James Marsters (And I) on Dragonball: Evolution

A fan recorded and uploaded part of a Q&A session with James Marsters (Piccolo) on April 25th when he was in the Netherlands last month. He speaks, off the cuff, about Dragonball: Evolution, and gives his thoughts on the movie as a whole.

He’s right about one thing. The suits at Fox don’t care, and never cared, about this movie. And that wouldn’t have mattered so much if they had stayed away from the production and let the crew do their job, but Fox is unlike any other movie studio. It’s almost as if they want to piss their workers off and create horrible movies. It’s not that the other major studios like Warner Bros. and Paramount are perfect, but they at least seem to care about quality.

Anyway, it seems like a lot of people want to know my opinion on Dragonball: Evolution, and because I haven’t had the time to write a full review, I’m just going to give you my quick thoughts here.

I enjoyed it. It was fun, cheesy, and forgettable entertainment. But probably not in the way the filmmakers intended, because it was also cheap, poorly made, uninspired and bland. And I really want to stress bland. The movie is supposed to take place in a futuristic, fantasy world but it looks exactly like any city in America (if cities in America had cheap green screen effects) and Mexico. It’s the opposite of the world that Akira Toriyama created.

But the biggest problem was the script. It sucked Dragon Balls. The plot made absolutely no sense and no one seemed to care, the dialogue sounded like it was written by a 10 year old (that was a fan of Pokemon and not Dragonball), and the cliffhanger during the credits was by far the worst cliffhanger I’ve ever seen in my life. I don’t blame Ben Ramsey for all this though, because it’s obvious Fox had their greedy little hands on the thing since day one (Goku in high school? I doubt anyone but a out of touch Hollywood executive could think up something as stupid as that), but I don’t think he was the man for the job regardless.

Still, I’m not angry. Like I said before, I did enjoy it. But I am disappointed. I just wish that Stephen Chow was given a $30 million budget to direct Dragonball at a different studio, and was allowed complete creative control. It certainly would’ve been better than this Foxed up movie.

soul train, dbe couldn’t compare to Spiderman, Batman, or Xmen… It wasn’t even close. This movie is on the level of Street Fighter or some crap like that simply because you will never see it be shown on TV or bought on DVD. It’s just THAT bad.

Well.. I was really hoping the movie didn’t suck as bad as it did.

    1. The way it was shot in general was really weird for me
    2. Had almost no idea where the story was going (even more so when I realized the story wasn’t even nearly the same..)
    3. Corny as all hell
    4. failure on special effects
and so on and so on..

I beg FOX to get their dirty hands off mine and so many others’ childhoods, and and put this franchise into the hands of someone who can blow everyone’s minds away like we all know it can.

    @andy
enough with the “goku should of been asian nonsense”. hes an alien, think of him not being white either. hes non of the above. whether he looks white or not it doesnt take away from the fact that its irrelevant.

    @marster
i completely disagree with u( no offense). i thought j. chatwin was a rly good goku, and captured most of his likeness. some things about his personality were matured a bit, but overall i thought he did well. and regards to goku’s fighting style, again this is DB, so the first fights were mainly funny(bullies, gohan and roshi) while still being entertaining. the last few fights(piccolo’s minions, piccolo) the fights got much more serious. and i think it did capture the anime’s way of fighting, but it was still DB, so it didnt go full on power battles. what it did was kinda tease u for the DBZ type fights the sequel could contain, with ofcourse would contain more fighting along with power blasts and what not.

