I think those lyrics shows Goku’s character best.

“Yeah! Break! Care! Break! With all your power!
    Fly towards the infinite sky
    Riding on the winds
I can go anywhere in a moment
    Looking ahead is the best
    Let’s go tip-top! All right?
It’s like waking from a dream, this blue Earth
This irreplaceable planet, no way I’ll hand it over
    Send it flying, kamehameha!
    This time of troubles
You were born to protect the world, after all
Yeah! Break! Care! Break! With all your power!
    Do it, at full power!
    Hope is my weapon
    Believe in the future!”
    and
    “Clash, Clash, it’s here
    Clash, Clash, Paradise!!
The balls of energy burst open and fly away Go Go Let’s do it
    Sneaking, mysterious energy (energy)
I’ll show you no quarter, watch out!
I’ll defend it with my life (life)
My love and courage into power
With unstoppable spirit, I get out of any trouble
These tough guys don’t even make me nervous
    Clash, Clash it’s here
    Clash, Clash, here’s my chance!
Riding on the smooth winds of luck
    Clash, Clash, it’s here
    Clash, Clash, tomorrow too
You already know the answer in your soul
    Dragon Soul!”
Lyrics from Dragon Ball Kai opening and ending .

goku is a teenager, every teenager is selfish sometimes lol. Goku is the perfect example but he wasnt exactly PERFECT. especially when he was young. so chill with the selfish thing for real. he was/wasnt normal.

@DPA: Lmao thats true, they didn’t spend much time letting the audience get to know any of the characters!

@stephen: And thats true too. In the manga he was very arrogant at times, and over estimated some of his skills and knowledge, like any time he met some master you know? And even the “nice” things he did some of the times (liike 3 out of 10) were just to get a dragonball, which is a child-like selfishness that all kids kinda have. I always forget that cuz I’m so used to thinking of his character AFTER all the growth and maturity stuff, and I think a lot of fans forget that Goku didn’t develop into a hero till much much later.

I think the movie was Awsome :D
Ok it could be a better movie in places but if you think about the very first Dragonball was crap and wewere lucky to have Dragonball z even made because the producers said Dragonball was crap and had a low rating but then Dragonball Z was made and had a increasing ratings which was cool so this would have the same result 8)

guys, justlke most of you all here im also a bigfan of dragonball but i also acknowledge that we were all ripped off with this poorly budgeted movie. here in Eastlondon,South africa, they chose not to show the movie but i ended up eatching it in the net. i do not blame the director because i clearly saw tha he tried his best to come up with something new by trying to take the anime characters out of the toon and into rour everyday world in which ended up to a crappy dialog and almost intriguing storyline.

1st of all we should acknowledge that dragonball is a totally different thing compared to a comic book. im what you would call a dragonball addict,i live & breathe this thing. each and everyday i’ll strike a kamehameha pose or a charging pose. after watching that movie i decided to write a more realistic yet anime kinda story as a sequal to this shitty prequal we’ve watched.

in this sequal we see the exact things as we have seen in the anime series, such as goku having a tail, how he gets that goofy hair of his( fox needs to bring that hair in the sequal because its very important),the introduction of krillin, tien( and how he trains goku for the up coming battle with the saiyans that shall visit earth),Ernie hudson[black monk that talked to roshi] as Mr.Popo,Kame(good side of piccollo),the door in the mystics temple that leads to Kame’s hide out in the sky,how chi chi ends up working for the RED RIBBON CORPORATION in an internship programme, how Goku is set off into finding out his true origins by looking for the dragonballs, lord piccollo doing the same thing again, arrival of raditz, nappa and most importantly Vegeta.

now, bringing back the hair on goku will be vital in order to give that saiyan unique look because we all know that saiyans are not human. and guys,do you remember the intro of this movie that said OOZARU WAS A SLAVE OF LORD PICCOLLO 2000 YEARS AGO? well i think its safe to say that when Oozaru is in transformation mode that it PAUSES growth of the pre-transformation( baby goku)until its weakened in battle, then it can go back to its original form e.g,{ cartoon series} piccollo training gohan.

