IGN’s Dragonball: Evolution DVD Review

IGN has reviewed Dragonball: Evolution’s DVD, giving it a 7/10 overall.

If you missed the film in the theaters, this is a good chance to make your own decision about whether it’s a faithful adaptation of the anime or stands alone on its own as a feature film. This release is slim on extras, but the technical presentation of the film is first rate.

Sadly, it seems the only extras worth checking out are some of the deleted scenes and the gag reel. Read the full review by clicking here. To pre-order the DVD on Amazon, click here.

    Hey, whoever wrote this review was pretty kind. I would’ve bought the DVD regardless of overall grade though. Haha. Still am.

    WAY overrated. What are they thinking? I’d say Fox paid them off, but then again, they’re owned by Fox’s parent company.

    I say they need to scrap what they did and take it back to square 1. don’t make it the events of Dragon Ball but take it a few years afterwards but before DBZ, Leave the Piccolo stuff in flash backs, have the reluctant good guy thing going on with him. AND FOR GOD SAKES GET AN NEW DIRECTOR!!!! the mistake that got them 7/10, to us fans was that GOKU was freakin what 8 years older than he should have been (and Canadian, but hey Goku did look white in the series), But I will say that’s as good as they could have without a fan or two giving details when writing scripts and getting actors…….

    @D I don’t know if fans should necessarily get involved with any movie, DB or other franchises. That’s not to say there isn’t a fan out there who isn’t creative or has valid ideas, but majority of fans don’t know how or what to cut down. I guess a balance of fan writers and outsiders is the best idea, because fans will know what is most important while a non-fan is unbiased and knows what to omit, without feeling guilty. Thats my opinion anyway. I would personally prefer people who are unbiased working on movies like these because they’ll be able to take a classic story and make in more interesting…well not the people who worked on DBE but OTHER people tend to do a good job lol.

  16. July 8th, 2009 at 20:00 | #16

    @Zgirl

    Well im no suprised about this review since ign kinda enjoyed the movie so whatever dont care I’ll buy the DVD anyway.

    Hey Zgirl I miss the old site :( oh well. Ive seen Transformers 2 again,I will say NOTHING will reach the awesome-ness of that movie. But I still like DBE if I enjoyed a movie thats all that matters to me.But they should still move on to Z since its easier to do than DB its just less stupid stuff like (talking animals and dinosaurs etc..) people watch DBZ for the action but i think they need a good story cause DBZ story after the frieza saga just gotten repetitive so it wouldn’t be exactly like the show and just something different but good, but after all that it’s likely not gonna be as good as TF2 I like DBE but even if a DBZ movie comes out it cant top the UNREACHABLE AWESOME-NESS that is TF2. Im sorry i keep taking about TF2 but i just love that movie.

    July 11th, 2009 at 12:18 | #18

    @t-moore Omg I was wondering when you were gonna say something! I miss the site too but only cuz I can’t remember what I’ve said and I hate repeating myself lol!

    Anyhoo, yea I understand what you mean. They’re just two different types of movies and its hard to beat giants fighting robots! lol No matter what action a DBZ movie will get, its still only people fighting people, while TF2 just brought brawls to a whole new level.

    Oh by the way, I watched those DBZ abridged…funniest shit EVER!!!

  19. July 11th, 2009 at 21:42 | #19

    @Zgirl

    I told you that DBZ Abridged was funny and of course I’ve knew that a DBE reference was coming lol.As for a DBZ movie IF its gonna happen which is unlikely IMO It shouldn’t be as dark as TDK it would be THE worst thing they can do to that movie I would say just make it an action packed movie with some story that makes sense it doesn’t have to be a blockbuster just be very entertaining.

    What do you think how a DBZ movie should be made?

  20. Zgirl
    July 14th, 2009 at 06:13 | #20

    @t-moore The DBE reference was one of the best parts! lol And Nappa…friggin LOVED Nappa :P

    Yea if anything is gonna happen with this franchise, they should definitely attempt to get it as dark or intense as TDK. Quite frankly, its not that hard to do! lol The DBZ story line, 90% of the time was very dark anyway. All I wanna see is a movie that actually feels like a movie aaand not some Disney special! And of course, you gotta have better fight scenes cuz its DBZ…how can you omit that!? lol

    And your right, it doesn’t matter if its gonna be some huge blockbuster hit, but to be honest I think if they put some effort, it could be anyway.

