Dragonball Evolution’s Real Budget

August 27th, 2009 Leave a comment Go to comments

At the convention Monster Mania, James Marsters let slip during a Q&A that DB:E’s real budget was a pathetic $30 million. That’s right, Fox lied to us. Twice. It wasn’t a $100 million dollar tent pole or a $50 million dollar movie, it was a cheapie, costing even below Twilight’s mediocre budget of $37 million to produce. What a surprise.

    @Jesse J You never know, I thought Pirates of the Caribbean was good and it’s an adventure type movie, and has many epic moments…then again, Disney’s becoming more sellout-ish over the years so you’re probably right.

    It seems to me that you contradict yourself in your last post. You actually prove that Fox is cheap when it wants to be cheap, but then go on and say, “Fox is always cheap, another studio would be better”. As you mentioned -and I haven’t forgotten it, that was actually my point as well- when they have a good director in their hands, such as Cameron, they are not cheap at all. When they believe in a franchise, like in X-Men, they are not cheap again (75 mill in 2000 is roughly 94 mill in today’s money, not outstanding, but more than 3 times DBE’s reported budget). The Fantastic four movies had a budget of 100 mill for the first and 130 mill for the second (I’ll be damned if Fantastic 4 had anywhere near Dragonball’s fanbase worldwide, before the movies were made). So, if Fox had any faith in the Dragonball franchise, they would have dug a lot deeper into their pockets, but this clearly was not the case.

    They also work with all kinds of directors, from disgraceful like Paul W.S. Anderson, to totally indifferent like Tim Story, to promising like Mathieu Kassovitz, to well respected like Ridley Scott, George Lucas (admittedly not so respected any more) and James Cameron. Peter Jacksoon used to be a cheap director, as all directors are before their breakthrough. Brett Ratner is a hack, but Transformers’ director Michael Bay is probably the biggest hack in cinema history, so I don’t seem to get your point here.

    This information makes me OUTRAGED at Fox (cheap %@&#*$!!)

    @Zgirl
    30 mill huh? well…could have fooled me lol,but im not mad at all i ike DB/DBZ but why should i take it personally I maybe a fan but after all its only a movie,the only thing i care about is being entertained thats it and nothing more it could be a 10 bucks budget lmao but if im entertained thats all that matters to me,the most is not the best ive seen or the most entertaining but it kept me from being bored unlike X-men origins and didnt piss me off like spiderman 3 the only tim I get pissed at a movie is when im bored and thay doesnt happen a whole lot…we thats just me,and whats up its been a while

    @gram18

    i never contradict myself in my last post. yes i said FOX is cheap but i said FOX Studios should hire a good director to do a great Dragonball. and if FOX dont want to spend money on Dragonball they should just let the rights go to another studio i.e. Paramount Pictures reason why they will spend alot of money on the project, ILM will most likely do the special effects and promotion machine for the movie will be way better then FOX.

    James Cameron and Peter Jacksoon i know they used to be cheap directors but they have prove to the film industry they have become amazing directors. James Wong is so far away to be a good director his a rubbish director. James Wong movies feels like a straight to dvd movies.

    i know Fantastic Four movies had a huge budget but look what happen now FOX wants to reboot Fantastic Four.

    you might be right that Michael Bay is the biggest hack in cinema but you forget Michael Bay knows how to make a action packed movie. plus he did give us iconic movies Bad Boys 1 and 2 and The Rock.

    i know you defending FOX but they have fallen hard in the recent years last year FOX biggest hit was Horton Hears a Who!. the major problem with FOX is Thomas Rothman who been fucking up everything at FOX.

    @shadowman
    Oh, no, I’m not trying to defend Fox at all, they have a huge part on DBE’s failure, but they are not the only ones to blame. I’m just saying that the name Fox doesn’t automatically translate to crappy movies, as many good movies has come out from them (some of my favorites actually, alien\star wars\predator etc.) though the quality has been rapidly declining the past few years.

    I insist that the main problem was them not having any faith to the Dragonball franchise and I agree 100% with you that unless they change their attitude towards it, it would be better if another studio took over. If on the other had they take it more seriously and invest real money and effort, I’m sure they can do just as good as any studio.

    James Wong is not spectacularly bad as a director, he’s had some solid hits on limited budget, as did Cameron with Piranchas and Jackson with many almos B-grade movies before lord of the rings. Who knows, maybe given a chance, he could do better as well.
    P.S. I wouldn’t call Bad Boys iconic movies, not by a long shot.