i thought about the detail of the saiyan race and how it strongly resembled another cultural race here in South Africa called the Zulu’s. this mother F*s are stubbon as hell! so i thought it would be logical if a saiyan boy would grow a tail when they reach age 20. the tail will be sign of aduliscent and maturing of power. but the catch to this bit is that the tail is a weakness when pulled or squeezed to those who havent train more to obtain more power that the ones theyre body has produced for them.

now guys i hope this will also encourage you aswell so that we can all work together to create our own script and story in order to be satisfied with what we grew up with and loved if fox wont give a shit about what we think an feel about theyre actions on this beautiful toon that has impacted our lives for the better. i love you guys for not giving up on this toon, for the mere fact you are online gere leaving a comment just goes to show how passionate we are in what we believe in. keep on rocking guys.

Well i think he would of clocked on when she stole the dragonballs a set a fire with her laser guns to make sure they dont get back and seeing her fight with his girl. But still what you said was true goku wasn’t selfish but did show a selfish attitude.

@nanjiro: Well, the great thing about dragonball z is that its got unlimited potential, like The batman movies. I mean so far there have been what 1, 2, 3…, 6 batman movies now!? The ones that came after Batman Returns: BM & Robin, BM Forever, Both sucked! But despite those last two horrible movies, they still brought Batman back and now the Batman franchise is doing better than it ever has before! Just because someone decided to film them from a different approach and perspective.

Maybe in a few years, someone will comeback to Dragonball and reshoot it the way the fans want it. And even if no one makes another live dragonball, theres always still the cartoon show and video games.

And I doubt Fox made this movie just to anger OG DBZ fans, they did exactly that though. They just took the wrong approach to this movie from the very start. Fox took a PG-13/-17 story and turned it into a PG rated “Power Ranger-esque” kids movie. I think the Producers had no idea what to do with this franchise so they just made it so cheap that if the movie wasnt a success, at least they would make their money back in Asia. GOD I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW WHOS IDEA IT WAS TO MAKE THIS MOVIE PG!!!!!! What an IDIOT!!!!

@STEPHEN: I know! I mean thats what I personally LOVED about Dragonball, was the character growth and deep shit that you’ll only appreciate when you take the time to break it down. And the most beautiful part of it all was that it was a total accident! Toriyama never knew how far the story was going to go. Read any interview and he says “I never had an ending planned, and I certainly don’t see Goku getting old” (ok I’m paraphrasing, sorry I don’t have the interview in front of me atm). So it just grew bigger, and bigger and bigger!! The best type of writing is loose kind of writing (or at least I think so).

@Andrew: Dude what are you talking about? Are you people forgetting that Dragonball and Dragonball Z were once one LONG manga series? Thats how it was originally made, and LATER ON someone decided to separate them because I assume they felt it would’ve made a ridiculously long TV series. I THINK, like 90% sure, that’s how it went down. I used to be SO into Akira Toriyama and I found out all there was to know about him and DB’s origin, but its been a few years now so I can’t totally trust my memory. And what do you mean DB was crap?! It’s was most original story EVER told in the history of anime for its time!!! It’s iconic now, and so many stories are like it, but it was one of the first! How can you say it was crap?!

@Burter: And your right, the DB franchise can totally be treated the same way Batman was. The only thing is I don’t want to wait around another 10 yrs for someone to do it right! lol I want a better one sooner than later, though that probably won’t happen! GAWD this movie was such a tease!

  12. Zgirl
    June 1st, 2009 at 12:38 | #12

Scratch what I said about not being sure (i don’t know why i second guess myself)!!!! I KNOW that originally DB and DBZ were one manga, and my proof is in any of the DBZ mangas, front cover. I’m quoting here from volume 3 of DBZ “In the original Japanese edition, DRAGON BALL and DRAGON BALL Z are known collectively as the 42-volume series DRAGON BALL. The English DRAGON BALL Z was originally volumes 17-42 of the Japanese DRAGON BALL.” SO THERE!! lol Just incase anyone wants to argue that, and for those of you who didn’t know…well now you know (though I thought that was common knowledge). I mean why do you think none of Toriyama’s art work (I’m talkin original art work in the DBZ manga, not the shit they feed you in the anime) say Dragon Ball Z?