  21. July 14th, 2009 at 12:12 | #21

    @Zgirl

    I dont really want it to be dark as TDK for batman i would say that its easier for it because Batman being dark is its M.O. But DBZ isnt really that dark (until later in the frieza saga) it had some dark moments but its not fully dark it was more serious than DB but still had some funny moments TDK had nearly 0% funny moments,One of the reasons I liked TF2 was the comedy and people said that movie didnt have storyline BUT when you look at it the storyline in that movie was kinda dark and very simple to follow people were just looking at shit that blows up in that movie and not pay attention to the storyline in that particular movie.Granted that TDK and DBZ are different from TF2.But if they make a DBZ movie I wouldn’t want it to be like the show 100% cause that show gotten repetitive after the frieza saga (oh look a treat came 2 earth we have to stop it again and again) lol if they do what TF2 did was have a good story but dont let it overcome the action which was the reason ppl watch DBZ its would be nice but like TF2 it has to be entertaining

    In my opinion TDK was the best I’ve seen
    And TF2 is the most entertaining movie I’ve seen

    You can make a good movie but all that matters to me is entertainment if i come out of a movie bored i would be pissed lol.
    Ive saw TDK twice great the 1st time but the 2nd time i just wasn’t as entertained and was a little bored,
    TF2 1st time was great and 2nd time i was entertained as i was the 1st time.

    When it comes down 2 it critics know nothing and entertainment is all that matters IMO

    I hope you know what i mean sorry i was long winded. lol

  22. Zgirl
    July 15th, 2009 at 05:43 | #22

    @t-moore Yea TDK and DBZ don’t have the same level of “darkness” or w/e you wanna call it. lol And you can’t make those movies similar because each story needs a “look” that matches. So being super dark and serious in TDK was important, and a DBZ movie could use some of that, but not in the same way because the story does have some lighthearted moments. I think thats why I liked TF2 because it had a nice balance of both, which is truer to the story. And I don’t care what anyone says, TF2 HAD a story line; in fact I felt the 2nd one had a better story than the first, soo I don’t understand what these critics are talking about! lol

    And you’re totally right about the difference between entertaining movies and just fantastic movies. Not every single movie made has to be “oscar worthy” or a masterpiece because sometimes an audience just wants to be entertained for an hour or two! lol Who cares if in 20 odd years a movie will be written off? The important thing to do (with certain movies, not all) is give your audience some fun and excitement, and if the movie ends up a classic or not, who cares?!

    Having said that, I do feel SOME movie companies (not gonna mention any names or anything ;P) have taken the theory of entertaining movies a LITTlE too far, to the point where the only movies being produced are 2nd class romantic comedies and/or family kid friendly crap. lol

  23. July 15th, 2009 at 07:24 | #23

    @Zgirl
    Also in a live action experience its ok to listen to the fans but i would just put effort on there cause hey there are some TF fans that hate the TF movie ( I dont know why they would hate my favorite movie off all time) lol you can’t please everyone TF and TF2 appealed to everyone its not a little kid movie but i would say its ok for 13 year olds and up, and yes entertaing movie can go too far like The Mario Bros movie (granted it was the 1st live action movie of a game or show, thats not the magic begins) It was entertaining but it is a bad movie but again it was the 1st offical live action movie so ppl could let that slide.DBE appealed to some fans of the show (like myself)lol and little kids its you could just give the fans the movie they want BUT it would look freakin retarded in its case for DB and i dont want to see talking animals or dinosaurs.DBE in a sense it was a bad movie but its far more entertaining than dissapointing x-men origins wolverine, and the biggest letdown in movie history IMO spiderman 3. If I was bored in a movie then i would say that Ive wasted my money DBE I wasn’t bored, Wolverine was boring as hell in between the action and the story was uniteresting, and SM3 just pissed me off in the end.For a movie to be truly successful it has to appeal to everyone not just the fans of the source material. Cause even if just the fans watch DBE it wont make a difference and wont be successful cause the other people just wont give a shit.

    CAN SOME MOVIE COMPANY PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE MAKE DRAGONBALL OR DRAGONBALL Z. IT CAN’T GO DOWN LIKE THAT SO PLEASE REBOOT IT. MICHEAL BAY,MICHEAL BAY…..

  25. Zgirl
    July 16th, 2009 at 19:49 | #25

    @t-moore Yea exactly. Thats why I think the best approach (in my opinion) is to have a balance of fan input, and outsider ideas. Someone with no attachment to the story can think of new things that it may need, and won’t be afraid to cut out certain unimportant things. However a fan knows which things can/should not be touched, but they may not be bold enough to think of something entirely different. As you said, it needs to appeal to any audience in order to be successful, so a fan based movie just wont cut it. But even if they made the perfect film that is widely accepted, there will always be the odd person who isn’t satisfied.

    And spiderman 3 was SUCH a let down!!! I don’t even know the original story (I only watched the cartoon sometimes) and I was just like, wtf why was this so shitty!!

  26. July 17th, 2009 at 11:28 | #26

    @Zgirl

    there are few movies that piss me off, Spiderman 3 was one of them that and rush hour 3 lol

  27. Zgirl
    July 21st, 2009 at 09:09 | #27

    @t-moore
    yeaa rush hour 3 was pretty bad. I just saw the new Harry Potter, and I gotta say it was a bit boring too.

