have lost alot of hope in ever seeing another Dragonball movie though, all I want is to see the z fighters an vegeta.

@kame: Dude, if that’s the guy that they’re planning to use for Vegeta, then just shoot me now. My heart can’t bare another DBE fuck up, or fox up. Don’t have anything against the guy, he sort of has the look but, Vegeta has to be a lot more gangsta than that….we can’t have a “pretty boy” vegeta, come on!

@kaiocris: Dude, i feel ur pain. I saw the trailer for transformers: revenge of the fallen the other day and almost shed a tear for Dragonball. Even star trek is going to be better than dragonball, shit, even Hanna fuking Montana.

AT ALL THE PEOPLE WHO WANT A SEQUEL: Don’t be decieved, a sequel cannot be better….it’s impossible. They can’t do a PG film and make the sequel a 15……can they? and if Justin is still Goku, there’s still no hope . And God forbid they make this Robert Pattison guy vegeta….oh Lord!! just forget a sequel please and give us a reboot or nothing.

    @christian:
So, any true dragonball fan should like anooying 60’s star trek king of movies? Don’t think so. Bruce Faulconer’s tracks fit dragonballZ much better, some of them are really atmospheric.
I also enjoyed the movies’ soundtrack, indeed it probably is the best thing about this movie.

I hope the Pattinson rumors are wrong, he was awful in Twilight which is an awful cheaply made boring movie. At least DBE was a cheaply made fun movie. You need a real man to play Vegeta.

Yeah…..DBE was bad….Adam, thanks for the review, and you are right. FOX just doesn’t care about its audiences; all they care about is money. After watching DBE, I no longer wish for a Dragonball Z movie. R.I.P DBZ……

  28. Ryan Martin
    May 12th, 2009 at 06:52 | #28

DEFINENTLY not Robert Patterson! If they hire him, I won’t even think about going to see the sequel. If there is a God, please do not allow a sequel with him in it. Pick someone else! Perhaps Chris Pine from Star Trek should play Vegeta?

I got a little something to say for those Fox idiots you just pissed off alot of people and one more thing STOP TRYING TO MAKE MOVIES YOU STUPID PEOPLE.

And one last thing; THE MOVIE IS GREAT!!! it could be better but it`s still one of my fav. movies now

    May 12th, 2009 at 09:03 | #31

I think there not will be DB sequel . First they dont care , second ( I could be wrong but ) they probably have to pay cinemas and other stuff so that 55mln are not exacly their money. I think we can only wait for the day when other studio take the rights to DB and make something better than DBE because i dont think FOX is ever gonna be able to do good film based on DB.
I see only one way Fox could do next Dragon Ball film. With new crew and director , more money ( 100mln min. , DB deserves that ),and DB:E must be forgotten like it never exist.

  33. May 12th, 2009 at 10:28 | #33

I haven’t posted a comment in months but i’m back and i can finally say that the movie sucked. I agree 100% with you Adam, i enjoyed watching it at theaters but the more days that passes that more i hate it. I download the DVD version of the movie just because it was free. And the movie is almost unwatchable the second time you watch it because it’s so cheaply made.

    I give Dragonball Evolution a 0/10.

and here’s a tidbit…Star Trek made 72 million opening DAY.
granted, star trek has an enormous fan base, but it also attracted many non star trek fans to the theatre.
DBZ, worldwide, probably has enough of a fanbase to rival that of star trek.
The thing I think Fox doesn’t realize, is that DB’s story, and all that goes along with it, is just as epic, just as beatiful, just as magnificent as any Star Trek, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, etc.
But since it was a manga/anime first, they didn’t give it the attention, or the care that it deserved.
Like adam said, with a THIRTY mill budget, stephen chow could’ve definitely did a better job with full creative freedom.
But even if they didn’t have FULL creative freedom, if Fox had put in more time, effect, and money into this film, say, given it the budget that Star Trek had (probably in the hundred(s) mill zone) than it could’ve been an incredible, full 2 hour, special effects crazy, epic odessy that i know at least I was hoping for.