Honestly, so many people don’t realize that DragonBall is so much more than just some awesome series…Toriyama’s DB is equivalent to Walt Disney’s Snow White! Both of these men changed their field of work FOREVER! You can’t think “animation” and not think of “Walt Disney”, just like you can’t think “Japanese anime/manga” and not think “Akira Toriyama”!! Also, both of their stories are technically adaptations. Disney never wrote the original fairy tale “Snow White”, just like Toriyama never wrote the original Chinese legend “Journey to the West”, but once both of these men got their hands on those stories, they turned them inside out and made it their own!! Now they’re iconic!!! And their art styles, COMPLETELY unique for their time!! You’ll never see something more monumentally ingenious ever again!! But did Fox realize this? NO! Do all fans realize this? NO! Especially the lil ones, but obviously I can’t blame them because I never realized this either until I got my hands on the manga. So to say that DB is crap, you just clearly don’t understand what your witnessing (and neither does Fox!!)…and please don’t interpret that as me telling EVERY fan that they HAVE to LOOOOVE DB, I’m just saying show some respect. And I’m sorry if I ever sound pissed, I just love Toriyama lol

but honestly, i dont see any studio putting 150 million or even 100 million into a dragonball movie after this failure any time soon,, hopefully someone does though

It has tons of potential the cartoons are humour an explosive fighting the potential is endless. They can make tons of great movies if they did it right. The only thing your not going to find a list actors that will bring the characters to life though. I still believe Jon Foo would be a great Goku. I just wish a studin really would take a chance or fox would learn from this an see how the fan base for DB is phonominal an put money into it. If they made it the way it should be you couldnt go wrong with DBZ movies. Such great stories to be told.

I hate the fact that movie studios feel they HAVE to change things to appeal to the american people. they are ignorant. everyone needs to understand something…we like dragonball for it being dragonball. why change it? make the movie like the anime. most fans seen the tv show first. then they went out and bought the mangas. most fans hate this attempt of making a DB movie. and we all can agree that the movie could have been made better. i am completely confident that DB and DBZ and DBGT could be made into something great and spectacular.

  18. June 1st, 2009 at 20:26 | #18

It would of been worse if they made it close to anime and besides why should it only appeal to the fans? what about everyone else? I mean sure it would have made tons of money from the fan base but it wouldn’t gain anymore fans……And what about all the people who’ve seen the show or read the manga millions of times wouldn’t it be BORING and PREDICTABLE to them if it was the same? I’m not saying DBE is the greatest thing ever but it’s certainly not the worst……The concept of it was fine how it was handled and executed is what made less than stellar for most people.

if they make a sequel to this abomination—you gotta ask yourself—what are they gonna do when goku turns super saiyan???? are they gonna change the way his hair looks just because its a movie…just to appeal to a mass audiance? F*** the masses!!! i want goku’s super saiyan hair to look EXACTLY the same as it did in the anime. just make it look realistic. its possible, and it would be awesome. the art style of akira toriyama is beautiful. i want the crazy hair. i cant believe they changed bulma’s hair. that alone made the movie a failure to me. part of the reason DBZ fans like the show is because of the art style. take for example when vageta killed himself to try to kill fat boo. the animation was beautiful. i want blue bulma hair dammit!!!! just think about Raditz, lol. that would be so freakin’ awesome, lol. im hoping for a REAL attempt at making a respectable DBZ movie. thats why im so passionate. i want a DBZ movie. but not like this…not like this. believe me…the hair thing is important. i know i cant speak for everyone, but i know dbz fans love the crazy hair.

    @KEOLA:

Brotha, but it exists a word called “equilibrium”. And technically it´s impossible to show the same things of the anime/manga.

I`ve read a lot of fanfics, even more simple, even changing things (I changed many thing in my story), but the stroies I`ve read are 50x better than dbE.

And, do you really think someone can make a worse movie xB? I do, I know who: the same Wong and the same f´n fox xD

  21. June 1st, 2009 at 21:06 | #21

Ask yourself this did the hair make them who they are or was it their personalities? now yes they changed bulma’s one a little bit but it was ok (for me) they all got their personalities tweaked but I found it to be alright…..To be honest I would like a second film but I’d rather they didn’t make it so everyone wouldn’t have to deal with this bullshit all over again…..I mean dealing with people who thought they were better than everyone else because they condemned this movie prior to seeing it or the people who think they deserve a great movie because they are fans of the source and everyone else who is not one should get the shaft.