P.S. AND TO ALL THE PPL WHO KEEP CLAIMING YOUR CHILDHOOD IS RUINED, GROW THE FUCK UP. FIRST OFF IT WAS JUST A MOVIE, AND SECONDLY ITS JUST A CARTOON( atleast thats what most of u know this from). IF UR CHILDHOOD IS RUINED FROM A CARTOON U ENJOYED THAT BECAME A MOVIE AND BASED ON UR OPINION U DIDNT LIKE THE MOVIE, THEN TUFF SHIT. GET OVER IT. THE CONSTANT QQ’ING ONLY RISKS PUTTING THIS FRANSHISE ON HOLD FOR ANOTHER 10 FUCKING YRS. IF U WANT A BETTER MOVIE, BE PRODUCTIVE AND POSITIVE. SYMPATHIZE WITH UR WORDS SO THAT WHOEVER READS THIS CRAP CAN SEE THAT U WANT SOMETHING THAT U FEEL WASNT PROVIDED AND UR WILLING EXPRESS UR RESPONSES MATURELY AND RESPECTFULY. ITS NO WONDER FOX DIDNT GIVE 2 SHITS ABOUT THIS MOVIE. IF U WANT SOMETHING DONE THEN U WORK FOR IT, BUT DONT WHINE TO PPL WHO DONT GIVE A SHIT. CUZ I ASSURE YOU, WHETHER THEY LIKED THE MOVIE OR NOT, MATURE PPL DONT WANNA HEAR THE CONSTANT WHINING ABOUT TEENAGE BOYS NOT BEING ABLE TO GET IT UP TO THIS MOVIE.

no problem if they cast an american actor for goku because goku is also white . if you think that he is a japanese, sorry he is also white, japanese are all white. so i think there is no problem if goku is american in next movie.btw goku is not american nor japanese, he is a saiyan so we are not sure about his color. :P

To be perfectly blunt, if James Marsters could say exactly how he feels about DB:E if he was promised nothing would happen, he would say it sucks. If he’s such a big fan of the manga and anime, there’s no way we found the film acceptable, but it gave him a paycheck at the end, so he went with it hoping it would do enough to create a more authentic DBZ sequel(s).

I find it absolutly amazing that Fox did not want Piccolo to be green and old in this movie. Statements like that make me truly believe Fox wanted to make a bad movie on purpose.

@BizzyBum: of course he doesnt like the movie,,, but what do you expect him to say?,,, he even said he wished it was handled differently, trying not to insult james wong in the process,, but he definitely knows it sucks

if they make a reboot, i would like james marsters to stay as piccolo,, maybe give chatwin a second chance as goku as well,,, those are the only ones i would keep from this movie

@key: I couldn’t agree with you more! Everyone knows that the DB franchise needs someone who is creative enough to handle it, and for this movie its like they just picked the first guy who would take the job. I’m not gonna lie, if I were a director, and someone was to ever approach me and say “we wanna make a DB movie, can you do it?” I’d turn them down! Its a dangerous business tampering with a classic, and then you’ll get idiotic fans who don’t want you to change a single aspect of the story EVER, so what are you left with?! And if the people at Fox gave a shit about making good movies, they would’ve done what you said and waited for the right guy to take on this HUGE task.
And kame, I always agree with what you say too, becuase you say it so well.

I still don’t think that Fox saw the amazing potential they had with this franchise! I can’t remember if I’ve said this already but ANYONE born in the 80’s and early 90’s knows of or LOVED DB. My older brother who’s a complete jock watched this as a child ok! My idiotic girly girl friends have heard of DB! The only reason they didn’t go to see this movie was because it was rated PG and looked like crap (i still think it was just ok). Could you imagine how much money they could’ve made if they gave two shits and made a good movie?! Cuz then all the guys like my bro and other people born around that time, who vaguely remember the show would’ve heard it was great and saw it too! Congratulations Fox, you just missed out on an amazing business opportunity!

I really respect James Marsters for saying that he admitted 3 things:

1.He wished the movie was handeld better.

2.He stated that James Wong simplified the script too much.

3.He also said if fox really cared they would of been on set and made piccolo white emphasis on IF FOX REALLY CARED.

Thankyou very much for being real about this Adam. Your honesty is something people should learn from.

After waiting years for this… I can understand why people are pissed off beyond all reason and why they say their childhood is ruined.

    Just a movie ? yes

But if you are a huge fan of the franchise on par with trekkies and star wars fans and have been following this movie from rumor to confirmation to trailer to release. I say you have every right to be as pissed as you want. Vent all you want.