  28. July 21st, 2009 at 16:56 | #28

    @Zgirl

    I heard that the new Harry Potter movie was good and pretty deep.I probably will see that movie. BUT im really waiting for G.I Joe The rise of cobra that movie looks AWESOME not TF2:ROTF AWESOME but it still looks badass.Im not a G.I Joe fan but I seen the show a few times and they had a movie that was on adult swim that was really good.

  29. Zgirl
    July 21st, 2009 at 18:03 | #29

    @t-moore Omg I need to see that movie! My bro was waay more into G.I.Joe than I was, but it looks pretty decent.
    Yea the Harry Potter movie was a good set up for the next ones, but it was just ok for me. And I never read the books soo I’m a total outsider lookin in, and as a movie, it was just ok.

  30. July 22nd, 2009 at 16:10 | #30

    Yeah after G.I.Joe theres nothing else that im interested in that sucks.Im not a Harry Potter fan but i like all the other movies i didn’t see the new one yet though it seems about as dark as the last 5th movie, I hope that its not as bad as the most dissapointing movie of all time Spiderman 3 or as boring as rush hour 3 (since i didnt laugh once in that movie which pissed me off).Spiderman 3 sucked so bad I was more entertained with DBE than that movie.

    By the way the guys that did DBZ abridged did 2 of the movies, Deadzone Abridged and The World’s Strongest Abridged check them out, and also both 1st parts of the vids are muted because of youtube bullcrap. But the are both as funny as the DBZ episodes they did those movies before the series. Enjoy and laugh your butt off lol

    @t-moore Not gonna lie, I think I enjoyed DBE slightly more than Spiderman 3 too. Just because you could make fun of it while your watchin it, but Spiderman was just saaad.

    It don’t matter cuz I know how many toes a fish has! lmao omg those were AWESOME! lmao

  33. July 23rd, 2009 at 21:21 | #33

    @Zgirl
    Krillin Owned Count over 9,000!!!!

    ok thats not funny anymore i know

    It seems that some movies just suck after the dreaded 3rd movie of a trilogy i hope Transformers wont do that but then again i dont think it would be a bust since its GIANT FREAKIN ROBOTS TEARING EACH OTHER APART!!! It never gets old, giant robots are the best.

  34. Zgirl
    July 30th, 2009 at 11:12 | #34

    @t-moore I LOVE the krillin owned count, cuz its soo true :P !! lmao

    Yea you have a point there. The only trilogy that I personally think was successful throughout was the Lord of the Rings series. I don’t know about other people, but I loved all three and thought they were all at the same level of awesome-ness (you gotta love my language skills :P ). I would hope and predict that the Transformers series will have the same outcome, but you never know these days :P

  35. July 31st, 2009 at 07:55 | #35

    @Zgirl hey what about Star Wars or they dont count since they have 6 movies LOTR is a good trilogy boring at times since there all so long but still good

  36. OldZFan
    August 3rd, 2009 at 16:14 | #36

    I don’t think they had a big budget for this movie. Yes, it wasn’t up to standards that the fans wanted, but it was entertaining for what they did with it. Could have been sooooooo much better. I do agree that someone should pick this up and run with the sequals much better with a different cast…..especially Goku….the guy is an ok actor, but I really expected a Asian or Japanese actor for that role….and wtf is up with the guy who played Yamcha…..his face looks like he ran head on into a truck…come on. The girls where cast pretty good and they did an ok acting job. I like Chow Yun as Roshi, but make his hair white and put some cool sunglasses on him. Like I said, it was entertaining, but a bit dissapointing on casting and storyline. Someone get MNight to make this better….he’s probably too busy with doing the Avatar Trilogy though. We need more and better special effects. Like I said, you can tell they were a bit budget limited, but did what they could with what they had. At least someone did something. I enjoyed the dragonball storyline from the animated series. It’s interesting to see it made into a real live movie…..as will the Avitar trilogy.

    August 6th, 2009 at 12:18 | #37

    @t-moore Oh yea I forgot Star Wars! Its AWESOME but its got 6 movies soo I guess it don’t count lol. I could see how some parts would be boring for LOTR but I personally like it when longass movies have a little down time, ONLY because you can afford to do that in 3 hours. lol

    YEAH MOST OF YOU don’t even know a good movie when u see it!!! I thought the movie was AWESOME!!!! JUSTIN CHATWIN was just as cocky as GOKU in the cartoon series…And believe me my hubby is the biggest dragonball fan…we own every single dragonball,dragonballZ,and GT!!!Nothing compares really to the original BUT they did a good job…only a few things didn’t add up to the anime….But you can’t make it exactly the same….