  22. June 1st, 2009 at 21:10 | #22

@DPA: What are you talking about? I don’t know how that applies to what I said all I said was if they made it close to the source the movie would be worse than DBE IMO anyways….. I didn’t say nothing about fanfics or whatever.

i dont give a F*** if the movie studios make money or not. they’re in the entertaining biz. of course i understand they have to make money to make good movies. duh. but i dont waste thought on that shit. was this movie entertaining? didnt think so. and so what if its predictable. it may be predictable but deffinetly not boring. the action will make sure of that. i got all the DBZ fighing games and they re-tell the same story over and over. but i bought them didnt i. oh and by the way…they only made this movie because of the fans. so make it to please the fans. its a very simple concept. if it wasnt for us DB fans they would have never even concidered makeing this movie.

im gonna go as far to say a realistic DBZ movie would have to be rated R. look at all the blood. i heard a rumor…they want to make any movie with smoking in it to be rated R. doesnt mean theres gonna be sex and profanity. just becasue people smoke cigarettes. i think a “true to the source” movie of DBZ would have to be rated R. remeber when Frieza got cut in half? will that make it into a PG or even PG-13 movie? i doubt it.

  24. June 1st, 2009 at 21:22 | #24

How do you know they made this movie for the fans? all I heard is that they wanted to try and make a film for everyone and if they really wanted to make this for the fans they would have made it so many years ago with hugh jackman as goku and it would have been a DBZ movie……….I don’t even know why I bother commenting here don’t get me wrong the DB franchise is very entertaining but some of it’s fans just kill it for me almost makes me ashamed to say I like it.

@The Seeker: Honestly the hair? How do you make a style like Toriyama’s real but same to the source? You can’t, cuz he’s a visionary and his art is too stylized to make EXACTLY the same in real life. Who gives a F*** about the hair? That DOES NOT make a good movie. I’m sorry, but when I heard a DB movie was being made, the last thing on my mind WAS THE HAIR! I was much more concerned about the story being made for kids…which is was! Which makes me SO mad but w/e. And no this movie was SO not made for the fans because as soon as they started promoting it (which hey didn’t do much of that either), they took the approach that it was being made for a NEW audience. However I still believe you could’ve compromised between the two types of audiences. And you said that the action scenes would’ve taken care of a movie that was predictable and more true to the original; well don’t you think if the action scenes had been better in THIS movie, it would’ve taken care of the story line that so many people didn’t agree with? Honestly had this movie been MADE (not written) differently, would you people still give two shits about Goku’s friggin hair?

  28. nanjiro
    June 2nd, 2009 at 09:03 | #28

@KEOLA: what makes you think that making it appealing for the fans automatically makes it non apealling to other audiences??

and what you are saying is ridiculous, making it more faithful to dragonball will make it a worse movie?? this movie is only faithful in the title to dragonball (and not even there, they screwed up the title as well with evolution), most character personalities are very different from the source, specially goku (the most important one)
and lets not get into the plot,,, i dont even have to say how ridiculous, filled with plot holes it was,,

this movie represents absolutely nothing about dragonball,, and thats why it failed so badly

the only reason it made more than 50 million is because the name includes the word dragonball on it,,if it were called something else, it wouldnt have made half of what it did

I understand that the hair is not a big deal. Im basicly speaking for myself, and how i would like to see dragonball. im just giving my opinion.
*The story is the most important thing. But there are certain things that makes dragonball dragonball.
*There should have been powering up. now, i know they dont REALLY power up in DB. but it should have at least been introduced. thats, like, my fav parts, when they get pissed and power up. thats key. they are strongest when they’re inraged.
*the auras…with the proper colors for the right characters. Dragonball has a certain look to it, they should have kept it that way.
*Krillin is one of my fav people in DB. i dont understand why they chose not to have Krillin in the film. its because of krillin goku becomes super saiyan. he’s, like, on par with goku as far as heart goes, and giving his all.
*Yamcha should’ve had fighting scense. and he should have used the wolf fang fist. its so lame that they dont have the characters use their signature moves.
*bulmas hair should have been blue. i saw the pics of rossum with the blue hair. that should have been just a first attempt at getting it right. its insane to think it cant be done right. it can. they just didnt try. THEY DIDNT TRY. bulmas hair in the movie was ugly and unattractive.