    @t-moore
    Heh, it’s funny, you think transformers, which bored me to death, is awesome and I thought Spiderman 3, Terminator 4 and Wolverine which disappointed you, thoroughly entertaining. I think the only movie we actually agree on is Dragonball Evolution! :P

  7. September 1st, 2009 at 11:47 | #7

    @gram18
    Hey man I like Terminator 4,its just Wolverine and Spider-man that pissed me off.But yeah DBE I enjoyed but i knew it was a bad movie but it was intended for kids,my co-worker seen it and he enjoyed it but also known that it was a bad movie,but at least it didnt bore me and it was entertaining.But i still stand that i Love transformers and G.I.Joe.But yeah its kinda funny that we agree on DBE at least we were civilized when you say you didn’t like transformers im like well its a matter of opinion if you dont like it you dont like it what ever happened to respecting ones opinion.Except that stormsink on youtube who defended DBE like hell yet gave shitty reviews to TF2 and GI Joe and then talking shit about TF2 when some other guy on youtube say “get off TDKs dick cause Tf2 and TDK are too different to compare TDK was great but they are way too different” (so yeah I take back that comparison i made a while ago lol :lol: ) I men i like DBE and all but both GI JOE and TF2 are WAY better than DBE…but again thats just me lol.

    @gram18

    well bad boys was iconic for a Micheal Bay movie lol, thats one of his good movies anyway.

    the problem with FOX is that Thomas Rothman has made the film studio to be a joke.

    yeah Bad Boys was great Bad Boys 2 aint that good but the action in the movie was good rumors of Bad Boys 3. even in Transformer 2 it hinted Bad Boys 3 when Sam painted a 3 on a Bad Boys poster lol

    @t-moore See you’re one of those optimists that can look at this and see it as a good thing. lmao, no you’re right, as long as a movie is entertaining, who cares about the money. And I still blame most of DBE’s problems on that script, and money’s got nothing to do with that so yea its not a big deal. I just think it shows how little Fox cares about this particular franchise, and that’s what bugs me. It’ll be interesting to see what their next move is.

    You wanna know what’s a GREAT movie…Inglorious Bastards! Best movie I saw all summer! Well maybe tied with TF2…but yea amazing!

    @t-moore It was, especially if you like Quentin Tarantino movies! So I finally swallowed my pride and bought DBE today :P . It was a descent deal, I got 3 movies for 30 bucks. Looked like an idiot but w/e I own it now, muhahahahaa

  15. September 3rd, 2009 at 13:18 | #15

    @Zgirl
    Lets see i bought 10 movies for 30 bucks! seriously i did lol :p
    Seven Bruce Lee movies-Enter the Dragon,The Big Boss, Fist of Fury,Way of the Dragon,Game of Death 1 and 2,The Negotiator,And the Matrix Trilogy. Yep im a MASSIVE Bruce Lee fan.

    yeah I like working at the music store,well until that new moon comes out on dvd then i have to watch that for a week like i did with the 1st twilight movie and it will suck just like the 1st movie did.I hate twilght if anything its eye candy for teenage girls and if any guy likes it i respect their opinion but they should get their man card taken away or beaten :lol:

    The economy over here is crazy i had to endure lol.but i do like my job cause i get discounts on music and dvds and games, and yes i got a discount on DBE be4 they jacked the price up to $22.99 lol

    September 4th, 2009 at 14:23 | #20

    @t-moore You should get the medal of honor for putting up with that movie 9x! Btw, its an overrated eye candy as well, not EVERY girl actually thinks that Edward whats his face is hot…mainly speaking bout me lolz. I watched it one day because my cousin swore to me it was a decent movie, and even if I never read the book I’d like it…but maan she was a liar! lol So my sis, our friend and I watched it in a “twilight roast” kind of way, was awesome! lolz

    And fyi, I’m jealous that you can get those kind of deals…10 movies for $30, sooo not fair! lol

  21. September 4th, 2009 at 14:42 | #21

    @Zgirl
    The 10 movies for $30 was because the 5 Bruce Lee movies are in a box set for 10 bucks,matrix trilogy are about $12, the negotiator was about $4, and enter the dragon not with the box set was about $3 bucks so that was about over $27-28 Bucks yeah thats a great deal I get 20% off movies 30% off music and 10% off games, funny thing we never had the DBE musical score and we still dont have it lmao.

  22. Zgirl
    September 6th, 2009 at 11:38 | #22

    @t-moore Hmmm, I wonder why?! lmao jookes
    Now that’s a kickass deal. 30% off music is totally wicked! I’m a CD person, cuz I can’t figure out how out download soo that’s pretty fantastic, and 20% off movies is even better! Shit, the next job I get will totally be a movie/music place! lmao

    all this movie needed was a better script and a HELLUVA lot better fight scenes.they shoulda got john foo or tony jaa or even BOTH to be in DBE. hey their movis aent high budget but hey the fighting is amazing. well jon foo is gonna star as jin kazama and ive seen his vids on yt. i hope he can pull off the karate/michima style martial arts too. im more surprisd to find out about the Gamer movie. dat movie had a budget of $12 mil. none of the actors had a lotta martial arts experience except chow yun fat. dt pissed me off too. 30 mil budget and made 57 mil worldwide = moderate success. i smell reboot. FUCK the sequel. do dat shit over and THIS time do it right. let it start from how planet vegeta ended THEN into the dragon ball universe. ppl need to know the series like star wars and actually be extremely popular.now when i say ppl need to know it dat well i mean the ppl who say dragon ball is gay and would never watch the show