To everybody that has a problem with how much of an impact this has on a person… Deal with it. It’s not you. Don’t like that people are pissed off? Thats your problem. Stop trying to control what you can’t… its futile and will give you ulcers lol.
Fox deserves every bit of rage these people have to give them. I think that is the only way they can get through their thick “greedy greedy grease my hands with money now” heads.

People are not sheep meant for you to exploit.

yeah, fox seems to have a knack for doing this to films. just look at fantastic four or eragon ~_~ or even take a look at the x-men trilogy. its as if their intentionally making all these changes to already well established characters and stories, for the sake of it being cooler or easily marketable… its really starting to show now.

  27. May 14th, 2009 at 19:54 | #27

I honestly can’t believe years of anticipation bombed out so bad… When the movie first came out, I liked it. But the more I thought about it, re-watched it, and started noticing the BAD, is when I began to realize that this movie was an EPIC FAIL.

Yes, I was for the movie while it was in production, but now it’s just a crappy movie with bad acting, poor effects and more importantly, a horrible script. FOX should be ashamed of themselves for releasing such a horrible movie and I don’t blame any Dragonball fan for being mad about this movie anymore. Most of us (like me) wanted to give this movie a chance, and see if it would actually fail… It did.

That was FOX’s first and last chance. There may be a sequel right? Well, I’m pretty confident that, that movie will bomb out too. Here are the biggest mistakes they made with the first, which will destroy the future ones.

-Not introducing Krillin. Goku’s BEST FRIEND. Krillin died by the hands of Piccolo which sent Goku out to avenge his death. His MAIN reason for fighting and killing Piccolo in the first place.

-No Tien. Okay, just because the movie needs to be “realistic” doesn’t mean they have to give him the extra eye. Little things like Krillin’s height and Tien’s third eye is what is making me think is the reason why they weren’t added in the movie. Just like Puar and Oolong. Excluded because they were talking animals.

Does anyone remember what FOX told us while this movie is in production? They said that adding Oolong and Puar to the movie would make it too childlike or more for kids, yet the movie is rated PG. That would have made more sense to me if the movie was PG-13. Yes, I know all PG movies aren’t just for kids, but DB: E is NOT for anyone over the age of ten so they may as well had added the frickin’ cat and pig >:(

Another thing. What ws Mai’s purpose? The scripting was so bad it was completely obvious that Piccolo had more then enough time to kill Goku, Rosh (lol), Bulma and Yamcha, take the Dragonballs, and rule the world. Adding Mai made Piccolo look like a completely lazy dumbass. “Oh, I’m a super powerful Namekian who can destroy entire cities, but I’m going to send my FEMALE HUMAN henchman to do my dirty work with a Ki Blast gun while I sit here and do nothing.”

Yeah, real smart FOX. They should have hired more people who were familiar with the series before even beginning to work on this movie. It obvious that they crushed every Dragonball fan’s dream, and anyone who hasn’t realized that seriously needs to sit down and think about how this movie was made.

It took me a month to fully realize that this movie was horrible. A month for me to accept that deep down, I was disappointed. But hey, there’s really nothing we can do at this point. The movie is released and bombing in theaters everywhere. We could sit here and debate for hours about this but it will get us no where.

FOX obviously isn’t listening to us, and hasn’t been, even though they claimed that they were making it for everyone. Well, 85% of the world hates this movie. The ONLY reason why I still support it is because I’m a Dragonball fan, and always will be. YES, I will be seeing the sequel. I just hope that if they make a sequel, they go around to any Dragonball: Evolution forum there is, and get the FAN’S opinions because obviously, only us and Akira Toriyama know what the hell we want to see in a DB movie, and what ever they just showed us last month needs to be burned in a volcano.