there are things in dragonball that are just too holy to change.

this movie was not made for the fans. i wish it was. but FOX spat in the face of all DB fans.

on a lighter note…i liked every actor they chose. they were awesome. its a shame they had to be apart of this failure. the potential is sooo great. but FOX just said, “F*** it! its a kids movie, who cares.”

now…i admit that im putting too much thought into this. and maybe i should worry about more important things. but whats a fan to do?

its been quite a rollercoaster of hopes and worries for us all. at least we can all agree that we’re all DBZ fans. and everyone has different reasons why they like DB and DBZ. Goku was a role model for me in my younger days. i became a better person because i looked up to goku. But VAGETA is my favorite. lol.

if vageta were around he’d most likely blow up FOX STUDIOS and not think twice about it, lol. or, on the other hand, he’d probably not even give a rat’s ass about this movie, but would feel embarrised when he sees himself be played by an actor on the big screen. lol. just a guess.

@The Seeker: Theres not going to be a sequel dude. Get over it. The movie flopped, the sales were abysmal. And making a sequel would be financial suicide, and if it did worse sales than what this movie made, fox could go bankrupt if it tanked hard enough.

  36. kame
    June 2nd, 2009 at 16:37 | #36

    @notfordbmovie

dude they could make 9 sequals and survive at 45mil budgets. cuz they will make ther money back and then some. with movies like xmen, and starwars in the bag fox could shut down now and still make millions a year from doing nothing. the sales only sucked in the states, it did well in other countries. if a movie costs 150 million to make and makes 150 million in its theater run time then thats ok, but if DBE costs 45 to make and has made 56 million in its theater runtime thats “abysmal”??????? lol

the movie did what it was supposed to, it cleared its budget mark b4 it hit dvd sales which is now basically all profit. whats funny to me is the responses ppl have. like y didnt yamcha fight or why didnt they have power ups, why wasnt bulmas hair blue. Rly???? wtf is wrong with some of you,y cant u stfu and just watch the movie and be happy som1 took the time to bring a childhood pastime , key word child, to life. ya the studios coulda gave 2 shits about it, but the ppl who worked on it putt alot into it, and alota of u guys r just fuckin plain disrespectful to those guys.

about 90% of what the fans wanted in this movie didnt even exist in the DB world at the time, but here u guys r whining y it wasnt in the movie. they was no knowledge of saiyans, or powering up, or any shit like that. THAT IS DBZ or much later down the manga line. DB was a comedy, that later on as the characters evolved and matured, became more about its own mythology and genealogy. the fighting became more intense and the comedy slowly dissipated to only being used during the down time of fights and fill in times.

what im tired of is all the kids out ther whining that this movie looks nothing like the cartoon they all watched, and i know that all they watched is the cartoon cuz thats exactly what they describe over and over again. idc if it was in original dub form or not, its still a cartoon. and basically what u noobs wanted was a movie adapted straight from a cartoon, pathetic. so now its time for some DB 101 heres a link to all the original mangas, in english, starting from book 1 going 36. starting reading, then come back and comment. until then, no more retarded ass comments from ppl who have no idea what ther talking about. if u didnt like the movie, fine stfu and move on. if u did, then u sticking around here and continuing to show ur support is understandable. but the constant comments comming from ppl complaining that it was nothing like ther precious DBZ, DBZ, everything is DBZ. It was fucking DragonBall get over it.

heres the manga links, read up.

I’d be happy if we get a sequel because unlike your idea a reboot will never happen. An I dont feel like waiting 20 years for it to happen. You know nothing so dont say I know there wont be a sequel because you dont know jack.

If a reboot happened in the next three years okay I could deal with that. I’ve waited to long for a dragonball franchise I dont want to wait years an years for another.