    I dont believe that fox always throw us such lies…..THEY ABUSED DRAGONBALL AND THE DRAGONBALL FANS….I prefer to watch the whole anime for 9th time instead of DBE…If they were smart they could make a movie that will be 1st at BOX office but they prefered not to believe in Dragonball…Dragonball is one of the most popular anime Ever..!If the movie didnt had the names of the anime i dont think they could make a budget like this…

    September 14th, 2009 at 14:40 | #33

    ……It doesn’t matter about the budget if the huge changes the director made were still in effect….as a matter of fact….its the people who worked on the movie…….should of let the actual CREATOR be apart of it instead of trying to wing it………FOX sucks BIG TIME for this one!

  34. gram18
    September 14th, 2009 at 22:40 | #34

    X-Men and Spiderman, among many others were a lot more different to their source material but are celebrated by their respective fanbase as gr8 movies. They had a bigger budget, it does make a world of difference in an action movie. What do you think these movies would have been with 80 min. duration and far worst effects *hint: DBZ’s budget*?

    If Akira could have been part of the movie’s development, that would have been great, but it wouldn’t change the fact that without the budget, the movie would still disappoint.

  35. September 15th, 2009 at 04:39 | #35

    @gram18
    you have to account that people seen DBZ over here in the states way before DB and now Anime isnt as big as it was about 6 years ago if DBE was mage back then it would make at least double digits over here but it didnt.Over here Spiderman and other superheroes are more well known

  36. gram18
    September 15th, 2009 at 08:22 | #36

    That maybe true, but many dead comics like fantastic 4 and the Hulk did quite well.
    Spiderman did amazingly well all around the world, despite being americanized to an annoying degree, even in countries where he is not popular at all. Hancock did amazingly well and he didn’t even have a fan base prior to the movie’s release. But, these movies had high production values, solid financial backing and a marketing machine that worked.

  37. Zgirl
    September 15th, 2009 at 12:38 | #37

    @gram18 Yea but again, Fantastic 4 and the Hulk are American comics, aand for some reason those are treated with more respect. Even the Avatar series was American, and its movie looks half decent! So it kiinda makes you wonder about how open studios are to outside ideas.

    @t-moore Um I thought it was interesting. lol The only reason I’m more curious than pissed is because I’ve enjoyed the Pirates series. They were done in an “epic-fiction” kind of way, sooo marvel being in the hands of Disney may not be as horrible as it sounds….but then again it could be a disaster :P . I thought they only bought it to have some attractions at the park? Are they actually doing future marvel movies?

  38. September 15th, 2009 at 14:37 | #38

    @gram18
    Were not in the golden era of anime now we were back then when everyone watch anime now over here anyway what i mean is they should have done it then when anime in general was popular not just DB.Im sure DBE would make more then than now when the DB franchise was at it’s peak of popularity by 2002-2003 (when toonami was good the good ol days lol)now not a lot of people watch that much anime i have freinds that do but still back then when people usually dont watch anime everyone knew what DBZ is (not DB but you get me) I mean stations were tring to put DB on TV b4 DBZ came in but didnt last that long is was on UPN (now My 50 channel) but it was gone and wasn’t popular thats until DBZ came out and then people who didn’t know about DB want to see it. kinda a shame I like DBZ more BUT DB was good too

  39. September 15th, 2009 at 14:40 | #39

    September 15th, 2009 at 21:24 | #40

    @Zgirl and t-moore

    I totally get what you are saying and you are of course right. American Studios are not as open to foreign franchises as they are to their own. 2002/2003 was definitely a lost opportunity to market live anime movies.

    But still, if the production values were higher for DBE, not only it would have made money, it wcould have brought the whole anime genre back to fashion. 10 years ago nobody would invest in a fantasy movie, and very few would invest in a comic book adaptation.There’s always a movie or two which are so well produced, that they bring a whole genre in fashion (same with video-games).

    DBE, if done right, was the perfect candidate to achieve such a thing. See, even people who are not really into anime, like myself, we all recognize DBZ and it’s the first thing that pops in our head when we hear the term ‘anime’. Also, though anime is not in fashion, fantasy is, and DB is first and foremost fantasy.