P.S.- For anyone out there still saying “R.I.P. Dragonball” or what ever, please stop. There is no way in hell that this movie had enough potential to destroy the manga AND anime of Dragonball. Come on now, you’re going to far…

  28. May 14th, 2009 at 20:09 | #28

@nick: You’re right and I agree with you 100%. I hated the Star Trek series, but saw the movie and love it. That’s how Dragonball: Evolution should have been. It’s should have been a movie so good that it attracts most or all of its fans, and non-fans and pulls in millions of dollars.

    But hey… It’s FOX. Damn them >:(

I don’t know, I didn’t even think the actors were bad, they did the best with what they were given, which was shit. I thought the movie was enjoyable but fox effed this shit up. Some independent film company needs to come along and do dbz some justice.

For this movie, they most likely cut so much out, because it seems like the movie was in fast forward. The movie was over so quick, I might as well just watch an episode of db and call it a night. The cg was horrible in some instances. When he changes from oozaru back to goku, horribe. And what I don’t understand, if stupid ass fox knew what was good for them they would just give the film to someone who cared and let them make it how it should be made, that’s how they would make money. Take watchmen for example, being rated r didn’t hurt them at all, and I hate when that has to factor in so much just for money’s sake. They couldn’t even get a movie made that appealed to NON-fans. I barely liked the movie but based purely on the fact that I’m a huge fan of the show. The cliffhanger, I totally agree, one of the worst cliffhangers I’ve ever seen. Any fan of the show knows piccolo is split and turns good(ish), so of course he’s still alive, even though he was in the movie all of about 10 minutes. I hate when shit like this happens. Since I’ve started watching the show I’ve waited for a live action adaptation and there might as well not even have been one, because now I will continue to wait for one that’s even worthy of the title.

2 random things I just thought of:
#1-this whole star treck thing, being a great movie bla bla bla, almost brings tears to my eyes! lol I haven’t seen it yet (probably wont) and I no nothing about the series, but the fact that someone could do awesome work for something like THAT but NO ONE bothered making a good DB movie, its just saaad! Every time I see a commercial for it my heart aches (omg that sounded pathetically emo but you get my point)
#2-I’ve been randomly going through the manga’s (reliving my nerdy days) and its just making me realize even more how dumb this scenario really is. Like half the work was done already for these writers, because the story is just so unique and awesome. All they had to do was cut out some of the unimportant sagas and work with the piccolo thing aaand add some more awesome-ness (yes thats a word) and bam you’re done! I just don’t get it…I still don’t agree with the people that are saying this is the worst movie ever, or that its not worth people’s time, only on the grounds that its not gonna help to TOTALLY bash it. But yea it was disappointing, and no one can/should argue that.

Truthfully, the movie could’ve been written a little better in terms of the base synopsis “1000 years ago the evil king piccolo and his minion oozaru almost conquered the world” that almost slapped me in the face so hard i booed, i was there the first showing and i had nothing but disappointment for the flick. so what do i think about the actors, chatwain was wrong for goku (goku needs to be dumb as a box of rocks but still know how to get things done, not a whimpy cliche’d teen) at one point in the movie gohan says something about look inside for the power, which ive probably heard from every mentor in any of the crappy child-tween movies that have been made. joon park was a very good yamacha since if you think about it nailed the yamacha voice and attitude, too bad he was in like only 10 scenes, aswell with piccolo(which marsters beautifully flattered) i didnt mind the person that played bulma either. and wasnt the dragons voice supposed to be played by chris sabat, that was enough to piss me off to the point where i threw my drink at the screen, accurately hitting the top of it and spilling soda all down the credits and storming off, cussing out the ushers. well, i think puar and oolong and krillin are probably the best supporting characters in any story ever, (the solution of goku not turning into an ape because they used puar to cut off his tail) not only that but if goku wouldve actually went oozaru, he wouldve leveled the whole place, killed piccolo and thenwent on to destroy like 4 cities. everything about this movie (storyline wise) was crap (really, goku only had 1 week of formal education at the hands of roshi) but if they can take it in the right direction it would be ok. i hope they read these forums for the fans opinion because that is whats needed to save the franchise.