They don’t have to do a reboot, James Wong said him self that dragonball z is very very different to dragonball, so they can completely change the look and the feel of the the next movie (dragonball: Reboot), the first movie was an introduction to the characters like Justin chatwin said, but we all know if they wanted make a sequel :P the first movie had to do extremely well!, to do so, and we all know this film flopped heavily, so i don’t think we will be getting a sequel. 8O

@kame: Why does that site only go to chapter 36? Either way I agree and people who ONLY saw the show need to open their eyes. But I already had my rant and rave on that subject lol
@moin: And thats totally true. Facts are they got through the bullshit with the 1st one and now you can open the door to those who only want to see DBZ (which I like both so w/e), buuuut who knows what Fox is thinking after the numbers rolled in….oh wait I forgot Fox has no brain, they can’t think!

@The Seeker: And if those are “make or break” issues for you, than thats fine. But I’m honestly curious, had there been better action, and well thought through plot, would the things like the hair or um whatever else you mentioned, be as big of an issue? I’m honestly just wondering

Well you sound extremely stupid with your preschool economics, if you go to Walmart and buy something for $20, does that mean that Mars keeps all of the money you paid? no… it just means that out of the price you pay, Walmart gets to keep one part of it and the manufacturer gets to keep another part, however the manufacturer usually has to pay manufacturing, distribution and advertising costs. The profit any company makes isn’t the same as the amount of money they receive.

The BO numbers are the amount of money theaters received, usually for international releases the studio receives 40-60% of the total (depends on the expectations for the movie and the negotiations with each country), and domestically it means 50-80% on the first weekend, and then it drops 10% each week. Out of the amount they receive they have to cover the budget, pay administrative fees, taxes, and promotional costs. Check this article out and you’ll understand why the 56 mill don’t mean 56 mill but a lot less.

    http://www.cracked.com/article_16662_5-innovative-ways-hollywood-screwing-you-over.html

So there is no way that with 56 mill at the BO, they have managed to cover the expenses, that is why everyone says it is a flop.

And seriously, there is no way DBE compares to DB, DB made me laugh my ass of, DBE just made me facepalm like crazy. I just feel that they wanted to get it out of the way and hopefully the name would just rake in the millions, they didn’t expect that a bad movie would just bomb.

The only bo I smell in here is you, Kame’s statement was far superior to your BS one. I’m not saying the movie was a huge success but it never had a chance to be. It should of been ten times better but could of been ten times worse.Anyway you fail with your little statement.

@Wingo: Wow that article was REALLY informative. I never knew any of that stuff! Especially the whole box office thing and the rating system. Now I know Fox totally f***ed themselves with this movie! Had they had more confidence in the franchise and done the appropriate research, they would’ve put in half an ass of effort and made a decent movie, and in theory, could have made a huge profit! But the barfed up this crap and knew it sucked and now they’ll never touch it again!….fantastic? lol Reality sucks ass, but either way thanks for the info I guess

it “flopped” in the US ONLY! there will be a sequel. They may not have made a huge profit but they made a profit. That’s enough to carry on. Let’s be honest, even though FOX/director etc were shit with DBE (i still enjoyed it but ye, coulda been better), they know their mistakes now, they know what they have to do with a sequel. A sequel, if done right (they know it has to be done right, they can’t afford for it to be done wrong) will make them millions and making millions of profit will encourage them to do better and better.
I know there will be a sequel, even if FOX don’t do it or a different director is hired. I will stand by that. I just don’t expect it until after 2011 tbh.

    ERRRRRRRRRM Your wrong

This movie bombed in nearly every country it was released in especially in the U.K and considering how much promotion was in Japan it bombed there to miserably. This movie bombed alot in europe and even in australlia.

And how do you know there is going to be a sequel?
If you think of it getting a sequel right know would be against all odds reasons why….. Fans hated it, Critics criticised as far as they possibly could and the movie bombed miserably in Box Ofiice. Nothing there sounds good. Plus japan had the movie sometime ago if there was a sequel dont you think japan would of heard of it already?

Dont get it twisted i do want a sequel and there is still a chance but that chance is very slim plus why would fox incest more money on a non-profitable film and no the movie was not profitable definetly not for a sequel anyway most movies get double there budget then make the sequel. We failed to get 10million on excess to our budget, plus that money dosent even go all to fox.