  41. September 16th, 2009 at 13:50 | #41

    @gram18
    yeah true too bad that the kind of fantasy people want to see is twilight and the vampire diaries which a coworker told me its just like twilight lol.And now the only reason they are turning to anime live action movies are for 2 reasons one they really want to put their own 2 cent on the anime or something or they ran out of ideas.More likely they ran out of ideas.As for Akira the reason the 1st time i heard of a DB movie i cringed at the idea because i thought that it would be just like the show (and it would look so retarded) but i grown to like DBE and enjoy it cause its different and i reminded me of the show granted it could have been better but im not gonna dwell on it.DBZ got me into anime but i dont want Akira to have a big role on the making of the movie cause again i dont want it like the anime cause walking dinosaurs and animal ruling cities would just look like garfield lol.But I agree he should do something he created it i just dont want him to direct like some other DB fans saying i dont want to see the magic begins again (only asw about 1 minute and it was the worst minute of my life and i want it back lmao)

  42. September 16th, 2009 at 16:14 | #42

    asw=saw

  43. Zgirl
    September 16th, 2009 at 17:24 | #43

    @gram18 Yea I’d have to agree with your idea there. The fact that DB/Z is not popular anymore shouldn’t make a difference, because it still has a huge fan-base from anime and non-anime lovers alike. And had they put more money into it, the success would’ve been massive. And like you said, the DBZ story is an excellent candidate for an epic-fantasy movie.

    @t-moore Yea I agree with the whole Akira being out of the movie thing. If you’re gonna make a DB/Z movie, you want to see something different, but with the DB/Z things. What’s so interesting about watching a story I already know front and back?

  44. September 23rd, 2009 at 21:00 | #44

    Fox didn’t really care if DBE tanked, this is just pure greed hoping they would come out on top and they did. Let’s hope someone else does right to the franchise, but I wouldn’t hold my breath anytime soon. :( this blows

  46. September 24th, 2009 at 14:30 | #46

    @Zgirl
    well whacha gonna do lol.I didnt think it would happen, but to me it was amazing that DBE didnt look retarded as i thought before when I put DB and live action movie in the same sentence lol (like the magic begins)the types of movies i can see in live action are movies like Avatar the last airbender,Cowboy Bebop for sure,and maybe a Gundam Movie (a BIG maybe) hell even a Halo movie,DB would be the last thing i think of when putting DB and live action movie together.Bebop if you senn the show is PERFECT for a movie,The Last Airbender is more down to earth and has its share of drama epic fighting and twists and great plot.Gundam has always have more of a story and great action (but how would they pull off the human inside giant robots thing like the show idk) and if you played Halo i dont need to say anything (i like halo not a HUGE fan but its a great game) it would be great to make that movie and i heard that speilberg is trying to do it (dont know if hes directing or producing).When you hear DB you dont think one could see a live action movie DBE reminded me of the show when i watched it (i knew i would like it but i was a bit suprised that it wasn’t at all retarded looking at i originally thought)I was satisfied with it but thats me.

    i believe dat if they made the movie pg-13 with more action and even BETTER matial arts scenes dats not over-exaggerated but made to look intense, with language, humor or sum kinda innuendo like around teenage level, a better musical score to make the tone, mood, and feeling of the entire movie feel comfortable to keep u tuned in to watch even MORE of it, it wouldve made it more enjoyable and ppl wanna see it more. also if they let yamcha fight at least ONE time and show off his amazing wolf fang fist, added krillin into the movie as in krillin being of VERY useful help, showed piccolo actually doing sum destruction to strike fear into ppl’s eyes like he did in the anime, made the final fight sequence more dramatic and violent: this wouldve made this movie better also. and the goku flying with the kamehameha wave…it WAS in the anime and manga but he used it to make him fly UP to piccolo and bust RIGHT thru his chest not fly with the move blowing his face and body man dat looked awkward. they had him do the move twice : 1st time in their 1st fight and second time to do the dragon fist or is it the oozaru fist. and oozaru couldve been bigger.other than dat if james wong did more research he COULDVE made it ok but he prolly STILL couldnt have made it enjoyable. they shoulda at LEAST had them fight like how they did in james wong’s movie dat we know called The One. dat made me thik they would actually fight like this in the movie but hey he didnt know, he SHOULDA known, and for DAT mistake he fucked up the movie. and btw by watching it more and seeing it as not db, dbz, or dbgt but as something new. i kinda enjoy a lil more but STILL pissed at the same time. so if u cant go to sleep and WANNA go to sleep then id sugest u watch this cuz ur gonna get bored and sleep thru it lol

  49. September 25th, 2009 at 20:15 | #49

    @Zgirl I couldnt see it at first cause of cats and dogs running cities and dinosaurs in the same place humans.I know its an anime and it usually dont have to make sense but all that in live action would look stupid.Have you heard or seen the magic begins? (a DB movie made in china in the 80s)