Let me give my thought, they couldve approaced DB two ways.
    1. By changing it from a cartoon to real life, you must automatically make it more mature, more adult oriented, more serious overall (and yet keeping the same tone of DB). They could’ve had crazy fights, insane effects and ki blasts, flying, all that stuff, a super futuristic looking city, etc. It could have been not cheesy at all, the dialogue well written and intelligent, with clear plot and character development and all that stuff. It would’ve been a darker DB but still, DB.
    2. They could’ve taken the approach of, why change the tone of it just because its on the silver screen? They could’ve made it LOOK like a cartoon, like kungfu hustle, that movie looked like it should’ve been a cartoon lol. And that is what is great about it. To me, when i saw that movie, i immediately thought of DB actually. If they made it with that kind of comedy, where its just so unrealistic and over the top that its funny while the characters are acting serious because its their everyday life, to me that would’ve been perfect for DB. That would’ve REALLY captured the feel of the original manga and cartoon.

  37. May 12th, 2009 at 14:19 | #37

I agree, Adam. But was the joke about balls REALLY nescesary? I think there is enough people making immature jokes out there.

    Paramount/Universal + Stephen Chow + $50 million budget = GOOD MOVE!

Fox + James Wong + stupid, unnesscesary changes in the script = MEH MOVIE!

  38. Stevie B
    May 12th, 2009 at 14:52 | #38

I still like the movie and don’t care what other people have to say. Im not saying its perfect but it seems 90 percent of the movie fans have turned. I hope they keep the cast cuz I liked J-Chat and J-Mars but I don’t want Chris Pine. People say Robert Pattinson was bad in Twilight but its not like Chris PINE has done the best movies or has acted great in other movies, it was a good script and directing of JJ Abrams. If you want a good movie get a good script and director, you don’t need “stars”. Another good movie by Abrams was Cloverfield which had no stars, just good script and director. So I hope they keep the cast and change directors. I can’t blame Ramsey because Wong rewrote most of the script and the low budget which probably meant things had to be cut like the FINAL BATTLE

Adam, I know we have had our fights in the past and all, and its been like a month since I visited any DBE related site, but today I was bored and decided to check this site and to my surprise I find that you have made a quick review and Im glad you are being honest Adam and also I agree with you, for that I applaud you.

I used to support this movie before March, but after it was leaked and I saw it, I was so angry and dissapointed. I agree with you that the script for this movie was probably made by a 10 year old pokemon fan. This movie was a disgrace and no sequel should be made.

well im gonna say it i enjoyed the movie i just look at it as if it was an alternative dragonball but still doesnt mean they completely fucked up dragonball
now we just need warner brothers to get the rights to dragonball n paramount to produce like they did with watchemen and hire Gullmore Del Torro the director from hellboy i mean look he had passion for that movie imagine for dragonball so i say reboot n just keep james marsters for piccolo or even ray park(darth maul) or maybe he can be vegeta
hell even let me write the movie i would just do sum changes but dats it only a lil n keep bryan tyler he did a great job on the music espically when goku was doing the kamehameha

well all the comments i have read so far are all very valid and like some people have said, took the words right out of my mouth, however i feel with this film that they gave it to someone without any expression or feeling for the original idea behind it, its like putting a snooker player on a football pitch, maybe there were restrictions to what fox allowed, but if those restrictions are going to take away or jepadise the quality and authenticity of dragonball then its worth asking the question, is it worth being bought out as a film? well is it worth being bought out untill the best person for the job comes along, well thats my oppinion i dont know if anyone would agree with me.

Really though It’s rare that first movie is done right. I actually expected a mediocre first movie similar to x1, spidey 1, arguably batman 1, and so on… This movie’s not my movie really. It’s for that 8 year old who’s discovering cinema and through his little eyes this is the best movie he’s ever seen ever similar to how he-man was to me when I first saw it. Later the kid will know better, but for now, I think it’s a fine foundation on which better things can be developed if we ever get a sequel. And I hope we do. It’s such a shame that we get sequels to garfield and all sorts of other garbage, but speed racer and now dragonball just bomb out. Meanwhile michael bay’s mindless explosion fests will be the new kind of successful cinema? Granted star trek’s doing well I think because of its balance of brains and boobs… so not all hope is lost for movies… come on DBZ! I want to see chatwin go blonde!
